ALEX ZAWADA, 0F REMBRANDT, MANITOBA, CANADA.
DROP-HAMMER.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALEX ZAWADA, a citizen of Ruthenia, residing at Rembrandt, Province of Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drop-lammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of a drop hammer adapted to be pedally operated and in which the tup or hammer element is adjustable in a novel manner with relation to the anvil or die -block.
This and other objects are attained by the novel construction. and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming amateria part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is vertical sectional vi w taken through a hammer made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is top plan iew thereof, and
l? 3 is a per ective view showing the sliding tup or hammer element.
Referring to the drawings in detaihthe numeral l0 indicates the base or" the harm mer from which rises a column 11, having an extending vert"-=l guide portion 12, at its side, the same being in alinernent with an undercut t insverse recess 14:, formed in the a vil element 15, immediately above base d'which contains a slide carrying a die 17.
Mounted to turn freely on a pin 18, set in a recess 19., in the lower portion of the base, is lever 20, having a curved forward projecting portion 21 adapted to receive the foot oi the operator, the lever having upon its upper sir-" ace a lug 22, in which is se cu ed the lower end or a cable 23, passing over l pulley mounted upon a pin set tr nsverse. in an open recess 2o, 1 f U 1 iorineo. in ht ll, exteds s, the i' to the rim a pulley 28, mounted on a spindle 29, passing transversely through the opening 27 the top of the column 11.
Also secured upon the spindle 29 is another, sh pulley 30, to the rim of which is attached one end of the heavier cable 31, en ged at its lower end in a rec- D-UU u u tangular bar 32 slidably engaged 1n an ned centrally in the elon ated o'eenino t3 1 .Lp r: 4- Q upper end or a sl tup U3, having 1ongitudinal Vshaped elements 3e upon its op- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed Jun 18, 1919. Serial No. 305,046.
posits sides suited to be received in "J-SllElPSCl grooves 35, formed in the front portion 12 of the column, the same being machined so that the slides of the tup 34: will move freely therein.
Formed transversely through the bar 2-32 are a plurality of rectangular openings 36, receptive of a square pin 37, passing through the tup near its upper end and at right angles to the slide elements 34. This square pin passes outward through a slot 3!", formed in the column 12, whereby it is provided with an operating head 38 by which it my be withdrawn.
In order to hold the square pin 37 against accidental displacement, a flat spring 39 is held by rivets 40 to the tup 3-3, and is arranged to exert frictional pressure against the extending lower surface of the pin 37, whereby it is held in any desired adjust ment.
Extending downward from the tup is usual form of punch holder ell, provided with a screw 42, for securing the punches therein.
ln operation, the parts having been assembled in the position as indicated, and the operator accustomed to a certain movement of the treadle or lever 21 in operating the hammer, should it be desired to ex ert a relatively light blow, the square bar 32 is adjusted so that the movement transmitted throu h the le 'er and cable actuates the tup a relative small amount only, while on the contrary, if it be desired to deliver a heavier blow, the bar 32 is inserted to a greater length within the tup so that the latter is caused to move through a greater of action upon an equivalent movement of the lever 21.
Having thus described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a drop hammer, the combination with the frame thereof, a tread lever pivoted in the lower portion of said frame, a cable connected therewith, a spindle mounted transversely to said frame at the upper end thereof, pulleys engaged on said spindle, said cable being secured to one of said pulleys, another cable engaged with the other of said pulleys, a tup slidably mounted in said frame, said cable being engaged with said tup, of means for adjusting the movement communicated to said tup by said pedal lever.
2. In a drop hammer, the combination With a base, a column rising therefrom, and a pair of pulleys journaled in the upper portion of said column; of a foot lever journaled in said base, flexible connections between said foot lever and (meet said pulleys, a tup slidable in said column, said tup having a rectangular axial opening in the upper end, a bar slidably engaged in the opening of said tup, means for adjusting said bar Within said tup, and flexible conneetions between said bar and the other pulley.
In a drop hammer the combination with a frame, a spindle in said frame, pullevs en a ed on said s indle a treadle and a tup slidably arranged therein, of a bar adapted to slide in said trip, said bar having transverse openings, a pin passing through; i said tup and openlngs into said bar Where-- In testimony whereof E have atfixed my signature.
