Be it known that l, ERNEST W. Ruine wenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State ofl Ohio, have invented new and useful improvements in Submersible Lights for Fishermen, of which the following is a specication.
his invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as illumination and more particularly relates to a submersible light for fishermen.
lt is the principal aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed so that it may be submerged in the water and held in various positions of adjustment beneath the surface o,f the water to act as a means for attracting fish so that they may be readily caught.
lt is an equally important object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character the construction of which is novel in form while the parts are arranged in water-tight relation with respect to each other so that the battery contained within the holder as well as the lamp may be effectively protected even when the lamp is lighted and the device submerged.
More particularly the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein a transparent globe of novel construction is employed and detachably connected to one end of the body of the device for protecting the lamp against the action of the water.
As an additional object the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein bails of novel form are swingingly connected to one end of the holder and arranged so as to be interloclred with each other and thereby -.form a guard for protecting the globe and in addition form a means for receiving an anchoring weight.
. 'it is an additional obj ect of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, 'thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
@ther objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, the combination of elements and the arrangement of parts which will be amplified in the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the device.
Fig. 2 is an elevational detail of the lower end thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional detail.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a cylindrical container or holder 1 formed of suitable metal the upper portion of which is reduced and corrugated or threaded as at 2 leaving a shoulder 3 while the reduced threaded portion is engagedv by the threaded cap 41 to which is connected a loop 5 for receiving the lower end of the suspending cord 6. Disposed within ithe body is a cylindrical lining 7 desirably but not necessarily formed of corrugated cardboard the same acting as an insulator. Also disposed fin the body or container are a pair of batteries 8 which may be of a suitable type and these batteries are in series with each other.
With a view toward providing the improved illulninating means the lower end of the container or holder is reduced and threaded or corrugated as at9 leaving a shoulder 10 while connected to the reduced threaded portion 9 is a threaded sleeve ll which is formed with a flange 19. designed for clamping the annular gasket 13 of leather against the shoulder 10. A disklike plate ld is employed and against its under face is carried a plate formed with a peripheral flange 15 which is threaded for engagement with' the inner surface of the reduced corrugated portion 9 and this latter plate is also formed with an opening centrally thereof and about which is formed a collar 16. A socket 17 is carried by the in ner face of the plate 14 and is designed to engage the adjacent contact 1S of the outer battery. A lamp bulb 19 is adjustably mounted in the socket and is surrounded by a frusto-conical reflector 2O the inner restricted edge of which is beaded to be en-V gaged by set-screws 22 mounted through the collar 16 so as to retain the reflector in the proper position. It is apparent that the bulb may be lighted and extinguished by merely adjusting the same in the socket.
In order to protect the bulb and the batteries from the action of the water a tubular corrugated frame 23 is employed and has the outer end enlarged as at 24 providing the shoulder 25. parent globe 26 is nowl employed and is threaded exteriorly near its outer edge for engagement with the corresponding internal thread on the inner surface of the enlarged portion 24 of the corrugated frame. In connecting the frame 23 to the container or holder l it will be observed that the frame is of a diameter similar to the diameter of the reduced corrugated portion 9 of the holder and is arranged in abutting relation therewith while adjustably connected with the exterior surface of the corrugated frame is a corrugated sleeve 27 which is formed near one end with an annular flange 28 designed for clamping a gasket 29 of leather against the outer face of the shoulder 25. The inner edge of the wise rigidly connected as at 30 to the adjacent edge of the sleeve 1l. This duplex sleeve, of course, serves as a means for detachably connecting the corrugated frame and the container or holder together and may be removed at the time that it is desired to light the lamp bulb by adjusting the latter and may be subsequently replaced so that the globe will protect the bulb.
As indicated, improved means have been provided for protecting the globe. ln repractice opposed pairs of eyes 3l are connected to the outer surface of the container l near the lower edge thereof while pivotally .engaged Vin the opposed pairs of eyes are the looped ends 32 of bails 33 and 34 the bail 33 being depressed medially its ends Vto provide a recess 35 in which is removably arranged the eye 36 formed medially of the ends of the bail 34. l. A device of the character described including a holder, illuminating means carried in the holder, a transparent shield for the illuminating means, said shield being connected to the holder, and a guard for said' shield and consisting of a plurality of bails swingingly connected to the holder and disposed at angles to each other and interlocking when in extended position.
2. A device of the character described including a cylindrical holder, a capfor closing one end of the holder, a loop on the cap, batteries arranged in the holder and in series with each other, a lamp bulb operatively connected te the battery, a reflector mounted below the batteries and disposed about the lamp bulb, a globe detachably con nected to the holder and arranged in surrounding relation with respect to the bulb, Y and swingingly connected bails on the holder and arranged in a cross-like form so asgto interlock with each other and form a guard for the globe. A device of ythe character described including a cylindrical holder, a cap for clos'- ingV one end thereof,pbatteries disposed in the holder andY in series with each other the opposite end'ofthe holder being reduced and corrugated to provide substantial threads, a disk-like plate adjustably mounted in the reduced portion, a socket carriedV by the plate for electrical connection with the battery, a bulb adjustable in the socket, a reflector detachably connected to the plate and surrounding the bulb, a globe, a 'frame for supporting the globe and having the inner portion corrugated, a duplex clamping sleeve engageable with Vthe corrugated frame and the corrugated reduced end of Y the holder for connecting the frame to the holden-and bails pivotally connected to the holder and arranged in interlocking engagement with each other at times to form a guard for the globe.
