RUFUS CHANDLER, OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,757, dated December 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS CHANDLER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented. certain Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to an adjustable lifting device for the pressurefoot of sewingmachines; its object being to raise the pressurefoot automaticallyto a certain yet variable point while the needle is in the work and release it again before the needle leaves the work, so as to enable the operator the better to turn corners and curves without changing the length of stitch, the material being easily turned while the machine is rnnnin g, turning always on the needle as its center, thereby leaving no chance for the cloth to slip under the point of the needle and make uneven stitches, which is of great importance in making ornamental work or making designs from patterns.
My improvement may be readily attached to any sewing-machine having either the top or under feed, and is constructed as follows,
reference being had to the drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- A is a lever, attached to the machine by a stud, B, which serves as its fulcrum. A cam, U, is placed upon the main shaft H, and communicates motion to theleverAso as to cause it to raise the pressure-bar D, to which it is connected by the slotted piece E, which forms part of the lever, and is for the purpose of adjustingt-he length of the lever A so as to give greater or less motion to the pressure-bar, thereby raising the pressure-foot higher or lower, as may be desired by the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the adjustable lever A- E, the stud B, and cam 0, when combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
I RUFUS CHANDLER. Witnesses:
