VIBRATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. Prcxor,
` a citizen of the United States residing in 'in free communication with the source of air, thereby imparting to the pattern board, to which the vibrator'is `attached, the vibration necessary to freethe pattern properl from the mold.
gne of the objects of the present inven. tion is to provide a very elicient vibratory device which can be readily and inexpensively manufactured. `More particularly my object is to provide a vibrator of which the body portion is cut from a commercial rolled bar or rod, for example, a hexagonal steel bar, and wherein most ofthe operations incident to the manufacture of the `vibrator body from such rod or bar can be carried out by automatic machinery. Thus a large number of my improved vibrators may be produced in a relatively short time and at a very low cost.
I also aim to improve the general construction and operation of devices of the class to which the invention relates.
1With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features, steps and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described andv claimed.

In the Yform shown the vibrator has a body 10, constructed from al lenghbf hexagonal bar, preferably of steel. nis body 1O 1s provided with a `cylindrical bore 11, which is closed at the ends by plugs or caps 12, 13 respectively, and forms a cylinder in whlch an elongated piston or plunger 14 is adapted to reciprocate. It will be observed that in the Iform illustrated the cylinder 11 1s eccentrically located with respect to the hexagonal body 10,-so that the wall 10 at one side of the cylinder is considerably thinner than the wall 1011 at the opposite slde; and the thicker cylinder wall 10b-is used as a sort of air chest in which the air? passages for connecting the cylinder with the source of compressed air are formed. The air chest 10b is of less length than the vibrator body 10 owing to the fact that the ends of the latter are reduced and formed as cylindrical extensions 15 in line' with the cylinder 11. The cap 12 is screwed into a threaded socket in one of the extensions 15 and the cap 13 is screwed into a threadedV socket in the other cylinder extension, the caps being preferably interchangeable.
Preferably the caps 12, 13 are cut from bar stock (in the case illustrated a hexagonal bar of somewhat less diameter than the body 10), and the cap or plug 13 has its head out away at one side to form a notch- 16, adapted to seat on the edge of the pattern board 17, in the manner shown. At the opposite side of the head of the plug 13 a smaller notch 18, is formed which serves as a seat for a nut 19. A bolt 20, having a screwhead 21, is passed through a hole 22, cut in the pattern board, and an alined hole 23, passing transversely through the head of the plug 13 and communicating with the respective notches 16, 18. This bolt 20, engages the nut 19, and as the latter is prevented from turning by engaging the side wall of the notch 18, the turning of the bolt will tightly clamp the cap 13, and the vibrator asa whole to the pattern board. By this construction the vibrator can be very conveniently applied to the pattern board by the use of a minimum number of parts.
The portion 1()b of the vibrator body is provided with a central screw threaded inlet 24, to receive the threaded end of a pipe or litting in communication with the pressure source (not shown). Passages 25, 26 lead from the port 24 y(at points adjacent the bottom of'said port or pocket) to ports 27, 28, in the cylinder wall, and these latter ports areadapted to communicate by means of annular grooves, 29, 30 on the piston 14,
with ports 31,32. The ports 31, 32 enable air to pass out of the cylinder ducts or passages 33, 34 respectively which communicate with ports 35, 36 at the respective ends of the cylinder 11. The piston 14 is provided with end stops 14, 14b which are so formed as to prevent the ends of the cylinder from being closed ofl", and a spring 14c acts on the piston in such a manner as to normally hold the latter against one end of the cylinder. Near the respective ends of the cylinder a plurality of exhaust ports 37, 38 are cut in the thin wall 10a. I
The normal position of the piston is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Supposing now that air is admitted tothe port or inlet socket 24, it will pass through duct 26, port 28, groove 30, port 32, duct 34 and port 36 to the right-hand end of the cylinder so as to act on the right-hand head of the piston and throw the latter to the left in opposition to the spring 14. When this opera-- tion takes place the duct 25, is cut off because a solid portion of the piston is located over the port 27. However, when the piston moves to the left the port 27, is opened as soon as the groove 29, comes into line with it and communication is then established through port 3l, duct 33 and port 35 with the left-hand end of the cylinder so that the piston is again thrust to the right. The 'exhaust takes place through the ports 37, 38 in the usual manner, and a rapid vibration is kept up until the air su ply is cut off. The spring 14c normally ho ds the piston in such a position that it will begin to vibrate at once. The piston is reversible and the spring 14c may be used at either end of the cylinder.
In manufacturing an improved vibrator of the type shown, I take a hexagonal bar preferably of steel and at suitable points ycut it down to form the reduced cylindrical extensions or portions 15. Preferably a number of the vibrators will be made at once and the eccentric cylindrical portions formed by turning will be twice the width of the portion 15, so .that by cutting ofl" the bar at the centers of the several cylindrical portions a plurality of vibrator bodies 10 with rounded end extensions 15, will be formed. Each vibrator body is then bored out to form the cylinder 11, and the ends of the cylinder are tapped for the reception of the caps or plugs 12, 13. The socket 24, is drilled and tapped in the portion 10b of the body and the ducts 25, 26, 33, 34 are formed by drilling the part 10b from the respective ends. The drill holes are on a slant so that While the drill may be set against the narrow end face of the part 10b it` will reach the bottom of the socket 24, whereby the passages 25, 26 will not be cut 'off by the connecting pipe or its equivalent from the shoulders to a sufficient extent to secure it firmly in place. The several ports in the cylinder wall are formed-by drilling the walls 10, l0b transversely, and in the part 10b thel drilled holes for .both ports and ducts are partially plugged up in such a manner as to provide the described passages or communications, as indicated by vthe dotted lines in Fig. 3. v
The vibrator body is of such form that it can be evenly tempered without diiiiculty, and prefer to harden the vibrator in this manner. The device can be very accurately constructed so as to be economical in consu'mption of air and powerful in action. Furthermore my improved vibrator While very serviceable and durable, can be produced at very low cost by the use of commercial bar stock and of the automatic machinery to which such stock is well adapted.
