Description

REERT L. DORAN, OF CHCAG-O, ILLINIS.
EEAJIIN'G PLANT.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
.application filed January E), 1919. Serial No. 270,359.
To @1U iff/mm. t may come Be it known liat l, doi nirr lli. Donnie, a citizen oi' die United il'alzce oi fin'iericiu and a` reeiden of Chicago, county of Cook, and State ol illinois, have invented certain new and use ul lnipr-ovenieiiis in lileating Plants, of which ille iioilo'uiiu v a ejecificaigion.
llie main objects of l'iis invention are io provide an improved forni of heating` plani" 'for utilizing` heavy fuel oils for miscellaneous beating; piuposee and aricularly for house heating; to provide an. improved ar rangement; of elle paris Suiifalile 'for use in ille ireboxes of coal and Wood stoves and furnaces; io provide an iiniiroved 'forni of burner having a bamery oi:l unile eacli of which is adapted to be independenily op; erated; Lo provide improved means; for conrolling` lle adniiee'ion oi2 iiuel uo cach oi Said unite, 'whereby the beat may be regulated from a lisance; and 5o provide an i1n proved iorin and arranggeinen@ of elle gcnereting means and Sub-Haine or pilot burners.
in illustrative embodiment of' the invention .is shown in the accompanying draw ings, in whichlfiguie 1 is a. peispeceiye vien' olf tbe iinproved bi er errane'ed 'i'or use in a house heating,` if nace.
Fig. F2 is a fragmentary View oil a bouselieaiing system equipped with 'llie improved burner and having 'elle control 'valves located al; a distance from libe furnace.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinali eeciiona'l view of one of the unibs, taken on tbe lino :1 -B of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4; is e transverse oi gl'ie units.
ln the eonetruction shown in ille draw ings, the improved beating; planf'; comprises a series or battery of burner unile 3 each of which is complete in itself and nda )ted to be independently controlled. end a. piioi syfsvem el which is independently operated for preheatingr the genereois of eacli of said units.
Each oi the units 3 shown in Fig. 3 comprises a, burner `tube 5 having; i genera'- tor 6 mounted thereon, one end of said burner *nube communicating wifali Said gen` eifaor throug'll'e mixing; chamber 7. The generaor 6 is in the form of' a yaporizingr tube having one end supported by a clip 8 sectional View of one inountei at the front end of the burner tube, the other end of said vafporizing tube engaging an aperture formed in a shield 9, said shield being` rigidly secured to the unis .at the rear ends thereof' for holding 'them in a definite spaced relation. An es bescos Wick 10 mounted in the veporizing tube, which also llas at its outlet end a Wire gauze l1 for .filtering the vaporized fuel asv it passes from tlie wiel?L to the mixinr chamber l'. The' forward end of the vaporizing tube commiinicates with the fuel supply through e `conduit 12. The mixing?r chamber is a hook-shaped member one end of which has threaded engagement with the burner tube 5, 'the other end bein` spaced a slight distance away from the open or rear end of the generator so as to provide an ail. inlet. A plurality of openings or outlets 13 are formed in the burner tube in which are loosely mounted nozzles 14, supported by shoulders l5 positioned so as to permit said nozzles to lie iusli with the rims of the outlets. lnasniueli they are surrounded by rims of iron and are substantially flush with the iron, the nozzles are protected against injury. The nozzles 'le are forafminous, (liek-shaped blocks of rei'iaebory material, suoli as la yn, with a multiplicity of line closely spaced perforations distributed over tbein. A deflecior 1G is secured to the burner tube by screws 17 'in-a position to direct the flame from the burner upwardly in a sheet. The burner tube has a. plurality of gras outlet slots 18 formed in the upper wall thereof for supplying heat to the generator 6. A plate 19 is mounted on the eide oi the burner tube adjacent the gas outlctelote so as to more effectively direct the lieal against the vaporizing `tube (3.
The pilot system is complete in itself, being;` operated independently of the main units, and comprises a plurality of Sublaine burners 2() communicating with a pilot generator 2l. .The sub-burners are mounted on arms which coimnunicate with the generator througll a conduit 22 and are located in position to heat the respective ice generatore: 6 of the ni'ain` burners 3. IRe-A fractory nozzles are carried in the outlets of the subwbiirners and are of the same construction as the nozzles 14 of the main burners. lThe pilot generator' 2l is similar in construction to the generators 6 and. communicates with the tuel supply through a conduit23, the tlow of fuel. being controlled by a valve 24. The vaporizing tube 2l is supported at one end by a brace 25 con.- nected'to the oil inlet valve fitting 2l and at the other end by an air inlet iitting 26, the brace and fitting 26-being both attached to a burner tube 27 disposed beneath `the rfaporizing tube 21. The burner tube 27 coinmunicates with the vaporizing` tube through a mixing chamber 28. The burn-er tube 2l" has some asbestos wicking embedded in a trough 29 formed thereon, to hold a quair tity ot' liquid. fuel for preheating the gew erator tube 2l on starting, and also a plurality ot gas outlet slots 30 for supplying heat tothe vaporizing tube when the .tuelin the trough has been consumed.
The parts are all arranged compactly upon standards and 2 so that the device is suitable for use within the firebox of any of the usual coal andwood .stoves alud ranges' and can be readily inserted or removed, as may be desired.
In the operation of the device, the genen ator 2l is preheated by fuel in the trough.
29, whereupon the valve 24 is opened vto permit the flow of fuel to the generator 2l. The gas formed in this generator passes t the sub-burners 20 where it is ignited. lVhen the generators (i have been su'lliciently heated by the thune from the sub-burners, the valves 3l controlling the l'low ot fuel to thle units may be opened. ln the arrangement shown in. Fig. 2, the burner is seated in the firebox ot' a furnace,'and the valves for regulating the dow of fuel to the units are located at a distance from the heating plant. f A tank' 32 oi fuel under pressure is provided for supplying liquid fuel to the burner, said tank being connected to thc pilot generator 2l by a tube 33 and to the unit valves 31 by a tube 34:. The pilot. or sub-burners may thus be kept burning conf tinuously duringr 'the cold season ot' the year,
'except when it becomes necessary to relill.
the tank 32. The number of units in operation is controlled by the valves 3l., which. may be located at a distance so that it is unnecessary to go to the furnace for regu lating the heat o't'the plant. tubes known as hollow wire are capable oi? delivering oil fast enough for the ordinary house-heating plant. These may be led'anywhere like Wires and need no protecting conduits or insulation do electric wires.
By reason ol. the peculiar composition and form of the nozzles 14, they become incandescent When heated, and provide a concentration ot' radiated heat much more intense than the usual flame of a hydrocarbon burner and more uniform for heating and `co'oking purposes. The effect is similar to Sm al l. metal that of a bed of glowing coals at 'the best stage o'l" a coal lire. lVith 'this torni oft nozzie, the 'fuel is entirely' burned and no free carbon will be deposited on the burner.
The feature ot using refractory material a nozzle for a burner oi this type described and. more broadly claimed. in my copending application, Serial No. 270,360, filed ot even date herewith.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will. be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted. Without. departingtrom the spirit of this invention dee fined by the 'following claims.
