EMIL FREDERICK Bowman, or MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
DnINnIire-rcUNT-AIN.
Application filed June 23, 1919.
' T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMIL F. BowMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Fountains, of which the following is a specificatio'n.
This invention relates to improvements in drinking fountains particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use for poultry, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved simple, compact and efficient apparatus of this character embodying a tank having a discharge outlet for the water and provided with a valve for controlling such outlet, the opening and closing movements of the valve being respectively controlled by the closing and opening operation of the tank.
To the attainment of these end s and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty, in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention and in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the invention showing the parts in one position in full lines and in another position in 'dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view as taken on line 2 2, F ig. l.
ln the drawing the numeral 10 designates an open tank of any desired size and configuration and constructed of any suitable material and is provided with an open trough 11, on the outside thereof, prefer-- ably arranged to entend therearound and may be of any desired depth. rlhe tank is provided with a discharge outlet 12 ad jacent its bottom for delivering the liquid from the tank into the trough. Within the tank and extending along the bottom thereof inwardly from the outlet 12 is al conduit or passage 13 which is closed to the inside of the tank except through a suitable inlet opening 14 and through which inlet the liquid flows into the passage 13 to be delivered into .the trough 11.
A valve designated generally by the numeral 15 is arranged within the tank and is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends as at 16 in any suitable manner such as Speccation of Letters Patent,
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 306,031.
between two ears or bearings 17. The end 18 of the valve is arranged over the inlet opening 14 and is preferably weighted so as to tend normally to close the opening 14 and when the valve is in a closing position the end 19 of the valve will be elevated. Y
An air pipe 20 is also arranged 'within the tank and has communication .at its outlet end 21 with the conduit or passage 13 within the tank. The inlet end 22 of the pipe extends to a point adjacent the top of the tank and above the water level therein.
rThe tank is provided with a cup shaped closure having a top 23 provided with a handle 2/1 and a body 25 which telescopes with the tank 10. The body portion 25 is of such a length that when the closure is in position,l the lower end of the body will engage the end 19 of the valve and shift the valve to open the inlet 141 of the conduit passage 13 to permit the contents of the tank to be delivered through the outlet 21 into the trough 11. `When the closure is removed, the weighted end of the valve will cause the valve to drop and close the inlet lll.
ln use the closure is removed which will permit the one end 18 of the valve to close the opening 14. rThe tank may then be filled and when filledV the inlet end 22 of the air discharge pipe 20 will be above the liquid level. The closure is then placed in position so that its body 25 will telescope with the tank and when the lower end of the body engages the portion 19 of the valve, the valve will be shifted to open the inlet 18. rThe valve will remain in this open position as long as the closure is in position. lianged shoulder 26 may be provided on the closure to rest upon the top edge of the wall of the tank. As the closure is placed in position, the air which has been confined at the top thereof above the liquid will escape through the pipe 20.
The conduit or passage 13 may be of any size and shape but is preferably flat on the top and wider at the end having the inlet 14 than at the outlet end so as to permit of a generous 'size inlet 14k and a support for the valve.
1While the preferred form has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of this invention.

with the closure and extending into thetank to actuate the valve to open the outlet when the closure is in position. i
2. A drinking fountain embodying an open tank having a discharge outlet adj acent its bottom, a valve disposed entirely Within the tank for controlling the outlet,
Va closure for the tank, means connected' with the closure and extending into the tank to actuate thevalve to open the outlet when the closure is in position, and an air outlet also Within the tank leading, from the upper portionof the tank and having communication with the said outlet. v
3. A drinking fountain embodying an open tank having a discharge outlet adjacent its bottom, a trough outside of the tank for receiving the Water therefrom, a valve Within the tank for controlling the outlet, said valve operating to normally close the outlet, and a cover element telescoping with the tank, a portion of the cover element contacting With the valve to shift the latter and hold the same openrivhen the cover element is in position.
4L. A drinking fountain embodying an opentank having a discharge outlet adjacent its bottom, ra troughv outside ofthe tank for receiving the Water therefrom, a valve Within the tank for controlling the outlet, said valve operating to normally close the outlet, a cover element telescoping Withthe tank, a portion of the cover element contacting With the valve to shift the latter and hold the same open when the Cover element is in position, and an air outlet pipe Within the tank and leading from a point adjacent the top of the tank and having communication with' the said outlet.
5. A drinking fountain embodying a tank having an outlet opening adjacent its bottom, a pivotally mounted valve within the tank for controlling the outlet, a closure element telescoping With the'tank, the end of said elementV adapted to 'engage the valve on one side of the pivot to shift the valve to open the outlet as the closure is placed in position, said valve operating automatically to close the outlet When the closure is removed, and an air pipe Within the tank and leading from a point above thel Water level and communicating With the said outlet.
G. A drinking fountain embodying an open tank ,having a discharge outlet adjacent its bottom, a closed conduit extending from the outlet and into the tank at the bottom thereof, said conduit having an inlet opening Within vthe tank, a pivoted valve With-in the tank tending normally to close the said inlet, a portion of the valve extending to the other side of the pivot, a closure for the tank, said closure telescoping with the tank and adapted to engage the said portions of the valvevon the other side ofthe pivot to shift the valve and open the said inlet as the closure is telescoped with the tank, and means for permitting the escape of the air from the tank and adjacent the bottom thereof.V
7. A drinkingy Vfountain embodying an open tank having a discharge outlet adjacent its bottom, a closed conduit extending from the outlet and into the tank at the bottom thereof, said conduit having an rinlet opening Within the tank, a pivoted valve Within` the tank tending normally to close the said inlet, a portion of the valve extending to the other side `of the pivot, a closure for the tank, said closure telescoping With the VVtank and adapted to engage the said portion of the'valve lon the other side of the pivot to shiftthe valve and open the said inlet as the closure is telescoped with the tank, and means for permitting the esf cape of the air from the tank and adjacent ing an air pipe entirely Within the tank and leading from a point above the liquid level of the tank and having communication with the said discharge outlet.
In Witness whereof, I hereimto subscribe my name to this specification.
