TIME-CONTROLLED LIGHT.
Application filed December 8, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. TERZIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sutter Creek, in the county of Amador and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Time-Controlled Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in time controlled switches and aims to provide means whereby the alarm mechanism of a clock is utilized to operate the switch and close the circuit in which is included an electric lamp. 7
The invention also aims to provide a novel form of switch arm which is normally vertically disposed and in contacting engagement with the winding key of the alarm mechanism, so that the operation of this key will cause the arm to fall by gravity into engagement' with the spring contacts and close an electric circuit.
The invention further aims to provide novel means for holding the switch arm in its normal position, which consists of a pivoted gravity lever engageable over the switch arm in a manner to permit the latter to fall when moved off center by the alarm mechanism, the construction of the gravity lever being such as to automatically adjust itself to retain the switch arm in position.
The invention also provides means pivotally connected to the switch arm for breaking the circuit and resetting the mechanism, means independent of the resetting means being provided for breaking the circuit, so that the light may be extinguished without bringing the switch arm into contact with the alarm mechanism.
The invention further includes the following novel combinations and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a switch mechanism embodying the present invention, the clock used in connection therewith being shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, the clock being shown in full lines.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates a bracket or support, which includes a base 11, and a back 12.
Secured to the back or" the bracket through the medium of ears 13 is a switch base 14, the said basebeing spaced from the base 11 in order to properly position the parts with respect to the alarm mechanism oi the clock 15, the latter resting upon the base 11.
The switch mechanism which is mounted upon the base 142 includes a switch arm 16, which is formed with a horizontally disposed cylindrical member 17, which is mounted in bearings 18 secured to the base 14:. The switch arm 16 is also provided with a cylindrical arm 19, which carries at one end a contact point 20, the latter being adapted to engage spring contacts 21 and 22, secured to the base lei and suitably spaced apart, their position being such that when the arm 16 is in its lowered position the contact point will engage between the spring contacts 21 and 22. The contacts 21 and 22 are included in an electric circuit 23, in which is also included a spotlight or other lamp 2st, a battery or other source of current 25 being provided for operating the light. T he switch arm 16 is also provided with a laterally extending key engaging arm 26, which, when the arm 16 is resting in a vertical position will be brought into contacting engagement with the winding key 27 of the alarm mechanism of the clock 15.
In order to hold the key engaging arm 26 in contacting engagement with the winding key 27, the base 14 has pivoted thereto between ears 28 a gravity lever 29. This lever is curved as shown and is adapted to extend over and into frictional contact with the cylindrical arm 19 of the switch arm 16, the inclined position of the arm 29 acting to yieldingly hold the arm 26 into engagement with the winding key. Secured to the base 14 and in the path of movement oi the arm 29, is a stop 30, the outer end of which is bifurcated or slotted as shown at 31 for the purpose of receiving the beveled end 32 of the arm 29, when the latter is permitted to fall by the movement of the switch arm 16 from beneath the same. This stop 30 retains the arm 29 in position to again engage the switch arm 16 when the latter is raised in resetting the mechanism.
For the purpose of resetting the mechanism the switch arm has secured thereto an arm 33, which has pivotally secured as shown at 34: a resetting rod 35, the latter extending beyond the end of the bracket 10 in a manner to be conveniently grasped for raising the switch arm and resetting the mechanism or bringing the switch arm into contacting engagement with the winding key 27. Slidably mounted upon the base 14L in a manner to permit of its being moved transversely of the space between the spring contacts 21 and 22, is a circuit breaker, consisting of a wedged shape block of insulation 36, which is adapted to be brought beneath the member 19 of the switch arm to raise the contact point 20 from between the spring contacts 21 and 22, so that the circuit may be broken and the light 24k extinguished with the resetting mechanism. This wedged shape block 36 will hold the contact point 20 from engagement with the contacts 21 and 22 which will necessitate of moving the contact arm 16 to its vertical position. Secured to the wedged shape block 36 is a rod 35, which also extends beyond the end of the bracket 10 in position to be conveniently grasped for the purpose of sliding the operating circuit breaker.
In the use of the invention the alarm is set in the usual manner and the clock positioned upon the base 14, the switch arm 16 being raised into contacting engagement with the winding key 27, the said arm be ing held in such engagement by means of the gravity lever 19. lVhen the alarm operates the winding key 27 will rotate to move the switch arm 16 oil center, the said arm falling by gravity and engaging the switch pin 20 between the spring contacts 21 and 22, completing the circuit and lighting the lamp 24. In addition to holding the switch arm 16 in its vertical position, the
gravity lever 29 also insures the falling of the arm 16 after it has been moved off center by the winding key 27, the weight of the gravity arm operating to force the switch lever 16 downward.
Various changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a time controlled alarm mechanism, of a normally vertically disposed pivoted switch arm adapt ed for contacting engagement with the alarm mechanism, a gravity lever adapted to engage said switch arm to hold the latter in normal position and to force the same downward when acted upon by the alarm mechanism, contact points located in the path of the switch arm, a resetting bar pivotally connected to the switch arm for returning the switch arm to normal position and a circuit breaking element independent of the resetting bar.
2. The combination with a time controlled alarm mechanism, of a normally vertically disposed pivoted switch arm adapted for contacting engagement with the alarm mechanism, a gravity lever adapted to engage said switch arm to hold the latter in normal position and to release the same when acted upon by the alarm mechanism, contact points located in the path of the switch arm, a resetting bar pivotally connected to the switch arm for returning the switch arm to normal position and a wedge shaped circuit breaking element independent of said bar and movable across the contact points, whereby the switch may be opened without resetting the mechanism.
