TTERS, OR THE LIKE.
Application filed August 28, 1919.
To all coito/a t may Concern Be it known that l, AUGUST D. KUMPF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of lhiladelphia, State ot Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful actuating Mechanism Jfor llfindows, Sashes, Shutters, or the like.
My invention consists ot a novel construction of an actuating mechanism for windows, sashes, shutters, or the like, ot that character which customarily pivoted or hinged at their upper portions to the wall of the store, factory or other building.
Shutters of this general character are frequently heavy and cumbersome and consequently difficult to manipulate or to open and close, and my presentinvention comprises a novel mechanism tor enabling` one or more shutters of this general nharacter to be readily opened and closed by manually ope ated mechanism controlled by a single operator whereby the opening and closing ot the shutters or their retention in intermediate positions can be readily and expeditiously effected. f
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of toggle mechanisms and their adjuncts, comprising levers collocated with a pair ot sprocket chains or the like connected by suitable cross-heads, each of said cross-heads having actuating mechanism connected therewith, so that upon actuating a carrier composed of said cross-heads and chains in a desired direction, the shutter. sash or the like can be expeditiously raised and lowered, or opened Vand closed or retained in intermediate positions according to requirements.
It further consists oi a novel construction of toggle levers and means for actuating them.
It further consistsot a novel construction of actuating mechanism comprising an elongated threaded stem or screw splined to a suitable support, in conjunction with means for actuating said screw, so as to effect the operation ot the toggle mechanism, whereby the shutters are actuated in the desired direction.
lt further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will ber hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, l have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will be Specification of Letters Patent.

found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable esults, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization ot these instrumentalities as lerein shown and described.
Figure l represents a vertical sectional view ot an actuating mechanism for windows, sashes, shutters, or the like, embodying my invention, certain ot the parts being shown in elevation, and the section being taken on line 1-l F ig. 2.
Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2-2 l ig. l, on an enlarged scale, showing the shutter in open position and the toggle mechanisms and their adjuncts also in open position.
Fig. 3 represents a sectional View similar to Fig. 2, but showing the shutter in closed position and the toggle mechanisms and their adjuncts also in closed position.
F ig. 1i represents a section on line s-/l Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 represents a section on line 5-5 `Fig. 4;.
liig. 6 represents a side elevation showing portion of the connection seen at the right or Figs. 2 and 3 as composed oi fusible material. l
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawings i designates the window, sash or shutter o be actuated or operated, the same being hinged or pivoted at its top or upper end to the window frame 8 ot the store, factory or other building. At various points I at- `ach to the inner tace of the shutter or the ilre l, my novel shutter operating or actuatng mechanism ll, which will now be described in detail, it being apparent from F.' 2 and 3 that I have shown two shutter actuating mechanisms employed, but it will apparent that it desired this number can be increased or diminished. The mechanism 4C comprises two cross heads 5 and 6, which are. joined by the preferably parallel sprocket 'chains 7 and 8, whose terminals are secured to said cross-heads in any suitable manner, thereby forming a carrier or actuator for the toggle mechanism.
9 designates a vertical pillar, post or I beam within the building to which the shutter 1 is pivoted, said I beam having the bracket l0 secured thereto in any suitable manner, said bracket having pivotally secured thereto, the bell crank or elbow lever l1 com irismothe lone' arm and trie short 2 D D arm 13 said arms beinfr Jre't'erabl 1 integral J b l d c:
'angularly arranged and pivoted to the bracket l0 at the point Ll. T ie short arin 13 is secured to the sprocket chain 7 at the point l5, by a'bolt and nut or the like, while the outer end of the long arm l2, has one end of the link 16 pivoted thereto 17, the other end of said link lo being pivoted at 1S to the shutter l.
The I beam 9, has a bracket 19 securec thereto preferably at a point opposite to the bracket l0, to which is pivoted at 20, the extension 2l of the angular lever 22, the latter comprising the short arn'i 23 and the long arm 24. rEhe short arm 23 is connected at 25 by any suitable means to the sprocket chain 8, While the long arm is pivotally connected at 2G to one end of the link 27, Whose other end is pivotally connected at 28 to the interior oil vthe shutter l, it being seen that the levers ll and l2 when assembled and correlated with their links 16 and 27, the sprocket chains and their supporting b ackets forni a toggle mechanism o-r system of toggle levers, which When a pull is exerted on said chains in the proper direction, will cause the shutter l to move from the position seen in Fig. 2 to that indicated in Fig. 3.
