ATTACHMENT r'on SAWS.
Patented May 4, 1920;
Application filed August 2, 1918. Serial No. 247,937.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ADoLrH O. SGHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Saws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved attachmentfor saws, having reference more particularly to saws intended for use in butcher shops and other places where animal carcasses are cutup' and parceled out for public use.
An object of my invention is to provide an attachment which can be. aflixed to the frame carrying the blade of the saw, by means of which the handle may be quickly and conveniently mounted on said frame and firmly secured thereto; and it is furthermore provided not onlythat the handle can be applied to the saw more successfully in the first instance, but it may with equal facility be replaced if broken with the minimum expenditure of time and effort.
In this specification I disclose a preferred form or embodiment'of my invention, but reserve the right to alter the construction which is actually shown and described herein, especially as regards the shape, size and arrangement of parts, to the full extent permitted by the scope and spirit'of my invenin so far as the general meanings of the terms used in the appended claims define the same.
On the drawings,
Figure 1.is a side elevation of the frame and blade of a saw, with an embodiment of my attachment made fast to one end of the same;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1
Fig, 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating also the handle of the saw engaging my attachment and made fast thereto; and
Fig. 1 is a top plan of what appears on Fig. 8;
Fig. 5 is' a detached view of an attachment interposed between the saw blade and the handle.
Having reference to the drawings, I show at 1 the frame of a saw, carrying a'blade 2.
This frame is of the usual shape. with its ends turned downward; and with the blade 2 retained in place by having its extremities secured to the down turned ends of the frame in any suitable manner, at the end to which the handle 10 is to be applied the frame is provided with say, a couple of large openings 3, which give passage to the screws or other rivets 11 by which the frame and the handle are to be held together.
My invention comprises as an essential element the attachment 4, which may be simplytwo pieces of metal or a single piece, having preferably the shape or outline indicated particularly on Figs. 1 and 2, and secured by riveting or otherwise to the end of the frame 1 in which the openings 3 are located, rivets a being shown. Whenapplied to the frame "1, the two side plates constituting this attachment 4: engage the corresponding sides of the frame. 1 The attachment 1' in the form illustrated may be of such shape that it extends the frame rearward at the top; constituting a supporting surface, adjacent the curve of the frame where it extends downward to meet the blade 2. At this upper portion of the attachment 4L is provided registering openings .5 in the two side plates thereof, which are round holes drilled through the said plates in alinement one with the other, and may 7 pass through the frame 2 or not as most convenient, and are adapted to be brought into line with the larger openings 3 in the frame 1. The openings 5 are thus provided for the upper bolt of the handle which is to be made fast to the saw by virtue of this attachment. As will be understood the two side plates of the attachment 4 are of the same shape and occupy coincident positions when the attachment 4 and the frame are riveted to each other.
Below the openings 5 I provide both parts of the attachment 4 with slots 6, so located that they will register with but eX- tend across .the openings 3 in thelframe 1; that is, in each sideplate of the attachment will. be found as many pairs of oppositely disposed slots 6 as there are openings 3; which slots 6 in width correspond to the size of the rivet body 11, but in length equal the diameter of the openings 3, whose diameters shall be of predetermined largeness to accommodate the possible variations in positions of the rivets 17 when two or more are employed, as is almost invariably the practice. These slots 6 will therefore in width correspond to the diameter of the openings 5 above them; and itois thus provided that when the handle is put on, the bolts or other fastening devices which it carries, can be passed through the openings 5, the slots 6 in the attachment and the openings 3 in the frame 2 without difliculty.
When the handle 10 is aflixed to the saw as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the rear end of the frame 1 carrying the attachment 1 is simply thrust into the slot 12 of the handle and the uppermost bolt or screw 11 is passed through the openings 5 and made fast. The
remaining bolts of the handle can then easily be passed through the wider openings and the slots 6; and when all the bolts are tightened, the handle and the frame will be made rigid with each other. The bolts 11 may have heads at one end andthreads at the other to receive any suitable kind of nut v to enable them to serve their intended purpose.
The bolt in the handle which passes through the openings 5 engages these openings snugly and fills the same entirely. Hence, any tendency of the handle 10 to move vertically upon the frame 1 is entirely provided against; while other bolts 11 similarly carried by the handle passing through the, slots 6 and openings 3 prevent the handle from turning about the upper bolt allow the bolts. of the handle relating thereto to penetrate them after the attach- 'ment has been riveted to the frame and the handle is ready to be put on. Of course the slots 6 in the attachment must be located so as to register with the openings 3 and be far enough from the rear edge of the attachment to allow the bolts of the handle to engage them properly and hold the handle securely and properly in place in contact with the rear edge of the attachment. By this method, when the holes 3 are formed their location can be picked more or less by the eye of the operator; and in making the attachment 4-, one is only required to get the holes 5 and the-slots 6 at the proper distance from the edge of the attachment 4 and have them of sufficient widthwith respect to the diameter ,p of the screws 8. The slots 6 may be of greater or less length, but they need not register exactly with the openings 3; for so long as these slots and the openings 3 permit the bolts of the handle to'go through from one side to the other after the properbolt of the handle passes through the openings 5 the desired end is obtained. r
The attachment 4: forms in effectavery cheap mounting device that enables the saw and the handle to be easily and readily assembled. It should be applied to the frame before the handle 10 is fitted on it; and then in case it becomes desirable to replace the handle, a new one can be affixed to the frame as quickly and effectively 1 as the original handle was mounted thereon.
If desired it is obviously practicable to make the attachment 4- in two separate pieces, but, as a matter of manufacture, it is preferable to form this part by bending so as to fit over the frame 1 and engage both sides thereof in the general manner illus trated. When the attachment is thus formed out ofone piece of metal looped at the top as shown in the drawings, the openings 5 will be inserted through the attachment as described, either through theframe of the saw or only through the'two s ide walls of the attachment, as shown in Figs.
1 and 2.. Butif the side plates of theattachment are made in two separate plates,
they would not in that case need to extend over the saw frame top or even up to the top portion. In either event the hole 5 would not pass'through the attachment at all, but through the frame of the saw alone.
ments of my invention in the same manner as if the hole were located in the attachment, for the reason that the latter is rigidly fixed tothe sawframe.
My improvement is illustrated in con' nection with the type of saw frame which has the cutting blade attached as a separable member. While-this form is the pre ferred application of my device, it obviously may be afliXed to a single saw blade, such for example as the familiar type used by cabinet makers and joiners. 'Furthermore, it is desired to employ'my improvement with other kinds of cutting tools, in which a handle is attachable to a steel blade. a r 7 Having described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure andprotect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with the frame ofv a saw having a blade aflixed thereto, said frame of hard steel and also having relatively large openings adjacent one end, of
. an attachment for the frame to be afiixed to said end, said attachment of softer'metal having slots to be located adjacent said openings on both sides of the frame,the
attachment being adapted to' permit'a V This would ofcourse fulfil the require 7 handle to be secured to the frame by bolts extending through said slots and said openings.
saw having a blade aflixed thereto, said frame made of hard'steel and having a pair of relatively large openings in one end, an attachment of relatively soft metal to be secured to the frame at said end and pro- 2. The combination with the frame of a" the frame on both blade, being adapted to engage a handle for the saw to be secured in place by fastening devices extending through said blade and said attachment.
' 7 4. The combination With the blade of the saw having relatively large openings in one end, of an attachment for the frame to be affixed to said end, said attachment having slots to vbe'located adjacent said openings on both sides of said blade; the attachment being adapted to secure a handle to said blade by bolts extending through said slots and said openings.
