YARN-CHAIN TRUMPET.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO E. RHoADEs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Yarn-Chain Trumpets, of which the following description, in. with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to trumpets such as are employed for guiding yarn chains or ropes in textile machinery and particularly such as are employed in guiding the yarn chain or rope in a warper or balling machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a trumpet the guiding aperture of which may be adjusted to cooperate with yarn chains or ropes of varying sizes and thus dispense with the necessity for providing a number of trumpets of different sizes for a given machine.
The object provide a trumpet which shall be made up of a plurality, preferably two, sections separable to adjust the size of the trumpet aperture and at the same time to provide means such as a bar, preferably at the mouth and also preferably at the outlet of'the trumpet, to bridge the space between the sections when separated in the path of the yarn chain and thus insure a proper guide for the yarn chain through the adjusted trumpet.
These and other objects of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is aview in perspective of the main portion of a balling machine showing a trumpet embodying a preferred form of the invention associated therewith.

The present invention relates to the trumpet or device by which a chain or rope of connection of the invention is further to yarn is guided in textile machinery. Such a device is particularly useful 1n warpers and balling machines but it is to be understood that a trumpet embodying this invention may be employed in any type of Y textile machines where it may be of use.
The balling machine illustrated is of the type shown in the patent to Rhoades N0.

In this machine a number of yarns or threads taken from spools or bobbins on a creel are gathered together to form the yarn chain and this chain is wound spirally upon a beam or roll to form the ball. The ball 1 of yarn is wound upon a roll or cylinder 2 and its revolution is effected by a pair of drums 3 and 4 upon which the ball rests and which are driven from a suitable source of power. In order that the chain or rope 5 of yarn as it comes from the creel and the usual measuring machine may be wound evenly in spirals of the proper pitch it is customary to employ a trumpet mounted on a carriage 6. This carriage is guided on a transverse rod 7 and on a transverse rotatable traverse shaft 8. This traverse shaft is provided with double or crossing threads 9 cooperating with a follower on the carriage 6 so that as the traverse shaft is rosize and character and as it is desirable that the yarn chain shall pass from the mouth of the trumpet in the required compact form it is necessary that the mouth of the guiding aperture of the trumpet shall conform in size to the yarn chain. Consequently it has been the practice to provide trumpets having apertures of varying sizes and to place a trumpet ofthe proper size on the carriage.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a single trumpet for use upon the given machine and to provide for the adjustment of this trumpet so as to adapt it to any size and character of yarn chain which may be handled at any given time in the machine.
tie-l A preferred form of trumpet embodying the invention is illustrated in the drawings. A standard 10 is adapted to be secured in the usual vertical socket 11 of the carriage 6 by the set screw 12 and this standard is provided, preferably integrally therewith, with a transversely extending bed plate' 13 grooved on its upper face longitudinally at 14:. This standard and bed plate serve as a support for the adjustable members of the trumpet.
The trumpet is made up of a plurality of sections which are separable to adjust the size on": the trumpet aperture. Preferably the trumpet is divided longitudinally of its axis into two similar laterally separable sections 15 and 16. The body portion of each of these sections corresponds in! general shape with one half of the usual trumpet. Each section is supported by, preferably by being made integral with, a base plate 17 and 18. These base plates are fitted to slide on the upper surface of the bed plate 13 and are provided with ribs 19, fitting in the groove 14 so as to be guided properly there with. Each base plate is slotted longitudinally at 20 and set screws 21 are provided passing'through the slots 20 into the bed plate 13.
It will be seen that when the sections 15 and 16 are separated a space is leftbetween the sections which would interfere with the proper guiding oi. the yarn chain. In order to secure the proper guiding of the yarn chain through the adjusted trumpet means are provided for bridging the I space between the sections in the path of the chain. Such means in the preferred form are shown as smooth transverse bars located one at the mouth and one at the outlet from the trumpet aperture and at the top of the trumpet. The location shown is due to the fact that in a balling machine the chain of yarn usually enters the trumpet along a path extending down toward the mouth of the trumpet and passes from the trumpet in a path extending upwardly away, from the trumpet. Consequently, if in the use of the trumpet the path of the yarn chain is different, the bars will be located at the points necessary to guide the yarn chain in its required path.
In the construction illustrated the bridging and guiding bar 22 at the mouth of the trumpet is secured at one end in a flange 23 projecting forwardly from the section 15 of the trumpet and slides freely at its other end in the flange 24L projecting forwardly from the section 16 of the trumpet. The bridging and guiding bar 25 at the outlet from the trumpet is similarly arranged being secured in a flange 26 projecting rearwardly from the section 15 and slid ing freely in a flange 27 projecting rearwardly from the section 16 of the trumpet.
It will thus be seen that by separating the sections 15 and 16 the size of the trumpet aperture may be adjusted to a very considerable extent and that in all cases the yarn chain in passing through the trumpet will be guided and directed in a compact mass'through' the trumpet to the ball or the desired point in the machine.
The construction is simple and strong and the parts are easily replaceable if worn or injured. All danger of the proper size trumpet not being employed by reason of its being lost or mislaid or by reason or" inattention or carelessness of theoperator is eliminated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.'A trumpet for guiding a yarn chain divided longitudinally of its axis into two similar sections separable laterally to adjust the size of the trumpet aperture, means for securing the sections in adjusted position, and chain guiding means located at each end of the trumpet aperture bridging the space between the adjusted sections in the path of the chain and acting to prevent the chain from entering said spaces at either end.

A trumpet for guiding a yarn chain comprising two sections separable laterally to adjust the size of the trumpet aperture, means for securing the sections in adj ustcd position, and a bar secured in one section and slidable in the other section and bridging the space between the sections in the path of the yarn chain.
