ADJUSTABLE GUIDE-CLAMP.
implication fired July 20, 1918.
To all who 2i it may concern:
Be it known that I, Henna M. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVeJt raulrfort, in the county of Franklin and Eltate Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Guide Clamps of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention is an improved adjustable guide clamp for mine and elevator shafts, the dbject of the invention being to provide an improved clamping device for use at a joint in a guide in a mine or elevator shaft to hold the meeting ends of the guide members in exact alinement with each other and to also secure the guide members to the guide plate so that the guide will be kept plumb and accidents caused by derangement of the guide will be averted. V' ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of devices her -inafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is an elevation of a guide and guide plate provided with guide clamps constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. 7
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the guide members.
8 is similar view showing a modification of the guide member.
Fig. l is a similar view showing another modification of the guide member.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a modification.
For the purposes of this speciication a guide plate such as is in use in a mine shaft is indicated at l and two members of a vertical guide for a cage or elevator car are indicated 2 arranged in superposed relation and with their opposing ends abutting. The guide plate is preferably made of half inch boiler plate and is of suitable length and width and is secured by lag screws 3 or other suitable fastening devices to a concrete shaft wall or to steel I-beams or otherwise secured to the side of the shaft as conditions may require.
On one side of the guide members and at the joint between the same is a clamping member a which comprises a base 5 and an arm 6. The arm is at right angles to the base and is at one end of the base and is arranged midway between opposite sides Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof so that the base forms a shoulder 7 at opposite sides of the arm. The base bears on the guide plate and the arm 6 of the base is arranged in a recess 8 formed in one side of the meeting ends of the guide members T he base of the clamping member l is arranged in a gib 9 which is riveted as at l0 or otherwise fixedly and securely fastened on the guide plate the said gib serving to l o and cover as well as to secure the base d guide member.
G11 the opposite side of the guide joint from the clamping member 4: is a clamping member 11 which is similar in construction to said member 4: and the arm 12 of which 's also rabbeted in the guide members 2 ac es the joint. The base 13 of the clampin member 11 is slidable on the guide p e 1 and is slidably held in a gib l-fl which is riveted or otherwise suitably secured on the guide plate and which is provided with a slot 15 to clear the arm 12. A )air of blocks 16 which are arranged in spaced relation are secured by rivetc or other suitable means to the guide plate and are provided with alined unthreaded bores. An adjusting screw 1'? is slidable in he b res of said blocks and has one end end in a recess 18 in the base of the clampmember 11. An adjusting nut 20 has ireaded engagement with the screw and is arrangec between the blocks 16 and may be turned by means of a suitable lever which may be engaged with any of a series of radial openings 21 with which the nut is provided. The clamping members are provided with studs 22 in their opposing ends which in the guide members 2. A. bolt rod connects the arms of the clamping members and passe through the guide.
By means of the screw 17, the nutand the blocks the clamping member 11 may be forced toward the fixed clamping member a to cause the members of the guide, at the firmly secured between said clamping members and to the guide plate so that the guice members may be maintained in exact vertical alinement with each other and casual movement or deflection of the guide effectually prevented, thereby averting a cidents such as are occasioned by the guides of a mining shaft or elevator shaft getting out of plumb. My improved clamping device also greatly facilitates repairs of the guide.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings 1 show a modification in the construction of the guide members in which the arm is cross shaped as at 24.
In Fig. 4 I show another modification in which the arm 25 of the clamping member is coextensive in width with the base 5.
In Fig. 6 I show another modification which the adjusting nut 20 is solidly fixed to the outer end of the adjusting screw 17 and one of the blocks dispensed with, only one block 16 being employed, which has a threaded bore with which the adjusting screw isthreadedly engaged.
While I have herein described and shown preferred embodiments of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a guide plate and a guide extending thereaoross, a fixed clamping member secured on the guide plate and bearing against one side of the guide, an adjustable clamping member mounted for movement on the guice plate and bearing against the opposite side of the guide, and means to adjust and hold said adjustable clamping member, the said clamping members having arms arranged at right angles thereto and positioned in recesses in the sides of the guide.
2. In combination with a guide plate and a guide extending thereacross, a fixed clamping member secured on the guide plate and bearing against one side of the guide, an adjustable clamping member mounted for movement on the guide plate and bearing against the opposite side of the guide, each of said members having a right angularly disposed arm arranged in a recess on the adjacent side of the guide, a bolt connecting said arms and passed through said guide, and means for adjusting the movable clamping member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
