GRATE BAR.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD L. CLOSE, OF MARION, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO MARION FOUNDRY CORPORATION, OF MARION, INDIANA, A CORPORATION.
GRATIS-BAR.
Application filed April 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD L. GLosE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a grate-bar; and one of the objects of the present invention consists in the provision of an open-work grate-bar which not only prevents the bar from becoming overheated, by affording a passage for the air, but provides an ample air supply to support proper combustion.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of a grate-bar formed of a plurality of spaced parallel integral members, the inner member of which is formed on a curve longitudinally with the widest part of the member at the transverse center and tapering toward the ends of the gratebar whereby said bar is greatly strengthened at its middle.
A still further object of the invention consists in the provision of a grate-bar of the above character, in which the horizontal fingers have their lower receding faces formed into cutting edges for reducing the size of the larger particles of the residue of the burnt fuel when the bar is oscillated.
I accomplish the above objects of the invention, and such others as may appear from a perusal of the following description and claim, by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved grate-bar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the grate-bar on the line 33 in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, a grate-bar comprising a unit structure composed of at least three or more longitudinal members 10, 11 and 12 which are arranged in parallel planes and which extend longitudinally of the bar. These members terminate in heads 14: and 15, the latter being provided on their side-faces with the trunnions 16 which provide the pivots upon which the bar oscillates. The members 10, 11 and 12 are connected together at uniformly spaced intervals between heads 14 and 15 by means of the transverse partition walls 18, thereby providing a plurality of rectangular pas- Specification of Letters Patent. Pate1ited Apr. 27, 1920- 1919. Serial No. 291,626.
sageways 19 extending vertically through said grate-bar. The open-work structure of the grate-bar formed by passageways 19 provides the means for the passage of air through said bar and prevents it from becoming overheated, and also afi'ords ample air supply for promoting proper combustion. The grate-bar is provided with the usual laterally disposed fingers 20 and 21, of which longer fingers 20 are placed alternately between the shorter fingers 21. The distance between the longitudinal axes of the several grate-bars is such as to cause the ends of the fingers 20 of one bar to extend past the adjacent ends of fingers 20 on the adjacent bars, this being common in gratebar construction.
It will be noted in examining Fig. 3 that the height of the fingers 20 is greater than their length, which construction imparts great strength and prevents the fingers from being broken off. It will also be noted in Fig. 3 that fingers 20 have a uniform horizontal thickness from their bases to their free ends and this thickness extends downwardly some distance below their surface plane before merging into the receding cutting edges, which construction contemplates keeping the thin knife cutting edges a sufficient distance away from the seat of fire to prevent their premature deterioration. When the grate-bar is oscillated thecutting edges 24 of fingers 20 will cut and reduce the size of the larger particles of the residue of the burnt fuel, thereby accelerating its movement in discharging the same through the grate-bars and into the receiving ash pit. below. Each of the grate-bars, as are neces sary in the construction of a given fire-pot, is provided with a depending arm 25, and these arms are connected to a common actuator-rod which is reciprocated by means of a rod extending outside of the fire-pot and accessible to the operator. This oscillating mechanism is not illustrated as it forms no part of the present invention.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A grate-bar comprising a group of spaced members, an inner member of said group having its lower edge formed on a convex curve for increasing the vertical diameter of its central portion, means for joining the ends of all the members in the group together to form a unitary structure, a plurality of transverse Walls for connecting said members at points intermediate their ends, and laterally disposed fingers having horizontal portions formed substantially of uniform thickness with lower receding portions terminating in cutting edges, for reducing the size of the larger particles of the residue of the burnt fuel. a
In Witness Where0f,-I have hereunto set 10 my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 12th day of April, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nineteen.
