Be it known that l, CrrAnLns lil. Brno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of llennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Scale- Levers; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to scale beams and levers, and has for its object to provide an improved knife edge pivot therefor. Generally stated, the invention'consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and deiined in the claims.
So-called scale levers and beams are, in fact, levers of one class or the other a in this specification, they wil be referred to generally as levers.
rEhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a plan View showing a portion of a scale lever equipped with two knife-edge pivots in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. l, some portions being sectioned;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, some parts being in full;
Fig. 4f is a side elevation illustrating somewhat modified means for adjustably positioning the knife edge pivot in the lever; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the parts shown in Fig. e.
rl`he scale lever is indicated by the numeral 6, the same, as shown, having two pivot hubs 7 and 8 to give increased lateral bearing in the knife edge pivots. rlhe knife edge pivots 9 are formed with approximately semi-cylindrical surfaces 9a, with knife edge wedge portions 9b and longitudinal shoulders 9 at the base of the wedge. Preferably, the knife edge of the wedge 9b is parallel to the shoulders 9c and both are at a slight angle in respect to the basal line of the cylindrical surface 9a, so that the pivot is given, in effect, a longitudinal taper.

in the respective hubs 7 and S, or any other suitable portion of Jhe lever, and there will be space between these seats and the shoulders 9C and wedges 9b. Such spaces are filled in with a hard filling material ll which is preferably metal of low fusibility cast into the said space after the knifey edge pivot has been properly positioned. :is shown in Fig, 2, the seats l0 are formed with radial anchor pockets l2 into which portions of the filling material 1l will run to positively anchor such -filling material.
ln Figs. and 5, adjusting screws 13 are screwed through threaded seats in the lever and into engagement with the opposite shoulders 9C. By these screws, a knife edge pivot may be not only tightly seated in its seat l0, but its knife edge may be adjusted toward one or the other end of the lever by oscillation of the pivot. l/Vhen the said screws are used, they will be left in position while the iilling material 1l is being cast into the seat to fill up the space, or, in some instances, the filling material might be dispensed with and the said screws alone relied upon to hold the pivot. llVith these adjusting screws, it is possible to get the most accurate spacing between the edges of two pivots applied, as shown, for example, in Fig. fi. llhe shoulders 9 are therefore, useful in both of the illustrations above given, or even in other arrangements that might be employed. What l claim is:
l. A knife edge scale pivot formed with a cylindrical portion, with a wedge-shaped portion and with shoulders at the base of said wedge shape portion.
2. The combination with a scale lever having a cylindrical pivot seat, of a pivot inserted into said seat, said pivot having a segmental cylindrical surface fitting said seat, having wedged portion that is spaced from said seat and having shoulders at the base of said wedge portion.
8. The combination with a scale lever having a cylindrical pivot seat, oi a pivot inserted into said seat, said pivot having a segmental cylindrical surface fitting said seat, having wedged portion that is spaced from said seat and having shoulders at the hase of said wedge portion, and means applied to said lever within said seat and engaging said shoulders to securely hold said pivot in working position.
Il. The combination with a scale lever having a cylindrical pivot seat7 of a pivot inserted into said seat, said pivot having a segmental cylindrical surface itting said seat, having wedged portion that is spaced from said seat and having shoulders at the base of said wedge portion, and a hard metal cast into the said seat and filling the space between the same and the wedge and shoulders of said pivot.
5. The combination with a scale lever having a cylindrical pivot seat, of a pivot inserted into said seat, said pivot having a segmental cylindrical surface fitting said seat, having wedged portion that is spaced 'from said seat and having shoulders at the hase of said wedge portion, and screws ap` plied to said lever, projecting into said seal', and engaging the shoulders of said pivot.
