Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER S. Go- LANKE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention pertains to new and useful improvements in copy or manuscript holders for typists, and is particularly designed for use in connection with typewriting, recording and adding and subtracting machines.
It is the principal object'of this invention to provide a device of this character for quick and easy mounting upon standard writing machines without disassociation of any of the parts thereof.
A further object is to provide means for readily adjusting the backing plate or platen with respect to both vertical and horizontal positioning.
It is also an object to provide the platen with an easily adjusted, simply constructed line indicator.
A. still further object is to provide an adjustable retaining member for co6peration with said platen.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of partswhich will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of a copy-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, said holder being mounted upon the supporting portions of a writing machine of standard construction.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the holder being shown in slight perspective.
Fig. 3 is an end elevntional View of the supporting portions of a standard writingmachine, the improved copy-holder mounted thereon being in perspective.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the plane of the line 44 of Fig. 1.

The type of machine with which the invention is preferably used and on which it is shown mounted in the accompanying drawings, is a combined writing, book recording and adding and subtracting machine of standard design. The parts of such machine which come into consideration in the application of the invention are the rear carriage supporting bar A having rearwardly projecting feet B, an attaching post C carried by one of the feet, a register bar standard D supporting a register bar E for detachable adding and subtracting registers, and means for detachably securing the standard D to the post 0. These parts are preferably connected by means of a pair of screws 1 which project through openings in the standard D into threaded sockets in the post C.
My invention is adapted to be secured upon the machine with which it is to be used by said screws 1 or similar screws having shanks longer than those necessary to connect the standard and post. In other words I provide a bracket 2 and secure the same by said screws 1, either to the standard D and post C, or directly to the latter. It will be appreciated that the invention may be used when the writing machine is used as an adding and subtracting machine, or as a simple writing and recording machine upon removal of the register bar and its support, in the form of the standard D.
The bracket 2 is provided with a vertically positioned sleeve 3 through which a supporting bar 4 is designed to slide, said bar being held in adjusted positions by means of a set screw 5. The upper end portion of the bar t'is disposed above the register bar E and receives the backing plate or platen 6 forming the main portion of the copy-holder. The supporting bar 4. is axially twisted as at 7 and the part thereof above the twist is bent rearwardly. The platen is thus disposed at an angle to the plane of direction of travel of the machine carriage (not shown) and is inclined rearwardly.
In addition to the vertical adjustment of the platen through the instrumentality of the set screw 5, the same is also capable of horizontal shifting by being provided with a plurality of sockets for receiving the upper end of the supporting bar 4.
From Figs. 1, 3 and 4. it willbe seen that each of the sockets referred to consists of a pair of alined vertically spaced straps 8, the upper one of which has a lip 9 extending toward the platen to limit the movement of the supporting bar through the openings formed by the straps and the rear face of the platen.
The copy or manuscript disposed against the platen 6 is supported upon a ledge 10 that projects forwardly from the lower edge thereof as is customary in devices of this character. Said copy or the like is tightly clamped against the platen by means of a spring retaining arm 11, one end of which is secured in any preferred manner to said platen and adjacent one side edge thereof. The illustrated means for adjustably securing the spring retaining arm and for holding the same against rotation, consists of a threaded stud 12 that projects laterally from one end of the arm and is selectively disposed in any one of a plurality of holes 13 formed in the platen and arranged in a vertical row adjacent one side edge. The stud is provided with a longitudinal key-way to slidably receive key'projections 1 1 formed on the walls of the holes 13; a thumb nut 15 threaded on the stud 12 retains the arm 11 in cooperation with the platen. It will be noted that by the rovision of a plurality of vertically spaced ioles 13 that the retaining arm may be adjusted for sheets of paper or cards of several sizes.
The platen 6 may also be provided with a line indicator 16, and when such is used it is adjustably secured upon a preferably vertically disposed guide rod 17 disposed between the row of holes 13 and the adjacent edge of the platen and is spaced from the front face thereof as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The arm of the indicator is carried by a slide block 18, one face of which is flat for engagement with the adjacent surface of the platen and this includes a clamp 19 which when released by squeezing the finger-pieces 20 thereof together, allows the indicator to be adjusted vertically. When the finger-pieces are released the block is frictionally held to the guide rod and shifting of the line indicator is prevented. The engagement of the flat face of said block 18 with the front surface of the platen prevents the indicator from rotating on the guide rod and permits it to aid the retaining arm 11.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be evident that I have devised a very simply constructed copy and manuscript holder which is capable of use on various types of writing'machines and is readily associated with standard combined writing and adding and subtracting machines at present on the market. Various changes may be made in the form and proportion and in the details of construction of the several parts of the invention without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a platen having a hole adjacent one side edge, a retaining arm, a stud extending laterally from the arm and through said hole, cooperating means on the stud and the wall of the hole to prevent rotation of said arm, and means on the end of the stud for retaining the same in the hole.
2. A device of the class described comprising a platen having a hole adjacent one side edge, a key projection extending from the wall of the hole, a spring retaining arm, a stud extending laterally from the arm and through said hole, said stud having a keyway slidably receiving said key projection, and means on the end of the stud for retaining the same in the hole.
3. A device of the class described comprising a platen having a plurality of holes arranged in a row adjacent one side edge, a spring retaining arm, a stud extending laterally from the arm and adapted to be selectively disposed through either of said holes, cooperating means on the stud and the walls of the holes to prevent rotation of said arm, and means on the end of the stud for retaining the same in the selected hole.
4. A device of the class described comprising a platen, a non-rotatable supporting member slidable transversely of the platen and adjustable longitudinally of one edge thereof, an arm rigidly secured to the supporting member, said arm being adjustable longitudinally of one edge of the platen with said supporting member and movable toward and away from the face of the platen in planes substantially parallel to the plane of said face, and means for securing the platen to a support.
5. A device of the class described comprising a platen, a non-rotatable supporting member slidable transversely of the platen and adjustable longitudinally of one edge thereof, a spring retaining arm rigidly secured at one end to the supporting member, said arm being adjustable longitudinally of one edge of the platen with said supporting member and movable toward and away from the face of the platen in planes substantially parallel to the plane of said face, and means for securing the platen to a support.
6. In combination, a platen, a retaining arm carried by the platen and adjustably secured thereto to hold articles of different sizes and shapes thereon, and means for vertical. adjustable securement of the platen to a support to vary the relation of the former to the latter in accordance with the size and shape of the articles held bythe retaining arm.
7. In combination, a platen, a retaining arm carried by the platen and adjustably secured thereto to hold articles of diflerent sizes and shapes thereon, and means for Vertical and horizontal secnrement of the platen to a support to Vary the relation of the former to the latter in accordance with the size and shape of the articles held by the retaining arm.
