Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALVATORE SAN'riNo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to jacks, and has for one of its objects the provision of a simple and efiicient jack capable of easy and quick operation.
A further object is the provision of a simple and eliicient jack operating step by step in which the steps may be of varied lengths. Y
A still further object is the provision of a simple and eflicient jack in which the jack may be operated step by step in both directions, and in which the jack may be easily and quickly put in condition for quick returning.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device shown in Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken on lines 3-3 and 44, respectively, of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the lower portion of my improvement; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are details showing various positions of different parts.
In the drawings Ihave indicated a base member 10 with a bar 11 extending upwardly therefrom. The bar 11 is preferably rectangular in cross-section, as indicated in Fig. 4, and secured to the base 10 by a pin 12. The base 10 is also provided with an opening 13, see Fig. 5, by means of which the bar 11 may be inserted horizontally into the base and held by the same pin 12 in such position. The base 10 is provided with a cross-shaped, in cross-section, opening 14 in which the bar 11 is disposed. The arrangement issuch that the bar may be turned 90 degrees when so desired.
On the bar 11 I provide an upper member 15 and a lower member 16 each having an opening therethrough corresponding to the cross-section of the bar 11. At one side of the bar 11 on the member 15 is a jaw 17 by means of which the device engages the Specification of Letters Patent.

object to be raised. Pivoted to the part 1 7, as at 18, is a lever 19. The lever 19. is preferably angular, as indicated in Fig. 1,. so that a part near the pivotal point 18 is substantially vertical, while the main part of the lever is horizontal. The purpose of this will be mentioned hereinafter. Pivoted to the lever 19 as at 20 is a link 21. The link 21 is pivoted at its lower end to the member 16 as at 16, see particularly Fig. 5. The pivotal connections of the link 21 are indicated as being such connections as are easily cast in making the parts, but it will be apparent that these pivotal connections may be made in any desirable manner.
The member 16 is provided with an opening 22 in which is a hardened jaw member 23. The latter has teeth 24 for engaging an adjacent edge of the bar 11. The jaw 23 may be formed in any desirable shape, but the shape shown is an eflicient and simple one, both to make and operate. The member 16 is provided with an arm 25 which extends upthrough a slot 26 into an opening 27 in the member 15. The link 21 is provided with an arm 28 and a compression spring 29 engaging the arm 28 and a web 30 in the member 16. The arrangement is such that the compression spring exerts an upward pressure on the member 16 about the pivot 16, thereby pressing the teeth 24 against the bar 11.
In the upper member 15 is mounted a jaw holder 31 in which is mounted a jaw 32 similar to the jaw 23. The'jaw holder has an inclined surface engaging a corresponding portion 33 in the member 15. A compression spring 34 presses upwardly on the jaw holder 31 and tends to press the teeth 24 of the jaw 32 against the bar 11.
Since the part of the lever 19 between pivotal points 18 and 20 is very nearly in great leverage will be exerted between members 15 and 16 upon operation of the lever 19. The springs 29 and 34 automatically press thejaws 23 and 32 against the bar 11. Therefore, upon pressing the lever 19 downwardly the jaw 23 will be held against thebar 11, thereby raising the member 15 upwardly, the spring 34 keeping the jaw 32 in close engagement with the bar 11, so that as soon as the. pressure is relieved from the lever 19, the jaw 32 will set on the bar 11 by force exerted bythe article lifted. Upon. raising'lever 19', memindicated in Fig. 1.
her 16 will be raised by means of link 21 and the upward pulling of link 21 on member 16 tends to rock the latter against spring 29, thereby freeing the points of jaw 23 from the bar and causing member 16 to slide up the bar. As soon as downward pressure is again placed on lever 19, jaw 23 will set on bar 11 and again raise member 15, as before described.
To enable the device to lower a weight by steps, means are provided for automatically releasing jaws 23 and 32. This is accomplished by a shaft 35 journaled in member 15 with cams 36 and 37 on said shaft. The cam 37 is adapted to engage the arm 25 when the shaft 35 is rocked to bring cam 37 in the path of arm 25 to free jaw 23, see particularly Fig. 6.
The jaw holder 31 is provided with an arm 38 which is adapted to be engaged by cam 36 when shaft 35 is properly rocked to disengage jaw 32 from the bar 11, see particularly Fig. 7. The shaft 35 may be moved manually by a hand lever 39, and automatically by means of arms 40 and 41 attached to an extended end of shaft 35. Each of arms 40 and 41 are substantially triangular in cross-section, and shaped substantially as A pin 42 is mounted in lever 19 and a spring 43 presses against the end of pin 42, holding the latter in position to engage arms 40 and 41 upon rocking of lever 19. Should the arms 40 and, 41 be in the position indicated in F' 1, the spring 43 will permit the pin 42 to ride up the incline surface of arm 41 and drop in against cam surface 44 of the arm 41. Then upon downward movement of the lever 19, the pin 42 will pull arm 41 downwardly, thereby rocking the cam 36 into the path of arm 38 and move the jaw 32 away from bar 11. Upward movement of the lever 19 will then bring the pin 42 against cam surface 45 of arm 40 and move cam 37 into the path of arm 25 to free jaw 23 from bar 11. The arms 40 and 4-1 and pin 42 are only used for lowering a weight and are renderedinoperative by moving spring 43 and pin 42 by thumb lever 46 to press the cam part 47 thereof under the spring 43, as indicated in Fig. 3, to withdraw pin 42 from the paths of arms 40 and 41. The member 4647 may be mounted in any desirable manner, but I have indicated lugs 48 to hold it in position.
