Description

' UNITED STATES' PATENT @FFICE JAMES EMERY EATON, 0F UTICA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CQMBINED RULERS AND BLOTTERS.
Specification `forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,839. dated December 10, 1872.
To all whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES EMERY EATON, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in CombinedRuler and Blotter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a bottom view of my invention with the blotting-paper removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
My invention has relation to implements for draftsmen and clerks; and consists in the novel construction and combination of a ruler and attachable plate, adapted for holding a strip of blotting-paper, so arranged that it shall serve as a combined rule and blotter, as
hereinafter described.
A ofthe drawing represents a ruler, usuallyone foot in length, and graduated by any,
desirable?, scale, such as is in common use in offices, schools, &c. B represents an attachable plate, usually of the ksame length as the rule, and preferably a little less in width. When thus made I advise that the lower edges of the rule be beveled, as shown` on the drawing, but such bevel constitutes no essential part of my invention.' The letters c c c repl-resent screws which are )assed through suitable apertures through both the rule and the plate, securing said rule and plate firmly together, and making the latter removable at will. D represents a strip of blottingfpaper passed around the plate B,Yand held securelyl in -position by being clamped between said plate and rule, and heldiirmly by means of the screws c.
' It is obvious that these blotters can be supplied at will by detaching the plate fromthe rule. When the plate B is thus detached or removed the ruler is susceptible of use in the
