IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SPONGE TENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,671, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Sonnrnn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use an Improved Implement for the Manufacture of Sponge Tents, to be used in treating diseases of the womb and in treating wounds; and that thefollowing is afull, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved implement, one of the movable jaws being elevated; Fig. 2 is a top view of my improved implement; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same,
In the drawing, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the sameletters of reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of an improved implement to be used in the manufacture of what are termed sponge tents, employed in treating diseasesot' the womb and in treating wounds, the object of the invention being to provide an implement by which a sponge tent can be more easily and rapidly made than at present, while, at
' the same time, a superior article is produced.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A and A show the two rigid jaws of my improved implement. These jaws are provided with the handles B and are hinged at their forward ends within the cap (3. These jaws are formed of metal or any suitable material, and are provided with gradually inclining sides and with a series of teeth-like projections; D and I) show. the movable jaws of my implement, hinged at their forward ends to the yoke E, and intended to be closed upon the jaws A and A. They are made with gradu-' ally-inclining sides, and have a portion of their surface excavated so that the teeth-like projeetions upon the jaws A and A may be accommodated. F shows fasteners for retaining the upper jaws D and D in position when closed upon the jaws A and A.
Such being the construction, the operation is as follows: The sponge tent consists of sponge compressed into the proper shape for the purpose for which it is to be used. The fabric to receive the sponge to becompressed is first secured or clamped between the jaws A and A, D and D a sufficient quantity of the fabric to receive the sponge being allowed to project beyond the under side of the jaws A and A the fabric being clamped by the teeth-like projections and the jaws D and ID being held in position by the fasteners F. The sponge to be compressed is then placed within the fabric, and the jawsA and A D and D may then be drawn together by the handles B, and, having been drawn together, may be locked by the catch 0. The sponge received within the fabric and projecting below the jaws A A will be compressed, and maybe allowed to remain in the implement until surficiently compressed; or, if desired to make many sponge tents in a short time, the fabric, after. the implement has been closed, may be fastenedaround the sponge by sewing, when the compressed sponge may be removed.
By the use of an implement constructed as described a sponge tent can be expeditiously and easily made, and a superior article to the one now in use can be made, as the sponge will be compressed longitudinally as well as laterally, which is desirable as giving a longer sponge tent than heretofore obtained.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is i The combination of the jaws A A and 1) D constructed, substantially as described, with the fasteners F and handles 13, as and for the purposes set forth.
