SUPPORTING CONNECTION FOR VEHICLE-BODIES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Gr. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supporting Connections for Vehicle-Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description thereof.
My invention relates to vehicles, and has special reference to the body of such vehicles, this application being a division of application filed by me on November 2, 1918, Serial No. 260,869.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient device for con necting the sides of the body and under frame of the body together, as well as such a device which will be strong and durable and will not be liable to become broken or separated when in use.
To these ends, my invention consists, gen erally stated, in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved device, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a cross-section of an ordinary vehicle body and under'frame;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Figs'3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are detail views of the connection employed between the body and under frame, with Fig. 5 being taken on the line 5-5 Fig. 4 looking in the direction of the arrows; and

Divided and this application filed April tion 4 and side portions or sills 5, with such sills having an inner flange portion 6 for forming a ledge on which such central portion rests, and between the bottom 3 andunder frame 2 are the cross bars 7. In order to connect the sides 1 ofthe body A with the bottom 8 of such body, the bracket supports 8 are employed, such supports being positioned adjacent to such bars 7, and with a number of the same extending along such sides and between such bottom and the under frame 2. As shown in Figs. 1. to 7 inelusive, these supports 8 consist of anupright flange or angle member 9 extending vertically along the sides 1 and the horizontal lug member 10 extending under the sill portion 5 of the bottom 3, and such members are preferably formed of malleable iron castings or pressed metal, such as steel. These angle members 9 are outwardly flared at their top portions 11 in order to conform to the outwardly flared portions 12 on the sides 1 and such members are secured to such flared portions 12 and said sides by means of bolts 13 passing through side flanges 9 in said members and said sides. The horizontal members 10 project slightly beyond the sides 1 of the body A at their outer ends 10 and have at such ends an angular slot 14 extending vertically through the same for the reception of the lower ends of the upright members 9. A bolt 15 passes through apertures 15' in the center flange 9 on the upright members 9 and through the slot 14 and like apertures in the outer end 10 of the horizontal members 10 to hold the parts in place, and bolts 16 also pass through the inner portions of the members 10 and through the sill portions 5 on the bottom 3 to connect the said members to said bottom.
As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the angular member 9 is shown for use without connection with or use of the open express body A therewith but can be used with what is known as a stake body, in which case, such member is formed straight instead of flared at its upper end, and is adapted to be removably connected with the member 10 through its lower end fitting within the slot 14 in such member 10. In order to hold the member 9 in the member 10 a clamp 17 is bolted to and around the central flange 9' on the upright member 9 in order to engage with the upper face of such member 10.
In Fig. 10, the horizontal lug member 10 is shown as being formed as'part of or integral with the member 9, and in Figs. 11 and 12, such members are shown with the member 9 formed of channel shape for fitting within a like shaped slot in the member 10. I n
It will thus be seen that in the use of in improved bracket supporting construction between the side panels of a vehicle body, the usual formation of these parts from .vrought metaland wood will be dispensed with, and the liability of the breaking off of the end of the usual wooden portion which ordinarily i project's horizontally from the sides of the'body is overcome, while such metal and wooden parts areexpensive and diflicult to form to shape and size, so that such parts are eliminated by the connection described herein. The use of the bracket connection on the outside of the body will also eliminate the use of plates and draw bolts commonly used onthe in side of the body in the ordinary connections, and as shown and described such connections are preferably placed adjacent the cross bars on the under frame in order to strengthen the side of the body at such point. 3. A vehicle body; having a bottom and sides, a vertical member secured to said sides and having a flange, a horizontal socket member secured under said bottom, said socket member having a portion projecting beyond said bottom, and means for securing said flange portion to said projecting portion.

A vehicle body having a bottom and sides, a'vertical member secured to said sides and having a flange, a horizontal socket member secured under said bottom, said socket member having a portion projecting beyond said bottom and provided with a slot within the same of the same shape as said flange portion for the reception of said flange portion, and means for securing said flange portion in said slot.
