To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SARKIS S. YENOVKIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Pasting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for pasting labels and the like upon boxes and other objects, and the objects of my invention are to provide a simple, convenient and economical machine for applying paste to labels to be pasted onto boxes, cases, bottles or such like articles, without soiling the hands of the operator and without blistering or wrinkling the labels, or injuring the gloss on the same. 7
I accomplish these objects by means of the machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view label pasting machine.

Referring to the drawings, K is the easel like frame, preferably of the folding type, on which the tray carrier L, adapted to hold the articles on which it is desired to paste labels, is placed. The tray carrier L is preferably provided on its under side with suitable rollers for ease in moving the filed trays to and from the machine. The uprights of the easel K are provided with grooves is, adapted to receive these rollers, which when in place act as guides to prevent the tray from swinging sidewise.
In the end of the tray I provide a suitable screw eye adapted to engage a hook in the end of the cable M. Cable M passing over a pulley in the top cross bar of the easel K is provided at its other end with a loop to fasten to one of a series of hooks in the frame of the easel, thus providing means for the raising or lowering of the tray so of my parts Specification of Letters Patent.

that the portion of the tray on which the operator .is working may be set at the most convenient height.
At the desired distance from the floor is provided a swinging arm R adapted to carry the paste reservoir or vat and label holder. This paste reservoir and label holder is mounted on a platform or shelf 0, which is pivoted at or near its center to the bracket R enabling the paste reservoir and label holder to be the work which is most convenient for the operator, or it can be turned out of the way when changing trays.
The paste holder is shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3 and consists of a peculiar shaped vat A divided into two compartments. The compartment (6 is a reserve reservoir and has an opening a to permit the paste in the reserve chamber to flow through into the supply chamber Z). This opening is supplied with a suitable sliding cover a to control or shut off the flow. The supply chamber a has an extension 0 which 1 term the consuming chamber 0, the top of this chamber 0 being perforated as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. An opening provided with a suitablesliding cover is provided for ease in cleaning the chambers 12 and c.
The vat A is mounted in the bearings D, D, located upon the shelf 0. X is an axle upon which the vat A is mounted. The axle is pivotally mounted in the bearing D, D so as to allow the axle carrying the vat A to rock, to a limited extent. Then the operator takes the label from the label holder and places it on the perforated surface of the consuming chamber a, the pressure upon the perforated surface of the consuming chamber 0 will tip the vat carrying the semiliquid paste forward so that a limited quantity of the semi-liquid paste will be forced through the perforations in the top of the consuming chamber 0 and when the pressure is removed the springs F, F will draw the vat A backward so that the semi-liquid paste will tend to assume a level lower than the top of the consuming chamberc and nomore paste will be used than desired, that is to say, the surplus paste remaining on the top of the perforations will flow backward into the supply chamber 0. The labels to be pasted are placed upon the label holder E located in front of the chamber B so that the operator located in front of the machine may take the labels,
set at the angle With eel-I one at a time, from the label holder E and by placing them upon the perforations in the surface of the chamber 0 the paste which has been forced through the perforations by gravitation and capillary attraction will be evenly distributed on the label and the operator can then paste the label on the box or on such other articles as desired. The label holder E is provided with adjustable guides c at each end to keep the labels evenly placed and in proper position The adjustable guides e on the label holder E are provided at their forward edge with a small wedge shaped projection W, the object of this projection being to hold the pack of labels in place on the label holder E, but at the same time permitting the sliding off of the top label.
F, F are springs attaching the back of the vat A to the platform C, upon which it is located, to keep the vat A steady in proper position. When the spring 13 is attached to the vat A it will holdthe-vat steady and the paste will remain at the proper depth, and if it is desired the vat A may be slightly tipped backward or forward, allowing more of the paste to flow into or from the chamber c. G is a wedge shaped block extending under the vat A. When it is desired to rock the vat A so as to vary the quantities of the semi-liquid paste located in the chamber 0 the wedge shaped block G can be moved outwardly or inwardly, as may be desired.