I do not claim herein the method of making the improved vibrator, as claimed in my application, Serial No. 138,210, filed December 21, 1916.
What I claim is:
1. In a vibrator, the combination of a body of substantially` uniform polygonal cross section throughout the greater part of its length having a plurality of pairs, of parallel faces, said body constructed of a bar of metal and cut away at the ends to present reduced portions of less diameter than the main part of the body and eccentric to such main part, said body having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough substantially concentric with said reduced ends but eccentric to the main polygonal part of the body whereby the wall at one side of said polygonal part is thicker than at the opposite side, the thicker part of said wall being provided withan intermediate -inlet' socket and with a plurality of inlet passages extending longitudinally from said socket toward the respective ends of the body but communicating withl said longitudinal bore just short of the reduced end portions, said longitudinal assages beingI drilled ormed adjacent said reduced end portions and plugged at the ends, there being exhaust passages in the thinner wall of the bore, a piston in said bore, said reduced end portions being provided with interior screw threads, and screw plugs engaging said threads and having outer polygonal heads.
2. In a vibrator or'similar tool,.the combination of a body constructed from a metal bar of polygonal cross-section having a lurality of pairs of parallel faces exten ing throughout the greater part of its length and provided with an eccentric longitudinal bore extending from end to end, whereby the wall at one side of the bodyv is thicker .than at the opposite side, said body also havlng reduced end portions presenting shoulders, the polygonal portion being provided at one of its faces and` in the thicker portion of the wall of said bore with an inlet socket bored in said face and provided with interior screw threads, there being longitudinal inlet passages leading from said inlet socket toward the respective ends of the body but communicating with said bore short of said shoulders, said inletpassages being drilled from said shoulders and slanted inwardlyso' as to communicate with said inlet socket adjacent the bottom thereof, the outer ends of said inlet passages 'being suitably plugged, a piston operating in said bore, -and closure members engaging the respective ends of the body, the thinner portion of the wall of the bore being provided with suitable exhaust passages.
3. In a vibrator or similar tool, the combination of a body of substantially uniform cross-section throughout its length, having an eccentric longitudinal bore, whereby the wall at one side of the bore is thicker than at the opposite side, said body being provided at the intermediate part and in the thicker portion of the bore wall with an inlet socket having its rim or mouth flush with the exterior surface of the body, there being longitudinal inlet passages leadingv from said socket toward the respective ends of the body at the thicker side thereof but commu'- nicating with said bore short of the body ends, said inlet passages being .slanted inward so as to communicate with said inlet socket adjacent the bottom thereof, a piston operating in said bore, and detachable members closing the body at the respective ends.
4. In a vibrator, the -combination of a body constructed from a metal bar of polygonal cross-section, said body having a plurality of pairs of parallel faces extending throughout at least the major portion of its length, there being relatively short reduced portions at the ends of the body creating shoulders, said body having a longitudinal bore extending therethrough from end to end and being provided in one of its faces with an intermediate inlet socket and with a plurality of inlet passages extending longitudinally from said sockettoward the relspective ends of ,the body but communicating with said longitudinal bore just short of the reduced ends of the body, said longitudinal 'passages being drilled from the above mentioned shoulders .and plu ged at the ends, a piston in said bore, an closure members closing` said body at the ends.
5. In a vibrator, the combination of a body constructed from a metal bar of uniform cross-section, having a bore extending eccentrically therethrough from end to end, whereby the wall at one side of the bore is thicker than at the opposite side, said body also having reduced end portions presenting shoulders, the intermedlate portion being provided at its` side face and in the thicker portion of the body wall with an inlet socket sunk therein and havin its rim or mouth flush with the side face o the body, there being longitudinal inlet passages leading from said socket toward the respective ends of the body but communicating with said bore short of said. shoulders, said longitudinal passages being drilled from the shoulders and plugged at the outer ends, a piston in said bore, and closure members for the respective ends of the body, the thinner portion of the body wall being provided with suitable exhaust passages.
6. In a vibrator, a body constructed from a metal bar of polygonal cross-section substantially throughout its length having a bore extending eccentrically therethrough -from end to end, whereby the wall at one side of the bore is thicker than at the opposite side, the intermediate portion of the body beingprovided at one of its side faces and in the thicker portion of the bore wail with an inlet socket sunk therein and havin its rim vor mouth flush with the aforesai side face of the body, there being longitudinal. ,inlet passages leading from the bottom portion of said socket toward the respective ends of the body but communicating with said bore short of said ends, said longitudinal inlet passages being drilled `from the end portions of the body and plugged up at their outer ends, and closure members having threaded engagement with the espective ends ofthe body and rovided with outwardly disposed manip ating heads.
