3TB AND WALL LADDER.

To all whom it may; concern.-
Be it known that l, LUoWIe Susan, a citizen of the Pepublic of Switzerla ul, residing at Edgewater, county of Bergen, and'State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Step and Vi all Ladders, of which the following is a speci- This invention relates to improvements in combined step and Wall ladders, and has as its special object the provision of aladder which may be extended at full length, used in a folded position as a steo ladder or further folded for storage.
A further object is to arrange the elements thereof so that they are firmly secured when in any of their adjusted positions, and finally to provide a novel. form of joint connections comprised of integral. elements, secured to the adjoining ends of the ladder columns.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a niaterial part of this specification, and in which i Figure 1 is a side elevational VlGW showing a ladder made in accordance ith the invention in a partially folded posnaon.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side clevational. View of the same, slimming,- the columns in an extended position. I

developed of the oppositely Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 11, 1918.
pllCll manner \V edges with hinge and when, as shown in Fig. 2,
Pititcnted Apr. 2?, 19.20. Serial No. 227,895.
The ladder is con'iprised of four like col unins arranged in pairs, as and 12, and capable of being closed together in a com device isuscd as a step ladder as indicated in Fig. 1, the columns 10 and 12 are s read at their lower ends and held in an &(l]ll$ll6(l position by links lei and 15, containing slots,
the same being engaged by screws 16 to the outer runs of the ladder columns, the links being slotted longitudinally and engaged by' bolts it provided with Winged clamp nuts 18, the links being; disposed upon each side of the ladder columns. tend from side to side between each pair of the columns 10 and 12 servingto brace the larts and also act as steps torthe person using the ladder.
In the preferred form of cap, a blank, 7 shown fully developed in Fig. 8, is used, the same comprising a cap portion :20 having integrally formed lateral elements 22, adapted to be bent along the lines 21, downward over the upper ends of the ladder columns,
and joined with one of the portions 22 is a portion 24;, bent along the line 23 at one end lroin the portion $32 and along the line 25, from the portion 26. tron 28, together with the section 24', is
The adjacent secadap'tcd lo be secured to the narrow edges of the ladder columns, and bent along the" line Q9 is the portion 30. Thee portions after bending are secured firmly to the lad der columns by means (if bolts passingthrough the wood columns and openings 33,
in the portions and 30. Extending from the center sions 34. a nd 35, containing longitudinal slots 36 and 37, the ,material 36 and 87,;When
Thus it will be seen, that the columns 10 and 19 are provided at their adjacent end oints coi'inectlng' them,
7 another pin 38 passed through the openings at the opposite edges of the ladder elements, they are held rigidly extended, the clamps 17 in the links l-l and la adding to the rigidity.
In the modification shown in l ig's. 9, 1.0 and 11 a blank havrngphde portions 4-5 hen not" in use. When the 60" Fixed rungs 19 ex- 70 and lateral extensions 46 and 47 is provided,
to the former of which is an extension 48,
- provided with holes through which the bolts may be passed. Separate eye elements, 50
and 52 form the hinges as shown inFigs. 10 and 11 and have openings 53 and 54, the re maining material being .bent t .fornina circle and act as independent ars for the hinges.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat appearing, strong and serviceable ladder has been disclosed,- capable of being ,extended and used against a Wall or the like, or folded and used as a step ladder andwhen not in use-0f being compactly folded for storage.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, v A blank for forming a member of a ladder hinge comprising a cap portionadapted to be used on the top end of a ladder stile, side portions adapted to engage the opposite sides of the ladder stile, a band like extensi'on on one of said side portions adapted to be bent around the sides of the ladder stile,
portions extending from the cap portion on both sides thereof, and slots immediately adjacent to the cap portion in the last mentioned portion, said portions being adapted to be bent down in engagement With-the front and rear edges of the ladder stile with the portions between the slots curved to form eyes and with the slots adapted to receive the eyes on another hinge member, said eyes after being alined, being adapted to receive the pintle ot the hinge.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
LUDWIG SEGER.
