Be it known that I, WI'LLIAM ELIJAH ELLIo'I'r,-a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michi an, have invented certain new and useful mentsin Mounts for Nails or the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.

This invention relates to mounts for nails, tacks, or the like, and it is an important object of the invention to provide 'a mount such that a large number of articles may be mounted in predetermined relation in a small space, retained on the mount against accidental displacement, and yet be readily removedwhen desired for use.

The nails, for example, which are to be attached to the mounting strip are constructed with a shank 1 and a head 2. In the illustrated embodiment, these nails are attached to a long, narrow and thin strip of iiexible material, preferably, paper, and are located side by side and as closely adj acent each other as is possible. The strip comprises a middle part 3 at each side of which are projections or-ribs 4. and 5 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the rib 4c being formed by lbending the paper on lines a and c and the latter on the lines e, g and m indicated in Fig. 2 so that below the projection 5 a comparatively wide extension 6 is left on the strip. At the opposite'side of the strip a plurality of tongues 7 areformed by cutting inwardly the slots 8 which are mprovei llocated at' an acute angleto the edges of the strip and substantially parallel to the intended direction of insertion of the nails. The Shanks of the nails or tacks are forced through the projections 4 and 5 and are located with reference to the outer edge e of the section 6 so as to make ali-acute ang turned up over` theheads of the nails and preferably are formed into substantially U- shaped members as indicated in Fig. 3, makmg a guard for the heads of the nails to retain them against accidental displacement from the mount, the outer portions of the tongues 7 coming over the heads ofthe nails,

one tongue being provided for each nail or tack.

The construction for mounting nails or,

tacks as thus disclosed permits the'` mounting of a large number of nails or tacks in a continuous row and at the same time the long extension 6 below the ends of the Shanks 1 affordsl a surface which may be grasped by any suitable mechanism for withdrawing the mount from the nails or tacks, the heads of the said'articles being held or engaged in any suitable manner as the strip is withdrawn therefrom. Furthermore, the division of the guard into a plurality of tongues 7 assists the coiling of the strip into a 'compact package. It is contemplated that a strip of indefinite length thus wound and having a large number of nails or tacks thereon may be used in automatic nailing machines and that the heads may be engaged in any suitable raceway while the extension at-6 may be grasped by any suitable mechanismv to assist 'the separation of the paper strip and the nails or tacks.

Each nail or tack as it is withdrawn will aiiect only its section of the mount since each tongue 7 will bend outwardly as the corresponding nail or tack is withdrawn.

In combination, an elongated mounting strip havingspaced apart upstandingprojections formed lengthwise of the strip, a plurality. of articles each having a shank and head, said Shanks passing through the projections and vlocated at an acute angle thereto with adjacent heads'of said articles partially overlapping, and an extension to the mount at each side ofthe strip, one of said extensions formed as a flat section projecting a distance beyond the ends of the Shanks, and the other formed into a. U shaped portion to receive and partially cover the heads of the articles and serving to retain them on the strip against displacement.

a plurality of articles each having a shank and a head attached to the strip bypassing the Shanks through said projections, at an acute angle thereto and with the heads of adjacent articles partially overlapping, and

an extension at one vside of the strip adjacent the heads formed into a substantially U-shaped portion to receive and partially cover the heads, Said extension being cut at a plurality of points to form individualI U-shaped tongues receiving and partially covering each head.

6. In combination, a mounting strip, a plurality of articles having shanks and heads disposed across the face of the strip at an acute angle to the length of said strip, and means for securing the articles to the strip.

In combination, an elongated mounting strip having spaced longitudinal ribs, and a plurality of articles havin shanks and heads, said Shanks being passer through the ribs and located at acute angles thereto, said strip at one edge being turned up ovei' the heads of the articles to resist their 'removal from the strip.

In combination, an elongated mounting strip having spaced projections extending lengthwise of said strip, and a plurality 'of articles having shanks and heads, said Shanks passing through the projections and being located at acute angles thereto and with the heads of the adjacent articles partially overlapping, said mount at oneedge being turned up to cover the heads of the articles and resist their removal from the mounting strip.

11. `In combination, an elongated mounting strip having spaced upstanding projections extending lengthwise of the strip, a plurality of articles-each comprised of a shank and head, said Shanks passing through `the projections and located at acute angles thereto, and means formed on the mounting strip to resist the withdrawal of said articles from the strip. 12. In combination, an elongated mountmg strip, a plurality of articles having Shanks and heads disposed across the face of the strip at acute angles to the length of said strip, and means for securing the articles vto the strip, said strip near one side thereof being-turned up over the heads of the articles vand being cut to form individual tongues adjacent to each head.