When it is desired to return the members 15 and 16 to the base member 10 quickly, the hand lever 39 is moved to its position indicated in Fig. 7 to withdraw jaw 32 from bar 11, then upon upwardly moving the lever 19 high enough, the top edge of member 16 will engage a projection 15 on member 15 and rock the member 16 to free the jaw 23 from bar 11. Members 15 and 16 together with the parts attached thereto, will then fall by gravity onto base 10. This may be accomplished whether or not there is a load on the jack. It will thus be seen that a load may be lifted step by step, or lowered step by step, or that the members 15 and 16 and the parts attached thereto may be returned quickly to base 10.
The upper end of bar 11 is provided with a head'49 which has a jaw 50 adapted to cooperate with the jaw part 17 to provide a vise of the device. When used as a vise, the bar 11 is preferably disposed in the opening 13 in base 10.
I claim 1. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to the upper nember and a link connecting said lever with the lower member; a jaw in the lower member; an arm on the lower member; a jaw movably mounted in the upper member; an arm connected with the last-mentioned jaw; and cams operatively associated with said lever for engaging said arms for disengaging the jaws from said bar.
2. A jack comprising a bar; upperand lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever and link connecting the members together; a jaw in the lower member; a spring tending to hold said jaw against the bar; an arm on the lower member; and a cam mounted in the upper member for engaging said arm and adapted to rock the lower member on its connection with said link upon relative movements of the members.
3. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever and link connecting the members together; a jaw in the lower member; a spring tending to hold said jaw against the bar; an arm on the lower member; a shaft journaled in the upper member; a jaw holder mounted in the upper member; an arm on said jaw member; cams on the shaft adapted to engage said arms; and means associated with the lever for moving the cams into and out of engagement with the arms.
4. A jack comprising a bar; upperand lower members slidably mounted. on the bar; a lever and link connecting the mem bers; a jaw in the lower member; a jaw holder movably mounted in the upper. member; arms on the lower member holder; a shaft journaled in the upper member; arms on the shaft; and means on the lever adapted to move the arms on said shaft for moving the cams into the paths of the arms on the lower member and jaw holder.
5. A jack comprising a bar; a member slidably mounted 011 the bar; a lever pivoted to the member and adapted to raise the latter on said bar; a wedge-shaped jaw holder mounted in the member; a'jaw .in
the jaw holder; a spring pressing against and the j aw the jaw holder and tending to hold the jaw against the bar; a cam adapted to engage the jaw holder and hold the jaw away from said bar; and means operatively associated with the lever for moving the cam out of engagement with the jaw holder.
6. A jack comprising a bar; two members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one of the members and operatively connected with the other of said members;
a cam mounted in one of the members; an arm on the other member adapted to engage said cam for rocking the last-mentioned member on the bar and an operative connec tion between the lever and cam for operating the latter.
7. A jack comprising a bar; two members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one of the members and operatively connectecl with the other of said members; a cam mounted in one of the members; an arm on the other member adapted to engage said cam for rocking the last-mentioned member on the bar; a spring-pressed member on the lever; and a connection between the spring-pressed member and cam for operating the latter.
8. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one of the members and operatively connected with the other of said members; a jaw in each of said members; a jaw holder in the'upper member providing a mounting for the aw in such member; a spring pressing the jaw holder and tending to hold the aw in such holder against the bar; a spring pressing against the lower member adapted to .press the jaw in such member against the bar, an arm on the lower member extending into the upper member; and a cam mounted in the upper member in the path of said arm.
9. A jack comprising a bar; two members slidable on the bar; a lever and a link connecting said members together; jaws in said members engaging said bar; an arm on one of said members; and means mounted in the other member operable by said arm for moving the jaws, one at a time, away from the bar.
10. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one member; a link pivoted to the lever and other member; a jaw in the lower member; a spring pressing against the lower member and tending to hold the jaw in the latter against said bar; a spring-pressed jaw holder in the upper member; a jaw in the jaw holder; an arm on the lower member; and means adapted to engage the jaw holder and arm for moving the jaws away from the bar; said means being operatively associated with the lever.
11. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one of the members; a link connecting the other member with said lever; a shaft journaled in one member; an arm on the other member; a cam in the shaft adapted to engage the arm; an operative connection between the lever and shaft; and means for rendering said connection inoperative.
12. A jack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one of said members; a link connecting the other member with said lever; a shaft in the upper member; cams in the shaft; a jaw holder in the upper member having a portion adapted to engage a cam in said shaft; an arm in the lower member adapted to engage a cam in said shaft; and an operative connection between the lever and said shaft.
13. A ack comprising a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one member; a link connecting the other member with said lever; a shaft journaled in said upper slidable member; an arm on the lower slidable member; a cam on said shaft adapted to engage said arm; an arm fixed. on said shaft; and a pin slidably mounted in said lever and adapted to engage said arm for oscillating said shaft.
14. A jack (:omprising'a bar; upper and lower members slidably mounted on the bar; a lever pivoted to one member; a link connecting the other member with said lever; a shaft journaled in said upper slidable member; an arm on the lower slidable member; a cam on said shaft adapted to engage said arm; an arm fixed on said shaft; a pin slidably mounted on said lever and adapted to engage said arm for oscillating said shaft; and a cam on said lever engaging said pin and adapted'to move the latter out of the path of'the arm of said shaft.
