To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. ALLEN, of thecity and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Presses; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to an improvement in flat bed cylinder printing presses, in which the impression-cylinder is raised clear of the printing form to permit the reciproeating type-bed to make its return movement and is lowered to its printing position when the type-bed starts upon its forward movement.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a press of this character with an impression-cylinder normally connected with the power, and means for automatically disconnecting said impression-cylinder from the power when a sheet of paper fails to be delivered to said cylinder, and means for automatically connecting said cylinder with the power when a sheet of paper is delivered to said cylinder. To these ends the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the claims. In describing the invention in detail, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of one end of a flat bed printing press with my novel invention attached thereto.

Referring to the c rawings, the impressioncylinder 1 has its right end journaled in a two-part journal-box comprising an upper part 2 and a lower part 3 secured together by bolts passing through the upper part 2 and threaded into the lower part 3. Said ournal-box is mounted to slide in suitable guldeways formed in the upper end of the upright i on the side frame 5 of the press. Said journal-box is arranged to be reciprocated upon the guide-ways in the upright l and is normally held in raised position by the spring 5. The journal-box is moved to its lower position by means of an eccentric mounted upon the shaft 6.
Said shaft 6 is oscillated by means of an arm 7 which has one end secured thereto, and the other end pivotally connected with the upper end of twopart connecting rod 8, the parts of which are united by having their ends oppositely threaded and mounted in an adjusting sleeve 9. The lower end of said two-part connecting rod 8 is pivoted to one end of a bell-crank lever 10 which is pivotally mounted upon a stud 11. The other end of said bell crank lever 10 is pivotally secured at 12 to the outer end of a flat bar 13 loosely mounted in a strap 14- projecting from the underside of an actuating bar 15 adjacent the free end thereof.
Pivotally connected at one end to the underside of the actuating bar 15 is a latch 16, the free end of which normally rests in a longitudinally extending groove 17 formed in the upper face of the bar 13. Said latch 16 is provided upon its underside adjacent its free end with a slot 16 and shoulder 18 which normally engages thefree end of the bar 13, as shown in Fig. 3.
The forward end of the actuating bar 15 is pivotally connected with the upper end of a cam-lever 19 swinging on a pivot 20 in the frame of the press and carrying a camroller 21 arranged to travel in a cam-groove 22 in the ca1n-wheel 28, which is mounted upon the cam-shaft Q-i of the press, and which makes one complete revolution for two revolutions of the impression-cylinder. The impression-cylinder l and the camshaft 24: may be driven in any approved manner, as for instance, by the devices shown in United States Patent, No. 725,714.
Slidably mounted in a bracket secured upon the upright a is an actuating-rod 26.
' 26 is pivotally secured to one end of a lever-arm 34; pivoted at 35, and provided with an upwardly extending fixed pin 36 and a downwardly extending fixed pin 37. A spring 38 is secured at one end to the free end of the pin 37 and at the other end to the frame of the press. Mounted in the frame of the press above the upright 41 is a cam-shaft 39 having a revolving cam-wheel 40 mounted thereon. A bell-crank lever 41 is pivoted to the frame of the press and has the end 42 bearing against the cam-wheel 410 and the laterally bent end 13 underlying the arm 27, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7.
The operation of the device is as follows :With the parts in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the feelenfinger 32 is in raised position above the inner edge of the inclined table 33, and the arm 27 rests upon the laterally'bent end 13 of the bell-crank lever 11 and out of contact with the upper free end of the actuating rod 26. The pin 36 rests against the inner free end i of the flat bar 13 and the latch 16 is latched in engagement with said free end of the bar 13. With the parts in this position, it will be seen that the operation of the camwheel 23 will operate the actuating bar 15 and the flat bar 13 with which it is latched in engagement through the latch 16, so as to operate the bell-crank lever 10, connecting rod 8 and arm 7 to oscillate the shaft 6 and lower the impression-cylinder against the action of the spring 5.
