FRANK L. FOR-WARD, OF NYILCK, NEW YGBK, ASIGNOR TO UNIVERSAL PLANER GOMPANY, INC., A CORIPORATION 0F DELAWARE.
PORTABLE 1 111 3.? IN G-MAGHINE.
Application filed. March 14, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, FRANK L. Fowano, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nyack, in the county of Rockland and of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in l ortable Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in planing machines and it is the principal obj ect of the invention to provide a novel roary planing machine so constructed as to permit its use for planing plane or curved surfaces in rapid and effectual manner, the machine being portable and exceedingly light and compactly constructed, thus, ren dering the same desirable for use in connection with various grades of work.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide the machine with a form of flexible base which can be varied in shape to accord with the contour of the surface to be planed thereby.
@ther objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangement and combinations of the parts of the machine, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all
of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to this specification and which form an essential part of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine having parts shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail partly in section showing the mounting of the rotary planing knives,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail showing the connection between the screw threaded shanks and the flexible base, and
Fig. i is a horizontal section then through.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection withv which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the frame of the improved machine, the opposite ends of which are apertured and. receive screw threaded bushings 2 therein, through which pivotal screw threaded shanks 3 are passed, these shanks, as will be noted, being pivotally Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 222,357.
connected as at at to the flexible base 5 of the machine, which base is formed with a suitable opening for permitting the rotary knives of the machine to be engaged with a surface being planed thereby. Handle pieces or knobs 6 are engaged with the upper portions of the several screw threaded bushings 2 by means of screws or similar fastening devices and as will be noted are provided with vertical bores alining with the screw threaded openings formed in their respective bushings Obviously, these knobs serve means for facilitating rotation of too bushings 2 and as a consequence, vertical adjustment or' the same a; d the adjacent ends of the flexible base 5 with rela tion to the opposite ends of the frame 1.
A hollow casting indicated in its entirety by the numeral 8 is secured to the inner side of the flexible base 5 at a point in proximity to the knife receiving opening formed therein and as will be noted, is provided.
with cradles 9, on which the lower portion of the casing of a motor designated by the numeral 10 rests; said motor, being arranged in a suitable seat formed in the frame 1 and secured to said frame by means of set screws 11 or similar fastening devices which are passed through segmented flanges formed on the adjacent marginal portions of the frame. 7
Mounted in the lower portion of a hollow casting S are the rotary planing knives .4, the same, obviously, being arranged on a transversely disposed shaft 13 having its opposite ends journaled in suitable bearings former. in an adjustable sub-frame l2 which as will be noted, is secured to the flexible base 5 by a spring metal strip 13, the free end of ti e frame being engaged by adjusting screws 14-. One of the ends of the shaft 13 is extended and has a gear 14 fixedly mounted thereon which gear meshes with an idler 15 also mounted on suitable bearings arranged in the casting 8, and being of a size greater than the gear 14. The adjacent end of the rotatable armature shaft of the motor is provided with a gear 16 which normally meshes with the idler gear 15, thus permitting the transmission of rotary motion to the planing knives 12 when the motor is energized. It is of course to be understood, that suitable conductors are extended into engagement with the contact terminals of the motor and are in turn,
connected to a source of supply, whereby the necessary electrical energy may be conducted to the motor. Further, if desired, a switch 17 of any desired type may be arranged on the motor and interposed in certain of the electrical conductors as indicated at 21 whereby to control the closing of the circuit through the coils of said motor.
A curved oil tube 18 is secured to the casting 8 adjacent one of the cradles 9 thereof and has its lower end communicating with the bearings of the gear 14, while the upper end is extended to a convenient point whereat oil may be introduced thereinto. The motor too, is provided with a suitable form of grease cup 19, which is adapted to feed lubricant to the bearing surfaces of the same,
thus, insuring proper functioning of the same at all times. 7
To facilitate the handling of the machine, that is, the moving of the same over a surface to be planed, a handle 20 may be and preferably is secured to the rear portion of the frame 1 in a suitable manner.
In operation, the flexible base 5 is adjusted to conform to the contour of a surface to be planed by the machine, whereupon the switch 17 is closed, thus starting the motor 10 and permitting the transmission of rotary motion by way of the various gears to the rotatable cutting knives 12. The machine is now moved over the surface to be planed thereby. Obviously, by adjusting the flexiblebase 5 by means of the knobs 6 and screw threaded bushings 2 which are secured thereto, said base may be varied in shape to conform to either plane or curved surfaces and as a consequence, the machine may be adapted for use in connection with different kinds or grades of work.
I of course desire to have it understood that different forms of gearing other than that shown, as well as the different type of cutting knives may be employed, should it become necessary, in order that the machine may properly perform its operation; further, that the specific form of drive means or motor may be varied, such as conditions or preference may dictate; that is, the machine, should it be desired, may be driven by an air motor or like mechanism.
As hereinbefore indicated, 1 do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to the )articular embodiment chosen for illustration herein, nor to the exact construction, arrangement and adaption of parts shown and d scribed, but I reserve the right tomake any changes and alterations that fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
' I claim:
An apparatus for planing curved surface which comprises in combination a main frame and motor mounted therein, a flext ble base strip attached to said main frame and means for adjusting the same to it the curvature of the surface to be planed, said base having a transverse slot through which the cutting knives may operate, a rotary cutter geared to the motor, and a sub frame in which said cutter is jonrnaled, a spring metal strip fastened near one edge to the main frame and near the other edge to one end of the sub frame so as to form a hinge support for the latter, and a screw mounted in the main frame and forming an adjustable support for the other end of the sub frame.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
FRANK L. FOR-VVARD.
