Description

F. P. SULLIVAN.
GUN CLEANER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, I918.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
UNITED srarps PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. SULLIVAN, OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
GUN-CLEANER.
Application filed June 18, 1918.
To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. SULLIVAR, a citizen of the l nited States, residing at Belvidere. in the county of Boone, State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaners; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for one of its objects to provide an impro ed device by means of which the bores of shot guns and rifles may be thoroughly cleaned by thrusting the device into the bore and simultaneously rotating the same.
Another object to provide a cleaner of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea. involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which. for the purpose of illustrating the invention, shown in the accompanying drawing wherein: v
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. is a transverse section on the line of Fig. 1.
l 4: is a detailed perspective view of the attaching loop to which the cleaning cloth is secured.
The drawing illustrates what is now be lieved to be the preferred form of the inven tion which comprises a rod made of any suitable material nd rectangular in cr -:.1 section and said rod is spirally twisted throughout its entire length and provided upon one end thereof with a knob or handle 6 in which the end of the rod, is rotatably mounted. The other end of the rod re duced and screw threaded at 7 for receivin the threaded socket 8 of a loop member 9 to which a cleaning cloth adapted to he connected when the rod 5 is inserted into tli barrel of a gun.
A plug 10 is associated with the rod 5 and made of any suitable material such as hard wood and is preferably of a tapered or frusto-conical formation whereby the smaller Specification of Letters Patent.

SeriaI No. 240,603.
end thereof may be fitted into barrels of different sizes previous to thrusting the rod with the cleaning cloth thereon into the outer end of the bore. The plug 10 is pro vided with a longitudinal opening 11 through which the rod 5 extends loosely and secured to the outer end of said plug is a metallic plate 12 having a central squared opening 13 for receiving the rod 5. Hence this plate becomes in etfect a nut, and when the rod is forced inwardly and longitudinally of the bore of the gun the same will at thesaine time, be given a rotary movement in order to twist the cleaning cloth and thereby thoroughly wipe the bore.
The invention further contemplates the provision of means for securely maintairn ing the plug 10 in position in the outer end of the bore of the gun while the same is being cleaned and this means preferably comprises a holding strap ll having its ends secured to the plug whereby to form a loop through which the thumb of the hand of the operator which is employed to grasp the barrel of the gun is extended. In this manner a downward pull will be exerted upon the plug while the rod 5 being reciprocated within the bore of the gun and this pull will be sufficient to securely maintain the smaller end of the plug in engagement in said bore while the cleaning operation is in progress. The loop 1% may also be utilized for withdrawing the plug from the bore after the cleaning operation by exerting an outward pull thereupon.
What is claimed is I-- The herein described gun cleaner comprising a threaded rod, a knob swiveled on its upper end, a loop carried at its lower end to receive a clea-i'iing cloth, a tubular plug whose bore loosely surrounds the rod and whose exterior is tapered downwardly to lit gun barrels of different sizes, a plate car ried by the plug and having a threaded opening engaging said rod, and a strap connected at its ends with the upper end of the plug and having a looped center for the operators thumb.
.l'n testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK P. SULLIVAN.
lVitnesses THOMAS S. BEOKINGTON, T. B. LUHMAN.
