To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE-W. SWIFT, J r., residing at Bordentown, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful. Improvement in Mechanism for Making Open- Face Envelops, whereof the following is a specification, reference being .had to theac- 'companying drawings. f
My invention relates to envelops of the class wherein the openingsin the face there- I of, for display of the address, etc., are cQv;
ered by patches of transparent material} sealed thereon to prevent access to the entents of the envelops through said openings.
The mechanism hereinafter described is a rranged to apply adhesive material dire'ctlv upon the transparent material after the lat ter has been cut 'or otherwise formed in individual patches, each adapted to cover a single envelop opening; each of said patches the gumm1ngopera-- being carried, during tion, by a roll having means holding the, patch thereon. As hereinafter described, such holding means includes gripping mechanism which engages the edge of the patch before it is gummed and releases it after its forward edge is caught upon'the envelop web by the'adhesi-ve carried by the patch I My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified and claimed. 1
In the drawings; Figure I is a diagrammatic, vertical, sectional view of rotary mechanism for contemporaneously progressingand punching an envelop web, progressing a web of transparent material, cutting pieces therefrom to form individual patches, providing said patches with adhesive, and applying said adhesive patches in registry with the openings in said envelop web.

In making envelops from a continuous web, by the mechanism shown in Fig. I, the primarily imprforateweb -1 may be progressed relatively. to the punching mechaelevation of an envelop from a blank such as shown 1n n sm comprising the rolls 2 and 3, shown in Figs. I and II, respectively provided with the male die 5 and female die 6, and punched therewith to form successive openings 8 therein as shown in Fig. IV; said openings being in such spaced relation as to appear in respective individual blanks l0, subsequently divided from said web 1, as indicated in Fig. IV. Said web may be con-. veniently progressed by frictional engagement thereof between the rolls 12 and 13 which are relatively spring'pressed toward each other.
The patches 14 are formed from the transparent web 15 which is-progressed contemporane'ously with said web 1, but at a slower rate, by and between the pair of feed rolls which is the same size as rolls 12, and 13, and, therefore, progresses thepatch at the same rate as envelop web 1. :Roll 25 has a pair of gripper levers26- carried by the shaft 27 having an arm provided with the 16 and 17 to guides 23, whereby said web roller 28 for cotiperation withthe stationary cam 29, whereby the outer ends of said grippers are moved toward and away from the circumferential face of said roll 25 to' alternately grip the forward edges of the' patches thereon and release them. Said shaft 27 may be spring pressed either to engage or to disengage the patch, in opposition to the action of a cam, but, with the'JllO cam 29, isspring pressed to disengage the patch. Each of said patches is thus carried'on sai dj platen roll 25 in opposition to the gumming roll 31 which carr es the type form 32 adapted to make imprints of adhesive material such asindicated at 34: in
Figs. IV and V. Said type form 32 receives a coating of the adhesive material 36' from the transfer roller 37 which is in operative .relation with the coating roller 39,
which dips into a supply of said adhesive material in the tank 40. The roll42, extending above the envelop web 1, as shown,
presses the latter toward the platen roll 25 so that as the latter turns' it, presents the patch 14 in position to be caught upon the envelop web by the adhesive carried by the patch and the gripping mechanism aforesaid is arranged to release the patch as soon as its forward edge is thus caught, so that it will be carried forward bythe movement of the envelop web and pressed upon the latter between said rolls 25 and 42.
Although the form of my invention shown in Fig. I is adapted to apply the patches 14 upon the envelop web in registry with openings which extend transversely with respect .to said web; it is to be understood! thatsimilar mechanism may be employed to apply such patches to cover successive openings extending longitudinally in the envelop web 46 as shown in Fig.
V, from which individual blanks 47 are subsequently severed as indicated in that figure.

VI, and the blanks 47 shown in Fig. V be folded to form envelops 50 as shown in .Fig. VII.
Therefore,'I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be -made therein without departing from the essential features ofmy invention as defined in the appended claims.

Mechanism for making open face en-' velops, including means arranged to continually progress an envelop web at a uniform rate while forming a series of openings therein; means arranged-to continually progress a web of transparent material, means 2. Mechanism for making open face envelops, including means arrangedtocontmuously progress an envelop web having openings therein; means arranged to continuously progress a web of transparent materlal; means arranged to cut from said transparent web pieces adapted to fornrrespective individual patches to .cover the openings in said envelop web; means ar releases it only after it has been'caught at fits forward end upon said envelop web by the adhesive on said'patch.

Mechanlsm for makmg open face envelops,1nc1ud1ng means arranged to continuously progress an envelop web having openings therein; means arranged to continuously progress a web of transparent material; means arranged to cut from said transparent Web pieces adapted to form respective individual patches tocover the openings in said envelop web; means arranged to provide each of said severed individual patches with an imprint of' adhesive material; including a gumming roll and a platen roll opposed to said gumming roll, and in engagement with said envelop web, -which platen roll picks up each patch in succession and carries it while it is being gummed; and a movable gripper and actuating means arranged to cooperate with said gripper, whereby said gripper is moved to alternatively grip said patch, and release it only after it has beencaught at its forward end upon said envelop web by the adhesive on said patch;

carry it while it is being gummed and release 1t only after 1t has been caught at its forward end upon said envelop web by the adhesive on said patch; and means opposed to said platen roll arranged to press said patches on said-envelop web. 1
5. Mechanism for making open face envelops, including means arranged to con tinuously progress Jan envelop web having openings therein; means arranged to con tinuously progress a web of transparent ma terial; means arranged to cut from said transparentweb pieces adapted to form respective individual patches tocover the openings in said envelop web; means arranged to provide each of said severed individual patches with an imprint of adhesive-material; including a gumming roll and a platen roll, which platen roll picks up each patch in succession and carries it while it is being .gummed; a gripper lever and actuating means arranged. to cooperate with said gripper lever, whereby the outer end of said lever is moved toward and away from the circumferential face ofsaid platen roll to alternately grip the edge of a patch and release it; and means opposed to said platen roll arranged to present the envelop web for engagement with the adhesive on said patches, said actuating means being arranged -to release each patch only after it has been caught at its forward end upon saidweb by the adhesive on said patch.

Mechanism for making open face envelops, including means arranged to continuously progress an envelop web having openings therein; means. arranged to continuously progress a web of'transparent ma- .terial; means z arranged to cut from said transparent web pieces adapted to form respective individual patches to cover the openings insaid envelop web; means ar ranged to provide each of said severed individual patches withan imprint of adhesivematerial; inc ding a gumming roll and a platen roll opposed to said gummin roll, which platen roll picks up each patch in succession and carries it while it is being gummed; a gripper lever, a spring pressed rock shaft, carrying said gripper lever, an
arm on said rock shaft, providedwith a roller, a cam arranged to cotiperate with said roller, whereby the outer end of said lever is moved toward the circumferential face of said platen roll to grip the edge of the patch, a roll opposed to said platen roll arranged to present the envelop lweb for engagement with the adhesive on said patches, said cam being so disposeclas to release said gripper after each'pa'tch'has been caught at its forward end uponsaid' envelop web-by the adhesive on said patch.
7 In a machine of the character described, the combination of means for moving envelop material having spaced window openings formed therein, means for successivelyv feeding separated stripsof transparent material, into engagement with the moving envelop material, and g'umming'mechanism ar-- ranged to apply bandsof gum to the successive strips of transparent material .dur-
ing their movementtoward the envelop material and in position to engage and adhere to the envelop material around the window openings. I

In a machine'of the character described, the combination of means for moving a web ofenvelop material, means for cutting a succession ofspaced window openings therein, means for successively feeding separated strips of transparent material into engagement with the moving web of envelop mate- .rial, and gumming mechanism arranged to apply bands of gum to the successive strips of transparent material during their movement toward the web of envelop material and in position to adhere to the web around the window open-ings.
9. In a machine of the character described,
the combination of means for feeding a continuous web of envelop material, means for cutting a successionof spaced window openings therein, means for feeding a continu ous web of transparent material and cutting the same into strip lengths, means for successively moving said strip lengths of transparent material into engagement with the moving web of envelop material, "and gumming mechanism arranged to apply bands of gum to the successive strip lengths of transparent material during their movement toward the web of envelop material.
10. In a machine of the character described, the combination of means for continuously moving a web of envelop material having spaced window openings formed therein, means for feeding a web of transparent material and cutting the same .into
separated strips, a cylinder-adapted to carry successive strips of transparent. material ginto engagement with the moving web of envelop material and press them thereon,
and g'umming mechanism arranged to apply successive separated bands of gum to the strips of transparent'material during their .movement toward the web of envelop material.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of means for moving envelop material having spaced window openings formed therein, means for successively feeding separated strips of transparent material into engagement with the mov- I ing envelop material, and gumming mechacesslve strips of transparent material in position to adhere tothe web around the win dow openings.
13. In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination of means for feeding a COIltlIlllOLIS web of envelop material,
means for cutting a succession of spaced Window openings therein, means for feeding a continuous Web of transparent material and'cutting the same into strip lengths, means for successively moving said strip lengths of transparent material into engagement with the moving web of envelop material, so as finally to cover the Window openings, and gumming mechanism arranged to apply bands of gum to the successive strip lengths of transparent mate-' rialsubsequent to their separation into strip lengths. I

In a machine of vthe character de-' scribed, the combination of means for continuously moving a Web of envelop material having spaced Window openings formed therein, means for feeding a Web of transparent material and cutting'the-same int-o separated strips, a cylinder'adapted to carry successive. strips of transparent material into engagement with the moving web of their separation into, strip lengths.
