Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE RowLnY, residing at Spotswood, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have 1nvented new and useful Improvements in Twyers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved twyer for directing an air blast into a furnace, cupola or forge, and relates more particularly to the type of twyer that is provided with a water jacket to prevent the fire heating it to an injurious extent.
The salient features of the invention comprise a twyer consisting of a tapered tube having a surrounding water jacket, the smaller end of the tube being bent or curved to connect with a nozzle formed in the wall of the water jacket: means whereby ashes and other solid matters falling through said nozzle are maintained in such position that they do not obstruct the draft: and means whereby said ashes or like foreign matters may forcibly be ejected by a blast of air when required. There are also provided means whereby the size of nozzle orifice may be adjusted. The nozzle can, therefore, be arranged at the bottom of the hearth of a smiths forge, and the blast directed vertically upward. A hot fire is thereby ob tained, without blowing the fuel off the hearth and without danger of the twyer becoming choked with fuel or ashes.
Reference being had to the accompanying explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of a twyer made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in end'elevation of the twyer shown in Fig. 1.
In these drawings, the letter a designates a tapered tube, the smaller end of which is curved through an approximate right angle thereby forming a smooth bend b. This tube a can be made of wrought metal, but is preferably constructed as an iron or steel casting.
Formed interiorly of said tube a is a longitudinal wall or partition 0 which separates the said tube a along the major portion of its length into two chambers c and 0 The tapered tube a is laid in a mold and a water jacket 61 conforming to the shape of said tube a is cast therearound, thereby forming an annular chamber 6 for circulation of cooling water.
A longitudinally disposed raised portion or boss f is formed along the outside of the jacket d, and in this boss an opening or nozzle 1] is made in alinement with the smaller end of said tube a.
A hole It preferably rectangular in shape is formed, as by coring, in the boss f and this hole hextends into the side of the nozzle 9 and is fitted with a slidable bar 2'. This slidable bar z is rounded at the inner end to fit the circular side of the nozzle g, and said bar 2' can be moved endwise in the hole It so as to close the nozzle 9, when desired.
The outer end of the bar 2' may be bent to form a suitable handle.
Pipes 7c and Z screwed into the larger end of the jacket 03 are provided for the entrance of water to the chamber 6 and the discharge of the water from said chamber, respectively. I
A plug on which is capable of being readily removed in order to clean said chamber c is screwed into the Wall of the water jacket d at a convenient part thereof.
In practice, the twyer made as above described is preferably placed'below a furnace, forge or the like, with the nozzle f directed upwardly therein.
The front or leading end a of the partition 0 is disposed approximately in alinement with or rearwardly of the inside wall 0 of the bent portion of the tube a, thereby insuring that substances dropping from the nozzle 9 will pass said rib c and fall into the compartment 0 At the rear end of the twyer there is provided a screwed plug 79, which blocks the orifice q leading from the compartment 0 There is illustrated by the broken lines 1" an air pipe which projects into the compartment 0 of the tapered tube a.
Air supplied by a bellows, fan or blower passes from the pipe 9" into the tube a and is smoothly directed by the curved portion thereof to the nozzle g from which it issues, passing into the fire.
By means of the slidable bar 2' the orifice of the nozzle 9 can be opened to a greater or less extent to regulate the blast and fire as may be desired.
The nozzle 9 can, moreover, be completely closed by said bar 2', thereby effectively preventing further ingress of fuel and ashes through said nozzle 9 to the tube a, and preventing issuance of the blast of air through said orifice of said nozzle As a result the air blast is directed downwardly and around said partition 0, and on the removal of the screwed plug 9, the ashes, slag or other refuse, which may have accumulated in the compartment 0 are forcibly blown therefrom. A flange 8 is formed integrally with the rear end of the jacket (Z, and this flange s is provided with holes t for bolts or like attachrnent means.
The improved twyer is preferably formed with the tapered cross-section illustrated by the end elevation in Fig. 2, by which construction an economy of metal is effected.
Vhat I do claim is a 7 1. A twyer comprising, a tube, a water jacket formed around said tube, inlet and outlet holes for cooling water in the larger end of said water jacket, a boss on the outside of said jacket, an orifice in said boss, a bend at the forward end of said tube, communicating with said orifice, a bar slidable endwise over said orifice, and a longitudinal dividing partition in said tube, substantially as described.
2. A twyer comprising, a tube, a water jacket formed around said tube, inlet and outlet holes for cooling water in said water jacket, a boss on the outside of said jacket, an orifice in said boss, a vent at the forward end of said tube, communicating with said orifice, a bar slidable endwis'e over said orifice, a longitudinal dividing partition in said tube, forming two compartments therein, a plug detachably fitted at the rear of one of said compartments and an air-pipe orifice in the rear of the other of said compartments, substantially as described.
3. In twyer, a tapered tube, a water jacket, surrounding said tapered tube, a nozzle in the wall of the water jacket, said tapered tube having its smaller end curved and connected with said nozzle, and a longitudinal partition in said tube dividing it into two compartments substantially as described.

In a twyer a tapered tube, a water jacket surrounding said tapered tube, a longitudinally disposed boss on the outside of said water jacket, a nozzle in said boss, a hole in said boss extending into the side of said nozzle, a slidable bar in said hole, and a longitudinal partition in said tapered tube dividing it into two compartments, substantially as described. A twyer comprising, a tapered tube a water jacket conforming to the shape of the tapered tube cast upon and around said tapered tube, inlet and outlet holes for cooling water in the larger end of said water jacket, a longitudinally disposed boss on the outside of the water jacket, a nozzle in said boss, the smaller end of the tapered tube being curved to connect with the nozzle,-'a
side of the nozzle, a bar slidable in said hole, a longitudinal partition in saidtapered tube extending from the rear end to within a short distance from the front inner wall of the curved end of said tube and dividing the latter into two compartments, a plug screwed into the rear end of the lower of said compartments, an air-pipe orifice formed in the rear of the upper compartment, a flange formed on the rear of said water jacket and holes formed in said flange, substantially as described.
6. A twyer comprising, a tapered tube, a water jacket conforming to the shape of the tapered tube cast upon and around said tapered tube, inlet'and outlet holes for cooling water in the larger end of said water jacket, a longitudinally disposed boss on the outside of the water jacket, a nozzle in said boss, the smaller end of the tapered tube being curved to connect with the nozzle, a hole through said boss extending into the side of the nozzle, a bar slidable in said hole and means for attaching said twyer to a furnace or forge substantially as described.
