To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK M. TI-LITE and HENRY E. RIEGER, citizens of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Covering Submerged Piles with Concrete, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an apparatus to be used for molding a layer of concrete around piles which are driven and partially submerged and the primary object of our invention is improvements over our patent for an apparatus for covering submerged piles with concrete dated October, 241, 1916, Patent Number 1,202,184, and'the objects of our improvements are, first, to provide an apparatus of this class which eliminates the necessity for a trap at the bottom; second, to provide an apparatus of this class which is simple to construct and operate; third, to provide an apparatus of this class which is more efficient, and-fourth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is,
more readily and easily removed after the concrete has been allowed to set sufficiently.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a driven pile and showing encircling the same the layer of concrete and showing a fragmentary portion of our apparatus positioned thereon, Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of several fragmentary portions of the forms at the lower end and showing the means for joining the separate form'members together, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the key for conneotiing the different form members together; Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the molded concrete base members which supports the cement at the bottom; Fig. 5 is a side elevational view thereof and Fig. 6'is a plan view of two of these cement base members with a packing on the top for making a tight joint for preventing the cement from running out at the bottom.

The concrete base members 1, mold members 2, mold members 3, releasing rods 1,
key members 5, vertical gaskets 6, horizontal gaskets 7 levers 8, cables 9, cables 10 and packing 11 constitute the principal parts of our apparatus.
The base members 1 are preferably concrete members molded in a mold in semiannular form and they are provided with a plurality of eye members 1 introduced into the concrete while it is in the mold and soft and mounted over this base formed by the two base members 1 is the packing 11 and it is held in position by means of the wire 1 inserted through the eye members-1 shown in Fig. 6 and the ends of the wire are twisted together also furnishing a means of connecting the two base members toholes 2 on one side of said mold members and on the opposite mold members they are provided with U- shaped lugs 2 which are adapted to fit in said oblong holes and extend through the same and between the angle bar and the extended portion of said.
lug is mounted one of the key members 5 in each of said U shaped lugs. Mounted between the angle bars 2 on .the separate halves are vertical gaskets 6 which provide a water tight fit between said angle bars. Secured near the lower side of said mold members 2 are U shaped lugs 2 which are provided with holes in their extended members adapted for' the lovers 8 to revolve therein and mounted between these lug members 2 is an eye lug 2 through which the cable 9 passes and to said cable 9 is connected the cable 9; said cable 9 connects with the outwardly extending arms 8" of the levers 8 so that when the cable 9 is drawn through the lug 2 the levers 8 are revolved in the lugs 2 and the members 8 driven pile. The concrete, we have marked A,-and the piles 13 to facilitate the illustration. The form members 3 which comprise the remaining form members are constructed the same as the members 2 except that on the lower edge there is mounted an angle bar as well as on the top and side edges and the joints between the members 2 and 3 are formed with the holes 3 and U shaped lugs 2; and one of the keys 5 driven therein, there being a gasket 7 between the two horizontal angle bars and the lugs 2 and central lug 2 are not thereon.
In order to remove the keys 0 along the vertical angle bars there is provided rods a which extend through the links connected to said keys and the lower ends of said rods 4 are provided with bends l therein so that the said keys may be removed by raising said rods 4 the upper ends of which extend above the top of the water.
Though we have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of partswe do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and'arrangement but desire to include in the purview of our invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
The base members 1 are molded preferably of concrete in suitable molds for that purposeand provided with the eye members therein. They areplaced one on each side of the pile and a packing member consisting of burlap, old belting or the like'with holes cut therethrough to conform with the eye a member is placed over said members and a wire passed through. said eye members over said: packing for securing the packing to said molded members the ends of said packing overlapping. The two members 2 are then placed around the pile and secured together at their edges by the keys 5 and the levers 8' are turned in the position shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings supporting themembers 1 in position against the bottom of'the base-members 2 with the packing up. The form is supported by means of the cables 10 one on each side in the lugs 2 and the space between the pile and forms is the top of the of the water.
filled with concrete, the lower edge supported on the base members 1. \Vhen the forms 2 are nearly full the forms 3 are secured to the top edge thereof'by means of the keys and lugs through the angle bars and the two members aresecured together by means of the keys in the lugs along the horizontal angle bars then the lower members are lowered into the water and the sections 3 filled and so on until themolded concrete members 1 reach the ground, and are allowed to sink into the ground around said pile, the weight of the layer of concrete and the forms forcing the same into the ground some distance.
After the concrete has set sufliciently the cable 9 is drawn and the members 8 of the levers S are moved outwardly from under the concrete mold members 1 and the keys along the vertical angle bars are removed by means of the rods 4% and the lower members 2 and 3 are then raised to the surface of the water by means of the cables 10, the base members 1 and packing 11 being left in position in the ground and the members 3 7 being removed by removing the keys after the oints are raised toabove the surface of the water thus leaving a layer of concrete around the pile from some distance below ground to above the surface It is obvious that with the above appa ratus there is provided a means whereby a 'layer of concrete may be lowered around wooden or other piles driven into the ground and in several feet of water, that the molds and joints are so constructed that the water from the outside cannot get through to the concrete. in sulficient quantities to injure it until it has set; that different mold sections are readily assembled and may bereadily disassembled although submerged, that the apparatus as a whole is simple and economical of construction, durable" easy to operate, and will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to-secure' by Let-- ters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of semi-circular concrete members, a packing member secured on the upper surface thereof and extending inwardly adapted to press tightly against the pile, a pair of semi-circular form members provided with levers pivotally mounted thereon for securing said concrete members to said form members and means for securing said semi-circular form member together.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination of a pair of concrete members adapted to fit around a pile; a packing member secured on the upper surface thereof adapted to press-tightly against the pile,
a pair of semi-circular form members provided with levers pivotally mounted on said form members and adapted to engage and disengage saidconcrete members for readily connecting and disconnecting said concrete members with said form members and means for securing said form members together.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of base members adapted to lit around a pile, a pair oi semicircular form members mounted thereon, levers pivotally mounted on said form members and adapted to engage and disengage said base members for connecting and disconnecting said form members with said base members and means for securing said form members together forming a tight joint between the same.
4L. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of base members adapted to fit around a pile, a pair of semicircular form members mounted thereon, levers pivotally mounted on said form members and adapted to engage and disengage said base members for connecting and disconnecting said form members with said base members, means for securing said form members together forming a tight joint between the same, other semi-circular form members secured to the top ends of said first mentioned form members and similar means for securing said last mentioned form members together.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of base members adapted to fit around a pile, a pair of semi circular form members mounted thereon, levers pivotally mounted on said form members and adapted to engage and disengage said base members for connecting and dis connecting said form members with said base members, means for securing said form members together forming a tight joint between the same, other semicircular form members secured. to the top ends of said first mentioned form members, similar means for securing said last mentioned form members together, and means for readily releasing said securing means so that said form members may be readily separated from each other.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of base members adapted to fit around a pile, a pair of semicircular form members mounted thereon, levers pivotally mounted on said form members and adapted to engage and disengage said base members for connecting and disconnecting said form members with said base members, means for securing said form members together forming a tight joint between the same, other semi-circular form members secured to the top ends of said first mentioned form members, similar means for securing said last mentioned form members together, means for readily releasing said securing means so that said form members may be readily separated from each other, and a cable secured to each of said sections for raising the same to above the surface of the water.