With the part in this position, as the cam 40 revolves in the direction of the arrow, the end 42 of the bellcrank lever 41 will move off of the high portion of the cam and permit the arm 27 to drop upon the upper free end of the actuating rod 26, thereby moving said actuating rod down wardly a sufficient distance to move the finger 36 to the left and raise the latch 16 out of engagement with the end of the bar 13 as shown in Fig. 1. This movement of the arm 27 likewise rocks the shaft 28 and permits the feeler-finger 32 to be lowered upon the inclined table 33 or upon a sheet of paper resting upon said table for the purpose of being presented to the impression-cylinder.
'If a sheet of paper has not been introduced upon the inclined table 33 beneath the feeler-finger 32, said feeler-finger will not be moved upon its pivot and the finger 36 will remain in the position "shown in Fig. 4, so that no further movement of the actuating rod 26 or the finger 36 will be effected, and as the cam-wheel 23 operates the actuating-bar 15, the latch 16 will enter the slot 17 and travel along said slot without effecting any movement of the bar 13, and thus without operating the shaft 6 to lower the impression-cylinder upon the type.
If, however, the sheet of paper is engaged by the gripping jaws and moved toward the impression-cylinder, the feeler-finger 32 will be moved upon its pivot and permit the arm 30 and arm 27 to be lowered still further, and to such an extent as to move the finger 36 farther to the left, so that it will register with the opening 16 in the bottom of the latch-bar 16 and permit the free end of said latch-bar to drop down so that the shoulder 18 will engage the free end of the bar 13, as shown in Fig.
5. \Vith the parts in'this position, it will be seen that the movement of the actuating bar 15 through the cam-wheel 23 will operate the bar 13 and its connections with the shaft 6, so as to lower the impression-cylinder upon the type and effect the printing of the sheet of paper. a
As the actuating bar 15 is returned to its normal position, the finger 36 will be withdrawn from the opening 16 in the latch 16 and as soon as withdrawn the spring 38 will rotate the arm 34 to raise the actuating rod 26until the stop collar 26 engages the underside of the bracket 25 and the finger 36 rests against the inner end of the bar 13. It will be seen that as the latch 16 is withdrawn from the slot 17, its free end will drop down so that the shoulder 18 is free to engage the end of the bar 13, as shown in Fig. 3.
With the above construction, it will be seen that the impression-cylinder is automatically held in its raised position when no sheet of paper moves toward the impression-cylinder, and that an automatic tripping mechanism is provided for automatically connecting and disconnecting said impressioncylinder from the main driving shaft. It will be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown, as various changes in the details of construction may be made without departing" from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims. 7
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a printing-press, the combination with the impression-cylinder and the feedtable of means interposed between said impressioncylinder and the cam shaft for raising and lowering said impression-cylinder, means for disconnecting said impression-cylinder from said cam shaft and means actuated by the movement of a sheet of paper onto said impression-cylinder for connecting the same with the cam shaft.
2. In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder normally connected with the cam shaft, of means for automatically disconnecting said cylinder from the cam shaft and automatically reconnecting the same with the cam shaft when a sheet of paper is delivered thereon.
3. In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder, of a latchmechanism normally connecting said cylinder with the cam shaft, means for automatically moving said latch to disconnect said cylinder from the cam shaft, and means for moving said latch to reconnect said cylinder with the cam shaft.

In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder and the feedtable, of a latch-mechanism adapted to connect and disconnect said impression-cylinder from the cam shaft, and a feeler-finger arranged and adapted to be brought into ongagement with the feed-table and control and operate said latch-mechanism.
5. In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder and mecha nism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a flat bar, an actuating bar and a latch-bar, of a feed-table, a feelerfinger arranged to engage and disengage said feed-table, and latch-operating mechanism arranged to be operated by the operation of said feeler-finger.
6. In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a fiat bar, an actuating bar and a latch-bar, of a feed-table, a feelerfinger normally out of engagement with said feed-table, means for bringing said feeler-finger into engagement with said feed-table, and means for operating said latch-bar when said feeler-finger is brought into engagement with said feed-table.
