Be it known that I, GEORGE Junnsrsm, a citizen of Czecho-Slovakia, residing at VVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of an air motor for drills in which the motor is extremely simple in construction embodying comparatively few parts and one that is inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts here in more fully described, and shown in the accompanying drawings and wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of an air motor drill constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the inlet and outlet openings of the casing and the tangential air receiving pockets in the rotor,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same with a drill carried thereby,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the rotor removed from the casing,
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the rotor,
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the inner closure plate for the motor casing,
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view thereof, and
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the casing with the rotor and closurering removed therefrom.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated an air motor especially designed for use in connection with drills, the motor comprising a central plate 8 having hand grips 9 diametrically carried thereby while a cylindrical casing 10 projects centrally from one face thereof, the casing being open at its outer end and internally threaded as indicated in Fig. 2. The inner end of the casing 10 is of increased cross sectional area to provide a substantially V-shaped bearing 11 for purposes presently to appear, while a central stud 12 projects from the plate 8 axially of the casing 10 and is inclosed thereby with the outer end of the stud terminating inwardly of the open outer end,

of the casing, the terminal end of the stud 12 being socketed as at 3 for purposes presently to appear.
A rotor as shown more clearly in Figs. 1 to 4 includes a cylindrical body portion 14 having a central opening 15 adapted for sliding reception on the stud 12, the bottom wall of the opening 15 having a socket 16 therein for the reception of the ball bearing 12 receiving the thrust from the stud 12, the ball extending into the adjacent socketed end 13 of the stud to space the inner end of the stud from the bottom wall of the socket. As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the rotor 14 carries a peripheral flange 18 having a V-shaped recess therein adapted for reception on the V-shaped projection 11 of the casing 10 to form a guide and additional bearing for the rotor within the casing. A plurality of air receiving pockets 19 extend from the periphery of the rotor 14 tangentially inwardly and so positioned relative to the casing 10 to successively register with the air inlet opening 20 and the outlet opening 21 in the side wall of the casing. The outer face of the rotor 14 is provided with an annular rib 22 surrounding a projection 23 having a rectangular socket 24 provided therein for the reception of the shank 25 of a drill.
A closure plate or ring for the outer end of the casing adapted to retain the rotor in position within the casing includes a ring 26 having a threaded periphery. 27 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 for threaded engagement with the outer end of the casin 10, the ring carrying an inwardly directe annular flange 28 adapted for positioning between the periphery of the rotor 14 and the casing 10, the inner face of the ring 26 being provided with an annular groove 29 for the reception of the annular rib 22 upon the rotor to constitute a further bearing therefor, wrench receiving openings 30. being provided in the outer face of the ring 26 for securing the same in position within the casing.
From this detailed description of the construction of the device, it is thought that the operation thereof will be at once apparent, it being understood that any suitable method of supplying air to the inlet opening 20 of the casing 10 may be employed while the exhaust or outlet opening 21 may communicate directly with the atmosphere or the air may be conducted therefrom in confinement, if desired. The air entering the inlet is received in the tangentially arranged pockets 19 which will cause a rotation of the rotor lat within the casing 10, the stud 12 receiving the thrust during the operation of the tool at the ball bearing 17 while the further bearing points ll and 22 insure an even rotary movement of the rotor 14.- to the exclusion of any possible vibrations. While the socketed extension 23 is illustrated as carrying a drill 25, it is to be understood that other torn s of implements may be employed that are adapted to be driven in rotary directions.
What is claimed as new is 1. A. device of the class described comprising a jab-to, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, 1 eans for retaining the rotor in the casing, the casing having air inlet and outlet openings communicating with the rotor and a tool carried by said rotor.
2. A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means for retaining the rotor in the casing, the casing having air inlet and outlet openings coinmunicatin g with the rotor and a tool carried b said rotor, the rotor having tangentially arranged air receiving pockets therein adapted to register.successively with the inlet and outlet openings in the casing.
3. A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means for retaining the rotor in the casing, the casing having air inlet and outlet openings com niunicating with the rotor, a tool carried by said rotor, and a tl'irust bearing between the plate and rotor.

A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means for retaining the rotor in the casing, the casing having air inlet and outlet openings com niunicating with the rotor, a tool carried. by said rotor, said rotor having a central socket therein, a stud centrally carried by said plate within the casing and adapted for reception in said rotor socket and a thrust bearing ball positioned between the end of said stud and the bottom wall of said rotor socket.
5. A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means for retaining the rotor in the casing, a casing having air inlet and outlet openings communicating with the rotor, a tool carried by said rotor, and means for retaining the rotor in said casing comprising a ring having threaded engagement with the casing.

A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means for retaining the rotor in the casing, the casing having air inlet and outlet openings communicating with the rotor, a tool carried by said rotor, means for retaining the rotor in said casing comprising a ring having threaded engagement with the casing, and an annular collar carried by said ring interposed between the casing and the rotor.

A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one face of said plate, a rotor within the casing, means "for retaining the rotor in the casing, the easing having air inlet and outlet openings communicating with the rotor, a tool carried by said rotor, means for retaining the rotor in said casing comprising a ring having threaded engagement with the casing, an annular collar carried by said ring interposed between the casing and the rotor, and a coacting annular rib and groove formed on the adjacent faces of the rotor and ring.
8. A device of the class described comprising a plate, handles carried thereby, a casing projecting from one side of said plate, an annular flange formed on the inner wall of said casing adjacent the plate, a rotor within the casing, a peripheral flange carried by the rotor adapted for rotary engagement with the shoulder on said casing, means for retaining the rotor within the casing and a tool receiving member carried by said rotor.
