Description

L. N. BIGELOW.
Grain-Drill.
. No. 13,373. 4 Patented July 31, I855.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUGIAN N. BIGELOW', OF CUBA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEEDlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13,373, dated July 31, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUGIAN N. BIGELOW, of Cuba, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Sowing all Kinds of Grain Broadcast; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, which is a perspective view of the machine, having a part of the hopper and screen removed, so as to show clearly its other parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a screen attached to a carriage and acted upon by trip-hammers set in motion by its wheels, and so arranged with hopper slides and set-screws that any given quantity of grain from (one to five bushels) can be sown broadcast on an acre of sloping and uneven as well as level land.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe its construction and, operation.
I construct acarriage, in the rear of theplatform A A of which I suspend, by means of the cranes B B and the bails O (J, a screen, D D, which is divided into compartments, as shown in the drawing, to prevent the grain from collecting at one point. Over the screen, by
means of the blocks E E, I fix a hopper, F F, having an aperture, G, running the whole length of its bottom, and by means of the slide H, placed under the hopper, and the rod I, which can be shifted in the notches K K K on the standard J, raised from the platform of the carriage, I am enabled to regulate the quantity of grain I wish to fall into the screen, or confine it entirely in the hopper. Under the screen I arrange another slide, L, and by means of the rod M, passing under the platform and connecting with the standard N, which can be shifted in the notches O O, I regulate the quantity of grain to be sown to the acre and also confine the grain in the screen.
To prevent the grain from clogging in the screen or hopper, and to scatter it properly, I arrange trip-hammers P P to strike on the side of the screen, turning on fulcrums Q Q, attached to the platform and tripped by means of the square blocks RR, attached to the hubs of the wheels; and in order to prevent the screen from swinging out of the reach of the hammers I attach irons (one of them shown at T) to the end of the platform and pass them through the screen. By means of nuts and screws on the ends of these irons the screen can be clamped at any particular point.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of a screen for the purpose of sowing grain broadcast, so arranged with a feeding-hopper and slides as to regulate the quantity of grain to be sown, when acted upon by trip-hammers to secure its uniform and proper distribution, in the manner set forth.
L. N. BIGELOW.
