Specification of Letters Patent. Patented ADI. 20, 1920.
Application filed August 11, 1919. Serial No. 316,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE a citizen of the United States, and resident of Danvers, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Toys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and the object thereof is to provide a toy having eyes presenting a luminous appearance. More specifically the object of the invention is to provide a toy in the form of a living being having eyes comprising a luminescent material which will enable said eyes to be visible in the dark so that the toy may be given to children with the assurance that it will watch over them during their sleep.
I am aware that heretofore the faces of advertising devices, automatons and the like have been provided with eyes illuminated by incandescent lamps but such forms of illuminated eyes cannot readily be applied to small toys for young children.
I am also aware that various luminescent materials have been applied to the faces of watches, clocks and various other objects in order to make them visible in the dark and I do not therefore claim broadly the appliproduction of a .toy,' suchas a doll or other simulation of a living being, for'example, a dog, cat, bear, etc, having luminescent eyes which toy may be taken tobed with the child and which the latter may be assured-Will watch,- over it durin-gthe night, thereby allaying the fears of darkness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a doll or other object of the character specified having a soft and pliable body which may be handled by the child in the night as well as the day time without danger GARRIGUE;
of injury to the child and which will be proance.
Other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a conventional illustration of a doll, and,
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a suitable form of eye adapted to be applied to a doll or other toy, and,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a preferred form of eye.
The toyillustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a doll having a body 1, legs 2, arms 3, and a head l, having eyes 5 secured to said head by any suitable means.
The eyes may be in the form of disks preferably having a curved outer surface and a flat or curved back surface, one of said surfaces being provided with a layer or coating of luminescent material, said layer or coating being applied either directly to the material forming the eye or to a setting which supportsthe eye and by means of which it may be attached to the head of the doll or other toy.
As illustrated in the preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein the eye comprises a centraldark portion 6 corresponding to the pupil ofthe natural eye, surrounded by a luminous band 7 produced by a layer or coating comprising a luminescent material preferably a radium composition which will retain its luminescent property for a long time, and corresponding to the iris of the eye.
Preferably the eyes are formed of a body portion 8 presenting a convex outer surface which may be coated with a luminescent composition. The eyes preferably are made of transparent material to produce the effect of a lens, the luminescent material being applied to the back surface of said lens.
The eye comprises a hemispherical body portion 8 having aflat back surface sup ported in a suitable setting such as a disk 9 having a circumferential flange 1O engaging over the edge of the hemispherical body portion 8 of the eye, a layer of luminescent composition 12 being applied cithcr as a coating to the back side of the'body portion of the eye or contained in a setting 9 in the form of a disk or preferably a ring surrounding the central dark spot. The
setting may be provided with any suitable means for attaching it to the head of the doll or other device. A convenient means comprises shanks 14, 15 which are secured at one end to the disk 9 and adapted to be inserted through the outer wall of the head and bent laterally into the position illustrated in dotted lines thereby holding the eye in position. It will however, be understood that any suitablemeans may be provided for securing the eye to the toy. A preferred form of eye is illustrated inFig. 3 which comprises a body 15 of transparent material having a curved preferably substantially hemispherical surface 16 and a concavedly curved rear surface 17 provided with a central cavity 18 presenting a surface of greater concavity than the surface 17,
the layer or coating 19 of luminescentmaterial being applied to the surface 17 while a coating or layer of dark material 2O is applied to the central concavity 18.
By such construction the coatings of dark and luminescent material can be readily located and applied so that the eyes will have a uniform appearance. The eye may be mounted in a setting similar to that illus-' trated in Fig. 2 comprising a disk 21 having a circumferentlal annular flange 22 and shank 23, 24 for securing the eye to the head of the toy.
toy may be formed in any suitable manner,
as by embroider-ing, painting, or stenciling. It will however be understood that my inventlon 1s not confined to the use of a luminous eye with a doll or toy of the spe cific character illustrated but may be em ployed in dolls having china and composition heads and which are provided either with stationary or movable eyes, and that various modifications in construction and form of the toy may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention, the object of which is broadly to providea toy having eyes comprising a luminescent material of a suitable character to enable the child to be assured of the presence of an overseeing My invention particularly contemplates avoiding the use of any luminous means which comprises a device, the luminosity of which is dependent upon incandescence since in the latter case the heat of the incandescent would be likely to cause fire and would be wholly unadapted for the purpose specified.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. A toy formed in simulation of a living being and having eyes provided withtransparent surfaces and ,7 comprising a central dark portion corresponding to the pupil and a surrounding portion corresponding to the irisof the natural eye, comprising. luminescent material.
2. A toy comprising a bodyand head of flexible material stuffed with soft pliable material, said head being provided with eyes having transparent surfaces and precomprising luminescent material.
3. An eye for toys and the like, comprising a transparent front .surface and pre-.
senting a dark portion corresponding to the pupll and a surrounding P01131011 corresponding to the iris of the natural eye, said sur:
rounding portions comprising luminescent material.
4. An eye for toys and the like comprising a transparent body portion presenting a curved front'surface simulating the lens of an eye and a back surface, said back surface being provided with a layer of luminescent material. 7
5. An eye for toys and the like comprising a transparent body portion presenting a curved front surface simulating the lens of an eye and a back surface, said back surface being providedwith a central dark portionsurrounded by an annular layer of luminescent material.
- 6. An eye for toys and the like comprising a transparent body portion presenting a curved front surface and a curved back surface, a setting. for said eye having attaching means and a layer of'lumlnescent' material intermediate ofsaid back surface and said setting.
7 An eye for toys and the like comprising a transparent body portion presenting a convexedly curved front surface and a concavedly curvedback surface having a central depression of greater concavity, a coating of dark material in said central depression and a surrounding annular layer of luminescent material.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FLORENCE GARRIGUE.
