To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOMINIC A. TROTIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Propulsion Means, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of improved means for utilizing the reaction of fluid under pressure against the surface of a sphere held by the action of said fluid in certain relative positions to a concave shell of the same radius as said sphere or against the body of fluid in which a ship, aeroplane or dirigible is disposed and movable, to propel the ship, aeroplane or dirigible.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.-
In the accompanying drawings, I have elected to show the improvement as embodied in a ship, but it is believed that the said showing will suffice to make clear the applicability of the invention to aeroplanes of different types as well as to dirigibles or motor-driven balloons. The said drawings comprise:

Manifestly the hull 1 may be of any con struction compatible with the purpose of my invention without affecting the same. I prefer, however, to equip the hull with a rudder 2 and a space 4, the latter being disposed between a rudder post 3 and a stern piece 5, and formed in an interposed frame as shown in Fig. 1.
Arranged in fixed relation in the stern piece 5 and the forward upright of the frame alluded to is the combined socket member and mouth 6 of the improved means, the same being preferably, though not necessarily, in one piece of cast metal or alloy. The said combined mouth and socket member 6 is provided at diametrically opposite points on the perimeter of its rear and comparatively large portion with flanged lugs 10 and these are bolted at 11 to the forward upright of the frame to assist in maintaining the member in its working position. Interiorly the member 6 is of semi-spherical form, and on the same is formed a central forwardly-extending and interiorly threaded nipple, as shown, to receive the rear end of a pipe 9 for delivering rearwardly a jet of steam, air, gas, water, or other fluid under pressure. The means for so supplying the jet of fluid (water in the example illustrated) is not of the essence of my invention, and I have therefore deemed it unnecessary to illustrate the same.
Fixed to the rudder post 3 that constitutes the rear upright of the frame referred to is a retainer 8, disposed opposite the member 6 and concave at its rear side. The retainer 8 is merely for the purpose of holding the sphere when pressure above described is not. being applied.
Arranged within and spaced in relation to the socket member 6 and between the same and the retainer 8 is the globular deflector 7 of the improvement; the said deflector being preferably, though not necessarily, mobilei. 6., adapted to freely move between the member 6 and the retainer 8 in all directions with a view to diminishing friction incidental to the operation of the improvement.
In the practical operation of the illus trated embodiment, steam, air, gas, or water under pressure is delivered through the globular deflector 7 which is thrust and held by the pressure in suspension by a natural law, the steam, air, gas, or water under pressure meanwhile passing rearwardly between the inner side of the memmer 6 and the deflector 7, and being forcibly impelled in annular formation against the deflector 7 and the body of water in which the ship is disposed and movable. Thus the steam, air, gas, or water jetted against the said sphere 7 and the body of water is adapted to exert great purchase or pressure throughout an area much greater than the diameter of the conduit 9, with the result that the ship will be powerfully propelled.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the mobile globular deflector 7 is adapted to accommodate itself to the passage of steam, air, gas, or Water from the conduit 9 and in that way promote the efficiency of the propelling means.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a propelling means, the combination of a ship hull, a curvilinear combined mouth and socket member with exterior lugs fixed to the hull and having a semi-spherical interior and also having a forwardly extending central and interiorly threaded nipple, a conduit threaded into said nipple, a retainer fixed to the hull and concave at its forward side and having said side arranged in rear of and spaced from the combined mouth and socket member, and a mobile globular deflector disposed in the combined mouth and socket member and interposed between the same and the retainer and free to be turned about its center in all directions.
2. Jet propelling means of the reaction type, comprising a body to be propelled, a rearwardly-disposed curvilinear-combined mouth and socket member carried by said body and having a semi-spherical inner side, means for supplying fluid under pressure to the center of the interior of said combined mouth and socket member, a retainer carried by said body and arranged in rear of and spaced from said member, and a mobile globular deflector disposed and movable about its center in and adapted to be spaced by the fluid under pressure from the combined mouth and socket member and interposed between the same and the retainer and adapted to spread or deflect said fluid under pressure.