- The operation of my pasting machine is as follows: Boxes to be pasted are placed in the tray L, one above the other. The braces or supports hinged on the back of the easel K are adapted to hold the easel inclined at an angle of less than ninety degrees, so that the boxes placed in the tray L will be most convenient for the operator and the lower boxes will not interfere with the labels pasted on the top or upper boxes. Labels are placed upon the label holder E and the supply chamber 6 of the vat A is supplied with the proper amount of paste material and the operator slides the top label from the pack on the label holder and applies the bottom thereof to the perforated surface of the chamber 0 and the paste will be distributed evenly upon the label. Ihe operator takes the label that has been supplied with paste and applies it to the desired box in the tray L upon the easel K. After labels have been applied to the upper boxes the tray L is moved upward so as to bring the boxes lower down within convenient reach of the operator. In this-way the labels can be easily and readily applied with paste without the hands of the operator becoming daubed with the paste, and the labels thus supplied with paste may be suitably pasted on the boxes as desired. If colors are used they may be pasted without the coloring matter being interferred with or disturbed,
and without the hands or fingers of the operator being either discolored or being daubed with paste.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the class described, a chamber adapted to contain semi-liquid paste, a consuming chamber forming an extension on one side of said chamber, the cover of said consuming chamber having perforations therein sufficiently small to restrict the flow of the semi-liquid paste, and means for pivotally mounting said chambers whereby the consuming chamber may be depressed from, and automatically returned to, its normal position. 7 V
2. In a device of the class described, a chamber adapted to contain semi-liquid paste, a consuming chamber forming an extension on one side of said chamber, the
cover of said consuming chamber having perforations therein sufficiently small to restrict the fiow of the semi-liquid paste, a liquid reservoir formed on the side of said chamber away from and above the top of said consuming chamber, a port connecting said reservoir to said chamber, means for closing said port, a shelf located above and back of the perforated portion of the cover of said consuming chamber, and means for pivotally mounting said chambers whereby the consuming chamber may be depressed from, and automatically returned to, its normal position.
3. In a device of the class described, a chamber adapted to. contain semi-liquid paste, a consuming chamber forming an extension on one side of said chamber, the cover of said consuming chamber having perforations therein sufficiently small to restrict the flow of the semi-liquid paste, a reservoir mounted on the side of said chamher away from and above the top of said consuming chamber, a port connecting said reservoir to said chambers, means for closingsaid port, trunnions formed on the sides of said chambers, supports for said trunnions mounted upon a shelf, said shelf adapted to be pivotally mounted convenient to the work.
4. In a device of the class described, a chamber adapted to contain semi-liquid paste, consuming chamber forming an extension on one side of said chamber, the cover of said consuming chamber having perforations therein sufiiciently small to restrict the flow of the semi-liquid paste, a reservoir mounted on the side of said chamher away from and above the top of said consuming chamber, a port connecting said reservoir to said chambers, means for closing said port, trunnions formed on the sides of said chambers, supports for said trun nions mounted upon a supporting shelf, resilient means for holding said consuming chamber in a normal position, adjustable means for changing the normal position of said consuming chamber, and a label holding shelf located above and back of the perforated portion of the cover of said consuming chamber.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a removable work supporting tray adjustably mounted upon a supporting frame, an arm hinged to one side of said supporting frame, a shelf pivotally mounted upon the outer end of said arm, bearings mounted upon said shelf, said bearings adapted to engage trunnions formed on the sides of the paste chambers, a paste chamber, a consuming chamber, forming an extension on one side thereof, perforations in the cover of said consuming chamber, a shelf adapted to hold a pack of labels mounted above said perforated cover, and end pieces adj ustably mounted on said shelf, the front ends of said end pieces provided with a ridge adapted to prevent the pack from sliding off .the shelf while permitting a single label to be slid off the top of the pack, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
