Description

U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' STEPHEN MAHONEY AND JAMES GELLER, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlTMAN-CONNECTIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,869, dated December 10, 1872.
to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature'of our invention consists in the employment of an adjusting-screw and spiral spring to adjust the key :for tightening the boxes in. a pitman-connection, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a pitman-conneotion with our improvement attached; and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the connection with the parts separated.
A A represent the two boxes, placed one on each side of and surrounding the wrist-pin B. C is the metal band passing around the box A and on the upper and lower side of the box A, the end of the pitman E being secured between the ends of said metal band by means of bolts'a a. D is thekey passing through slots in the band and through a groove in the end of the pitman to tighten the boxes A A. These parts are the same as commonly used for pitmen-connections, and we lay no claim to them by themselves. The inner of the two of which is bent at right angles over the end of the key D, and in said projecting part is formed a female screw or nut, b, through which passes a screw, J. The lower end of this screw forms a rod, 01, of suitable length, around which is placed aspiral spring, c. When the screw is screwed down the end of the rod d projects into a hole made in the end of the key D, and the spring 6 bears against said key and against the shoulder f on the screw. V
It will readily be seen that by the turning of the screw J the tension of the spring 0 is easilyv regulated, and hence the boxes may be made as tight as may be necessary and any wear of the same easily taken up, even when the engine is in motion. By this means we also dispense with the set-screw for holding the key in place.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the arm G with nut b,-
screw J with rod 01 and shoulder f, and the spring c, all constructed as described and arranged with a pitman-connection, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 18th day or November, 1872.

JAMES GELLER.