For heavy shutters and the like, l preterably employ a second set oit toggle levers as 29 and 30, which are supported upon brackets 3l and 32, respectively, carried by the vertical post or l beam 33, as will be understood from the left of Figs. 2 and 3,
and as the construction and manner of as-V sembling the toggle levers 29 and 30 is the same as those already described and seen the right or' Figs. 2 and 3, l deem it unnecessary to describe them in detail.
It will be evident from Fig. 2 that a pull on the cross-head G in the Vdirection ot the arron7 a, will cause the shutter l, the toggle levers and their adjuncts to move from the open position seen in Figs. l and 2 to the closed position seen in Fig. 3 and that a pull in the opposite direction upon the crosshead 5 will move the parts iro-in the closed position seen in Fig. 3 tothe open position seen fin Fig. 2. The desired actuation of the cross-heads 5 and 6 and their chains 7 and 8 may be obtained in various ways but l preferably employ the construction now to be described. Y
To the cross-head 5 l attach one end of the connection 34's, which passes over the pulley 35 rotatably mounted in a hanger 36, the other end thereof, being connected to the rod 37, Whose opposite end 38 is swiveled or secured by a nut 39 or the like to the elongated screw or threaded stem d0, which is provided with the longitudinal groove el, Whose Walls are engaged Vby the guide d2 (see d and 5) which 'is supported by, or forms apart oi' the bracket d3, Vwhereby said screw is thus splincd upon said bracket and capable of a longitudinal movement only thereon, and no rotary movement, relative thereto. 'llhe cross-head G has one end of the chain or other connection 44 connected thereto, the other end of said chain passing over the pulley and being connected at LJCG to the screw or threaded stem a0, as Will be indicated from the lett hand portion of Fig. Ll.
ii7 designates an internally threaded sleeve, which is pinned or otherwise Secured to the sleeve or extension 48 oit the Worm gear 49, which is actuated by the Worm 50, it being apparent that the Worin Li9 and the internall f threaded sleeve e7 rotate as a unit, said sleeve rotating in the bearings l. rllhe Worin 50 can be rotated in any suitable manner as manually or otherwise, and it will be apparent that the rotation oic the Worm gear i9 and sleeve 4,27, will canse the elongated sc rew or threaded stein l0 to travel longitudinally in the desired direction and thus impart a pnll or a movement in the desired direction to the connections ila, 37, and 3d, thereby actuatino in the de- 9 sired direction the cross-heads oV and 6 and their sprocket chains 7 and 8.
lt is obvious that the gear i9 and Athe internally threaded sleeve Li7 can be held from longitudinal movement by any suitable means", as by the enlargement 54 shown in Fig. but omitted from Figs. 2 and 3, which is retained between the bearings 5l. The connection 3d may Ybe constructed or" fusible material as indicated at the point 52. (see Fig. 6) so that in Case of lire, when the shutter or shutters l are Vopen as seen in Fig. 2, said fusible portionivill melt, and the Weight of said shutter ivillcause it to assume the closed position seen in Fig. 3.
The operation is as follows l lll/Then the parts are in the position seen in Fi 3, it Will be apparent that the shut ter, sash, WindenT or the like l stands in snbstantially a vertical position, and when it is desired to open the same or to actuate the shutter so that it will appear in inclined or open position as seen in Fig. l, it is onlv necessary for the operator to rotate the Worm 50, which can be done manually or by the application of power to the ivheel or pulley- 53, whereupon the Worm il Will rotate and the sleeve 4l-7 ivill also'be rotated in nmson therewith, whereby by reason of the threaded connection ivith the elongated leed screw(see liig. 4,) it Will be apparent thatthe actuator composed ot the sprocket chains 7, S and the cross-heads 5 and 6 will be moved to the right orf the position seen in TEig. 3, into the position seen in Fig. 2, whereupon the shutter l will be raised into the position seen in Figs. l and 2 or into any intermediate positions desired.
W hen it is desired to close the shutter, the worm 50 and the worm gear 49 are actuated in the opposite direction and the parts move from the position seen in Figs. l and 2 to the position seen in Fig. 3.
It will be apparent that by the employment of the elongated screw 40 and' its adj uncts, whereby the connections are had with the toggle mechanism, that the movement or opening and closing of the shutter or shutters will be regular and uniform and the shutter or shutters can be held in any intermediate positions desired.
It will be further apparent that my invention is applicable to shutters of any size or weight and that any desired number of shutters can be operated uniformly and synchronously.
It will be apparent that other mechanisms in lieu of the cross-heads 5, 6 and the parallel connecting sprocket chains 7 and 8 may be employed with equal facility, and I do not desire therefore to be restricted to the precise mechanism l have herein shown and described.
llaving thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
