ARMORED FIXTURE.
Application filed. January 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Axonnw Kaiuinnioii, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, county of Morgan, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Armored Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in armored fixtures, the primary object of which is to construct an armored fixture which will have all the appearances of an ordinary fixture with an extensible portion so that by the mere pressure of a lever, the device will rise and the person or occupant behind the fixture will be entirely protected by an armor plate in the form of a housing. A further object is to provide an armored fixture which will protect the clerk or accupant and at the same time turn in an alarm in case of a hold-up, the extended housing being operated by foot pressure so that no movement can be observed for releasing the mechanism when the intended victim or occupant is ordered to throw up his hands. My fixture is preferably intended for use in banks and for cashiers desks in stores.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a horizontal cross-sectional view showing my device applied to a flat top desk.
Fig. 2 is a front view of a desk with the mechanism tripped, and the housing in raised or elevated position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line of Fig. 2.
Fig. i is an enlarged view. with parts in section, of one side of my device showing the elevating and locking mechanism made use of.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through one of the posts or legs showing the operation of the alarm.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the weights made use of for actuating the raising mechanism.
Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic View showing the electrical connection from one of the le s to the alarm bell. 2
In carrying out my invention, I provide a fixture 10. This fixture may be con- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 192G.
Serial No. 270,514.
structed as a desk, a counter or any other suitable ofiice, bank or store fixture. Around this fixture is placed a shell 11, this shell being of bullet proof material and surrounding the fixture on 3 sides only, the other side of the fixture or the one used by the occupant or clerk being left open. lVithin this shell 11 is placed a second bullet proof shell 12 which is attached to the top 13 of a desk or other suitable fixture.
The shell 12 has its ends 14 running in guide-ways 15 which are secured to the shell 11 and a guide-way 16 is secured to the front end oi. the shell 12 into which a tongue 17 fits, this tongue being secured to the shell 11.
Secured to the shell 12 is a plurality of racks 18 which engage with a gear wheel 19. The gear 19 is mounted on a shaft 20 which revolves in the bearings 21 located at any suitable point within the fixture 10. ()n this shaft, 1 also mount sheave wheels 21 around which a cable 22 passes.
Secured to the free ends of the cable 22 is a counter weight 22', this counter weight being provided with a tongue 23 and over this tongue 23 additional weights 24 may be placed, each of the weights 2-l being provided with a tongue and groove so as to virtually lock themselves together when placed upon each other. The heft of this counter weight is sufiicient to raise the top of the fixture together with its armor and any additional books or other articles which might be placed upon it, and sufiiciently rapid enough to preclude any possibility of a shot being fired before the armor is raised.
The top 13 of the fixture is counter-sunk as indicated by the numeral 25 and in this counter-sunk portion an armor plate 26 is placed so that there will be no possi ility of a shot being fired through the top oi? the fixture and wounding the occupant in back of the same.
In one of the posts or legs 27 of the fixture is located an alarm button 28 which is electrically connected to an alarm bell 29. This alarm bell may be located in a private guard room or lead direct to the police station and as soon as the shell or housing 12 is released and rises, the button 28 completes the electric circuit turning in an alarm.
Near the bottom of the shell 12 is provided an opening 30 into which a spring actuated bolt 31 enters. This bolt is connected to a bell crank lever 32 by means of 5 a cable or rod 83. One end of the bell crank lever 32 has a foot plate at secured thereto and by pressure upon this plate, the bolt 31 is withdrawn from the opening 30 in the shell 12 allowing the same to ascend and make a bullet proof wall in front of the person operating the same.
I may, if desired, construct my apparatus so that the pressure upon one lever will release several of these protecting plates or 15 bullet proof housing at once but as this is a mere duplication and mechanical expedient, the same is not shown or described in detail.
hen it is desired to lower the device or,
in other words, place the same in condition for the transaction of business, it is only necessary that the top of the fixture be pushed downward until the bolt 31 locks it. This operation will lift the counterweight and at the same time break the electric connection of the alarm and it is only necessary to exert a slight pressure with the foot to release the same, thus leaving the hands free at all times, and requiring no suspicious movement thereof.
My device is especially intended in case of a hold up where a person is commanded to throw up his hands and any movement of the hands would be followed by a shot but as the movement of the foot cannot be readily seen it allows the person or occupant of the fixture to manipulate my device, and before a shot can be fired, the armored plate rises between the would be burglar or holdup man and the occupant being held up.
I may also, if found desirable, place a number of slots or port holes in the shell 12, through which shots may be fired, if found necessary.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the desk or other fixture is armored on both ends, one side and the top and when the shell or housing 12 is released and extended an armored chamber 35 is formed, which has protection on three sides and the top.
My invention, as previously stated, may be applied to any kind of fixture and in banks the various tellers cages and desks may be equipped and all arranged to be simultaneously operated.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A desk provided on one side and both ends with a stationary armor, a movable armored housing closed on three sides, an armored desk top and a drawer carried by and secured to said movable housing, said desk, movable housing and top forming an armored refuge chamber, a rack and pinion connection between the desk and movable housing, weights for acting on the racks and pinion connection for raising the movable housing, and a foot operated locking device for securing the movable housing and desk top in lowered position.
2. A desk provided on one side and both ends with a stationary armor, a movable .armored housing telescopically located with in the armored portion 'of the desk, an armored desk top, and a drawer carried by andsecured to said movable housing, a rack and pinion connection between the desk and movable housing, weights for actuating the rack and pinion connection for raising the movable housing so as to form in conjunction with the desk an armored refuge chamber closed on three sides and the top, a foot operated locking and releasing device for securing the movable housing and desk top in lowered position and releasing the same, and an alarm button attached to the desk for making an electrical connection when said housing is raised.
3. A desk provided on one side and both ends with a stationary armor, a movable housing, a metal lined desk top having a drawer carried by said movable housing, a rack and pinion connection, between the desk and movable housing, weights for actuating the rack and pinion connection for raising the movable housing together with the desk top and drawer, a foot operated device for securing the movable housing in lowered position and for releasing the same, an alarm button attached to the desk for making an electrical connection when the housing and desk top is raised, and guide-ways between the stationary armor and movable housing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
