Be it known that ;I, JOHN ROWLAND Brown, a citizen of the United-States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Bonds, of which the following is a' specificaand which is simple and durable in construction, effective in operation, and which 2O will give high electrical efliciency.
Anothero ject of this invention is to produce a rail bond adapted to be welded to the surface of rails and provided with a plurality of surfaces, adapted to recelve the attaching metal, disposed in angular relation with respect to each other.
Afurther object of the invention is to produce a bond that can be applied to the surface of rails in various positions and having terminal members of a higher meltin point than the body portion thereof.
To the attainment of these ends and the accbmplishment of other new and useful objects,as will appear, the invention conm'sts in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully do scribed and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating the embodiment of the invention and in which:-

Referring to the drawings in which similar referencefcharacters indicate like parts in the different views, 1-1 designate portions of two adjacent rails of an electric railway shown as electrically connected by a bond embodying the principle of my invention and consisting of a flexible body member 2, usually composed of a plurality of strands of copper, having securely attached to each end thereof a terminal member 3, the bond being attached to the rails by means of an attaching metal 4, and the application of heat.
The terminal member 3 of the present invention is .composed of ferrous metal which is particularly adapted to this type of bond and is preferably formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the sides 5-5 thereof projecting a greater distance from the surface of the body member than the remaining side, the upper end surfaces of which provide a shelf for receiving the attachin metal 4. The exposed side portion 7 of-the body member is adapted to receive the attaching metal when the bond is applied to the rails as shown in dotted lines, or the body member thereof resting in a horizontal position. While I have shown the bond attached to the base of the rails in this position, it will be obvious that it is equally adaptable to be applied to the ball of the rails in a similar position.
Figs. 6 and 7 show a modified form-of my invention disclosed in Figs. 3. and 4 in that the terminal member has the opposite side compressed into converging contact with the body of the bond thus more tightly compressing and compacting the members of the bond body together.
Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 are views of another form of the invention which consists in forming the terminal member 3 up out of a comparatively thin piece of sheet metal.-
The terminal comprises the shelf 10, produced by folding the metal upon itself, the bond being squeezed to such a degree as to press the parts of the fold tightlytogether, as indicated at 11, Fig. 8, thus eliminating all, space between the upper and lower parts of the fold. Flanges 12 and 13, are formed out of the respective parts of the fold and are adapted to contact with the surface of the body member 2, the flange 13 being provided with projecting ends 14 which engage the exposed side surface 7 of the body member and are adapted to maintain the terminal member 3 in looking engagement with the body member 2 and which provide vided with a projecting also for spacing the body member ffom the rail in order to facilitate the operation of Welding as before stated.
Having fully described my invention and shown several forms embodying the same, I do not wish to be limited to the details of the construction shown, since these can be obviously changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim 1. A rail bond comprising a bond body composed of copper, and a terminal member composed of ferrous metal, the terminal partially encircling the bond body and comprising a shelf having aflange provided with inwardly extending 'rojections adapted to engage the unencirclbd portion of the bond body for the purpose of securing the terminal and body together, the shelf being formed by folding. the metal upon itself in such a manner as to eliminate all space between the parts of the fold.
2. A rail bond comprising-a bond body and a terminal member, one face of the body being exposed, the terminal member proportion to receive and support an attaching metal and having a transverse slot in one face to receive the bond body and having means'to engage the exposed face of the bond body to secure the body and terminal together.
3. A rail bond comprising a bond body and a terminal member, one face of the bond body being exposed, the terminal member provided with a projecting portion intermediate its ends to receive and support an attaching metal and having a transverse slot in one face to receive the bond body and having means to engage the exposed face of the body to secure the body and terminal together.
