REVOLVING CHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.8, 1917.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
@Houuug UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVE FISHER, OI 'I'IIPTON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IO JOHN A. MAYNE, OF
KOKOMO, INDIANA.
REVOLVING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 8, 1917. Serial No. 185,087.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVE FISHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Tipton, in the county of Tipton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to chairs and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a revolving chair designed so as to permit the same to be used for various purposes, such as-a desk chair, dining chair, etc., and having the seat thereof rotatably mounted and arranged upon anti-frictional bearing means, whereby to reduce friction.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a chair of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efliciency of operation high.
7 Other objects will be in art obvious and in part pointed out hereina ter.
The foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved chair;
Fig.2 is a fragmentary detail in section taken through the seat and a portion of the base thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the raceway for the anti-frictional bearing means.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings and in connectlon with w ich like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
1 designates the base or, support of the chair in its entirety, the same comprisin a plurality of spaced le s interconnecte by the usual rungs, where y the same will be efliciently braced. A top member is arranged upon the upper ends of the spaced legs and has fixedly arranged thereover a casting 2,
the said casting having an anti-frictional bearlng raceway 3 formed upon the upper slde thereof adjacent its outer marginal edge. concentrically of the casting 2, which s of circular shape, there is formed a bearmg element 4, the pu ose of which will be presently apparent, w ich bearing element has an opening formed therethrough, this opening correspondin with openings formed 1n the casting and t e top portion of the base 1.
A seat 5 is provided and has a back rest 6 secured thereto, while to the under side of the same a second casting 7 is secured through the medium of screws 8 or like fastening devices. An annular raceway 9, corresponding to the raceway 3 as formed upon the under side of the casting 7, while arranged concentrically thereof and corre-- sponding to the bearing element 4 is a second bearing element 10, the same being provided with an opening, this opening almlng with other openings formed in the casting and in the seat 5, the openings in the seat being countersunk to allow the head of a bolt or spindle 11 to lie flush with the surface of the seat.
Ball bearings 12 are arranged between the raceways 3 and 9 and obviously serve as means for reducing friction upon the revolving of the chair seat 5 thereover.
o secure the seat 5 in position uponthe base 1, the bolt 11 is passed through the opening formed in the lower casting 2 and the top portion of the said base and has its lower end screw threaded whereb a suitable looking nut may be turned into engagement therewith. A suitable covering 5 is secured to the top of the seat 5 whereby the head of the bolt 11 is concealed and is prevented from coming into contact with the clothing of the occupant of the chair.
From the foregoing, it will be readily understood that with my improved chair, I provide an article of furniture which may be readily usedfor ofiice purposes, in cafs or restaurants, homes and numerous places of which I do not mention. The chair seat due toits anti-frictional mounting may be readily swung or revolved to permit a person to rise or seat thereon. V
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of. my
invention. I claim 4 A device of the character described comprising com lemental disks haying annular ways forme on their adjacent sides, a leg carried to member supporting the lower disk, antiriction bearings arranged in said ways, a chair seat upon the upper disk, a back for the chair directly in line W1th the anti frictional bearings, relatively small centrally located bearing elements formed integral with the adjacent sides of the disks havin their ad acent portions engaged where y to brace the central portions of said disks to prevent fracturing of the same incident to stress applied thereto, said antifriction bearings being disposed under the marginal portions of the seat directly in line with the legs, and connecting means assing through openings formed in said earin elements.
n testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto. I
OLIVE FISHER.
