Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM` F. MCORARY, OF BAKER COUNTY, OREGON. I
- IMPROVEMENT vIN REGISTERED-PACKAGE ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,212, dated December 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. F. MCCRARY, of
l Baker county, Oregon, have invented an Imenvelope, constructed and arranged as fully shown by the drawing herewith submitted. Figure 1 shows the pattern of the envelope before it is folded.
The flaps numbered 1 and 8 are nearly the same as in the old one now in use, being a tri# ile wider. The flap or tuck numbered 2 is the same as in the old one. `The ap numbered 4y in Fig. 1 is new, being cut with square end and gummed, as indicated by the shading in Fig. 1, and when folded together, as shown in Fig. 2, forms the pocket. The circular cut in the edge of the pocket, being in position where the thumb and ringer are naturally placed in taking hold of the envelope to read its address, enables the postmaster to readily remove and replace the receipt, as required by the Postmaster-General. The edge of the pocket, as fully shown in the drawing, is cut a litt-le shorterthan the end of the envelope, for the purpose of protecting the-pocket against the action of other packages in the mail with it.
My invention is intended as an improvement upon my registered-package envelope which was patented April 30, 1872, as well as upon the envelope now adopted by the Postmaster- General and in use by the government.
The advantage that my improved envelope has over the one now in use is the pocket 1n the Vend for the receipt. heretofore and now in luse have no convenient way of attaching these receipts, and the consequence is that they are tied on with twine, or stuck to the envelope with gum or other devices, all of which have proved to be insnl'icient, and they cause postmasters and others handling them unnecessary time and trouble in taking off and putting on these receipts while changing the mail at way-offices where there is no time to spare. rllhey are frequently detaohed from the package and lost. PMy invention is designed to remedy these evils as Well as to relieve postmasters, 4and to operate for the better security of this class of mail matter.
The envelope having the external receiptpocket 5, constructed substantially'as shown and described.
y WILLIAM F. MCCRARY. Witnesses:
