This invention has for its object to pro- `vide a lire pot for ranges which will not necessitate a lining of fire brick requiring replacement from time to time and leaking more or less air through the division cracks to interfere with the draft and check the fire and cool off the oven.

Another object of the invention is to produce an airtight fire pot of cast metal construction in a single piece, of oval shape in plan, and adapted to be .dropped into a rabbeted support, and capable of being changed end to end therein.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lire pot of this type with a means for blocking off a portion thereof to reduce the capacity of the lire pot at times when the full capacity is not required, thus economiaing in the consumption of fuel.

`With the above and other vobjects in view the invention consists in the iire pot for ranges as herein claimed and all equivalents.

In these drawings 10 indicates the range proper, having the usual oven 11, with the fire boX 12 at one end thereof and the flue space 13 extending over the top thereof between it and the range top 14.

A supporting plate 15 extends across the fire boX 12 on the level of the top of the oven 11 and tightly closes the top of the fire box from the oven to the end of the range and from the front to the rear of the range except for an oval shaped fire pot opening Specification of Letters Patent.

This fire pot 17 is of the same substantially oval shape as the opening and is supported entirely from the plate 15 `bythe engagement of its upper edge therewith. lt is lthus suspended in place and is ffree to expand and contract without opening up oints or cracks and therefore without disturbing the airtight partition formed by it and itsk support between the fire box andthe flue. The flange of the fire pot 17, by resting on the flange of the supporting plate 15 with surrounding play, forms a tight joint therewith which will soon become packed with soot and dust to make it impossible for air to enter the flue around the fire pot and to compel the air to pass through the fire bed within the fire pot. rlhe leweredge of the fire pot is preferably serrated to form spaced fingers 18 cooperating with the grate bars 19 therebeneath as usual to permit free access of air to the fire bed and to facilitate the removal of ashes and clinkers.

By means of the fire pot of a single piece cast metal construction suspended at its upper edge there is no crack or seam to open up whether the fire pot-is hot or cold and therefore there is no check upon the draft but all air is compelled to pass through the fire bed. lVith such a fire pot suspended at its upper edge and entirely free otherwise, it is capable of expanding and contracting under varying temperatures without warping or losing its orginal oval shape. The oval shape is given to the lire pot to permit it to expand and contract as an arch and to avoid binding in its seat. Being of an integral casting suspended at its upper edge, it is surrounded by open space and does not require a fire brick lining. Fire pots with sectional fire brick lining are subject to frequent repairs in replacing the fire brick as they burn out, but they are more particularly objectionable because of the cracks or seams between the sections of lire brick lining opening up and permitting air to enter the fire pot above the bed of coals, and thus interfering with the draft and cooling off the oven.

The lire pot of this invention can be reversed end to end if desired, and this without requiring the services of a stove expert, for the lire pot merely rests on the ledge of the supporting plate 15 and may be lifted from place and returned without ditliculty. This also permits of repairs being made by obtaining a new fire box from the manufacturer and slipping it in the place of the old one when it has become broken or is otherwise unsuitable for further use. This feature is of great importance with ranges in use in country districts where it is difficult and expensive to obtain the services of a stove expert for making repairs.

'Ihe curved side walls and the flat top of the lire pot of this invention make it possible to provide a blocking device having a tight lit therewith for effectively blocking off a part of the fire pot when it is not desired'to use the fire pot to its full capacity. F or this purpose the blocking device shown in Fig. is used, consisting of a vertical partition plate forming a part of the same casting with a horizontal top plate 2l.

The vertical plate has its edges curved to correspond with the curvature of the interior of the fire pot so as to just fit therewith when the device is in position and is then forced toward the end of the fire pot as would be the result of the pressure of coal thereagainst. The top plate rests flat upon the upper edge of the lire pot and is free to slide thereon to permit of the movement of the vertical plate 20 necessary to effect its tight it. Thus the pressure of the coal against the vertical partition 2Q and the Weight of the blocking device together serve to make the blocking device tightly seal a portion of the ire pot and prevent the leakage of air therethrough while the fire is confined to the open portion of the lire pot with a resulting economy in fuel in the operation of the range at times when the full capacity of the fire pot is not required.

The invention is not confined to any particular form of stove and there is no 1ntention to impose such a limitation by the use of the term range for the term crange7 as herein employed is intended to cover cook stoves generally.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a range, the combination, with an oven and a firebox atthe end thereof, of a supporting plate resting on the oven and extending across the fire box and fitting Lesmo/i tightly the walls thereof and provided with an oval shaped opening, an oval shaped bot-y tomless basket-like lire pot provided with an outwardly extending flange at its upper edge resting upon the supporting plate around the edges of the opening with play permitting expansion of the lire pot, said fire pot being changeable end for end within the opening of the supporting plate, a blocking device for the fire box comprising a vertical plate connected with a horizontal plate, the horizontal plate being slidably mounted on the upper edges of the re pot to permit the vertical plate wedging itself between the converging side walls ofthe fire pot at either end thereof as the horizontal plate is moved endward of the lire pot.

In a range, the combination, with a lire box, of a supportingk plate extending over the lire box and having an ovel shaped opening, an oval shaped bottomless basket-like lire pot having an outwardly extending flange at its upper edge resting upon the supporting plate adjacent the opening and being reversible end for end therein, a blocking device adapted to coperate with either end of the tire pot having a top section slidable upon the upper edge of the fire pot and a vertical section movable into contact with the lconverging side Walls of the re pot at either end on endward movement of the top section.

3. The combination of a fire pot having side walls converging toward the end, a blocking device having an imperforate top portion slidable upon the upper edge of the lire pot and an imperforate vertical portion integral with said tcp portion and movable into close iitting contact with the converging walls of the lire pot on endward movement of the top portion, said blocking device coperating with the side walls and upper edge of the lire pot to prevent passage of air through that portion of the fire pot covered by said device.
