Be it known that I, BENnDnT'ro TAMBU- RELLO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Means for Demountable Rims, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in fastening means for demountable rims, one of the objects being to provide a device that will obviate the necessity for the use of bolts or screws to secure a demountable rim to a wheel. When bolts or screws are employed to secure demountable rims to a wheel trouble is at times experienced due to rust, especially if a considerable period of time has elapsed since said screws or bolts were removed. Rust will have no ill effects on my improved fastening device, as will appear from the following description, which will also make clear `the structural advantages thereof.
I will now describe my invention in detail and finally claim the features thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a wheel provided with my improved fastening device;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the fastener members;
Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a modified form of fastener, the section being taken on a line 5-5 in Fig. 7;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, the section being taken on a line 6-6 in Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a side view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 5.
As herein embodied, the fastening device is made up of a box-like support 8 arranged to pivotally support a locking-member in the form of a lever 9 pivoted, as at 10, in the support 8. As can be seen the lever is pivotally connected adjacent its end 11 which projects above the top surface of the support or box 8 and arranged to engage a locking-plate 12 carried by the demountable rim 13. The plate 12 is provided with an opening l2FL therethrough which opening, when the plate is secured to the rim 13, forms a. pocket to receive the end or nose 11 of the lever 9, as can be seen in Fig. 3. It will also be seen that when the lever 9 is in locked position the nose l1 willl be out of alinement with the pivot point of said lever to an extent that will enable the weight upon the rim to maintain said lever in the locked position. To move the lever out of locked position, the arm la thereof will be moved in the direction of the arrow 15 in Fig. 3, thereby causing the nose ll to move in direction of arrow 15. When nose 11 is moved as stated, the rim 13 will be slightly sprung` or flexed to allow said nose to be moved into unlocked position as indicated by dotted lines F ig. 3, at which time said nose will be depressed sufficiently to permit the rim to be removed. It will be understood that each lever 9 will be manipulated in the above mentioned manner in order to unlock the rim. In this instance I have illustrated four levers.
To facilitate the movement of the levers I preferably recess the rim as at 17, Figs. 2 and 3, as the rim 13 will not spring to any great extent, but will, however, spring to an extent that will lock the levers when said levers are in position to lock the rim. It will be evident that the rim cannot be removed when the levers are in locked position, as the nose 11 will be entirely surrounded by the walls of the spring l2,
To prevent the rim from creeping I provide the support or box-member 8 with lugs or stops 18 between which the plate l2 is located. As will be seen the support or box 3 will he inserted in an opening 19 in the felly 20 of the wheel.
If desirable the locking device may consist of a pivoted tongue 21 (Figs. 5 and 7) carried by a support or b ox 22 inserted in the felly of the wheel. In this instance the pivot will consist of a square rod 23 passing through bushing 24. The rod 23 passes entirely through felly 25 and one end thereof is arranged to receive a socket wrench, by means of which the tongue 21 will be provided with a tail-piece or stops 26 to bear against the felly when the tongue is in locking position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of awheel, a demountable rim, supporting members carried by the Wheel and passing through the telly thereof, said supporting members having an opening therethrough, a lever pivotallyT mounted in each of said openings, one end of each lever projecting through said opening and terminating in a handle, the opposite end of said levers being arranged to engage said rim, plates carried by the rim having an opening to engage the adjacent end of each lever, and lugs carried by the lever-supporting members to engage said plates.
2. The combination of a Wheel, a demountable rim, a plurality of locking devices pivoted to the Wheel and arranged to engage and spring said rim While said devices are being moved from unlocked to locked position, said devices being adapted to be maintained in locked position by said rim, and coperating locking members carried by the rim, said rim being provided With recesses located in radial aline-,ment with the pivotal point of each locking device for the pur pose set forth.