7. In a printing-press, the combination, with the impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a flat bar, an actuating bar having a sliding connection with said flat bar, and a latch pivoted on said actuating bar and arranged to engage said flat bar to cause said bars to be operated together and to permit the actuating bar to be operated without operating the fiat bar, of means for operating said latch.
8. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a flat bar, an actuating bar having a sliding connection with said fiat bar, means for reciprocating said actuating bar, and alatch pivoted on said actuating bar and arranged to engage said flat bar to cause the same to be operated in one direction by the actuating bar and to permit the operation of said actuating bar without operating the flat bar, of means for operating said latch.
9. In a printing-press, the combination with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a flat bar having a groove therein, an actuating bar slidably connected to said fiat bar, means for reciprocating said actuating bar, and a latch-bar pivoted to said actuating bar and arranged to be operated to normally engage the end of said flat bar, of means for automatically operating said latch-bar to disengage the end of said-flat bar and to position it to enter the groove in said flat ba 10. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a flat bar having a groove therein, an actuating bar slidably connected to said flat bar, means for reciprocating said actuating bar, a latch bar pivoted to said actuating bar and normally engaging the free end of said fiat bar, of an actuating rod provided with means for operating said latchbar, and a feeler-finger arranged and adapted to operate said actuating rod.
11. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a latch-bar for disconnecting said lowering mechanism from the cam shaft, of means for operating said latch-bar which comprises an actuating rod, a rock-shaft provided with an arm adapted to engage said actuating rod, and a feeler-finger, and means for rocking said rock-shaft.
12. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism iiicludes a latch-bar for connecting and dis.- connecting said cylinder from the cam shaft, of a feed-table, an actuating rod provided with means for engaging said latch bar, a rock-shaft provided with means for engaging and operating said actuating rod, and with a pivoted feeler-finger arranged to engage and disengage said feed-table, and means for operating said rock-shaft.
13. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a latch-bar, of a feed-table, a reciprocating actuating rod provided at one end *ith means for engaging said latch-bar, a rock-shaft provided with an arm adapted to engage and disengage the other end of said actuating rod, and with an arm extending from said rock-shaft over said feed-table and provided at its free end with a pivoted feeler-finger arranged to engage and disengage said feed-table, and means for rocking said rock-shaft.
14. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a latch-bar, of a feed-table, an actuating rod provided at one end with means for engaging said latch-bar, a spring for operating said actuating rod in one direction, a rock-shaft provided with means for operating said actuating rod in the opposite direct-ion, an arm slidably mounted upon said rock-shaft and provided with a pivoted feeler-finger arranged to engage and disengage said feed-table, and a rotary cam for operating said rock-shaft.
15. In a printing-press, the combination, with an impression-cylinder and mechanism for lowering the same, which mechanism includes a fiat bar having a longitudinal groove in the top thereof, an actuating bar slidably connected to said flat bar, means for reciprocating said actuating bar, a latch-bar pivoted upon the under side of said actuating bar, and provided with a slot in the bottom thereof, and having its free end normally engaging the free end of said flat bar, of a feed table, an actuating rod, a lever-arm pivoted to the lower end of said actuatingrod, a pin secured to said lever-arm having its free end resting upon the bottom of said latch-bar and adapted to be brought into engagement with the slot therein, a second pin upon said lever-arm, a spring connecting the free end of said second pin with the frame of the machine and adapted to normally hold said actuating rod in its raised position, means for limiting the movement of said actuating rod to its raised position, a rock-shaft provided with an arm overlying the upper end of said actuating rod, .a bell-crank-lever having one end supporting said arm, and the opposite end resting upon a rotary cam, a feeler-finger-arm slidably mounted upon said rock-shaft and'having its free end extending above said feed-table, and a feelerfinger pivotally mounted in said free end of said feeler-finger-arm.
