. 'B-LDOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 19230.
Application filed February L51, 1919. Serial No. 278,5 li.
which the following" is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to spark plugs for internal combustion engines, and the primary object of the invention is to produce a spark plug of the ump-spark type embodying greater area o't firing suritace between the electrodes than is common in a other spark plugs of this kind.
Another object is to produce such plug in a simple, practical and economical form.
\Vith these objects in View, called to the accompanying wherein v Figure 1 is'a sectional side elevation; of this improved plug;
,Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View, showing the relatiie position of the electrodes;
Fig. 3 is a bOttOIllPlillfl View of a modified form of the. invention and Fig. eta ertical transverse fragmentary sectional "View thereof.
Referring more particularly to th'edrawings, our invention embodies the ordinary type of jinnp-spark plug 1 with its central Wire :2, said central wire being surrounded by an insulation 3.' The upper end of the central wire 2 is threadcdin the usual form with the threads hand a cap washer 5 is drawings,
rigidly mounted over the top of the insula tion 3. The usual cap nuts 6 and 7 are nounted upon the threaded end of the central wire 2, adapted to engage and hold. the end of the electrical conductor8..- The usual threaded bushing 9 is mounted at the lower end of the insulation 3, and thusadapted to attention is vary from the same in minor details, not
be set into the elwine cylinder .10 in the usual form.
The essential feature of our invention' consists of a loop ll extended from the outer grounded electrode 12 to, and entirel'v around the central projects through said loop 11. and extends below the same as shown, so that the requisite space 14; intervenes between the central electrode 13 and the loop ll of: the outer electrode 12.
Thus a greater area of firing surface is extended between the two electrodes, thereby facilitating the passage of the spark between the electrodes.
Of course, the loop ll maybe extended from the central electrode 18 out to and around the outerelectrode 12, which would "be a modification producing the same result.
ll' hile we have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing our said invention, it understood We may departing "from the spirit of the invention, as
' laid down in the appended clai1n..
\Vhat We claim to be new'and patentable isz In a jump-spark plug for internal combustion engines, a central insulated electrode formed at its inner end with a parallel oil'- set portion terminating in a rightmngularly disposed loop and an outer grounded elec trode extending beyond the loop of the inelectrode .13, and spaced thcrcironi in such manner that the lattersulated electrode and formed with a spaced terminal extending outwardly through and beyond the center of said loop, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
