PUNCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lans ANToN LUND- MARK, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Loraine, in the county of Polk and State of lViseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in punches, and has particular reference to a metal punch.
The invention is employed in garages and like places for forming shims, and has for one of its objects to provide an improved punch wherein the shims may be stamped from a sheet of material in any size desired.
Another object is the provision of a punch, the body portion of which is of an improved construction to form a receptacle'for containing the cut shims.
A further object is to provide a punch of this character, which is slmple in. construc tion, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expres sions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of the punch constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly broken away,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section therethrough, and
Fig. 4; is a section on the line 4% of Fig. 3.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, and consists in providing an elongated base 5, the rear end portion of which is provided with lugs 6 employed for securing the base to a suitable support, and adjacent the forward end of the base 5 the same has extending from its up )er surface a bracket or upstanding portion the rear edge of which is inclined downwardly and rearwardly and terminates in a horizontal bottom 8, forming a portion of a receptacle for receiving the cut shims. The inclined rear edge of the bracket 7 forms one end of the receptafica ofLeners nt Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed March a, 1919.
Serial No. 281,025.
cle, the other end 9 and sides 10 of which are formed by an elongated strip of material, the ends of which are secured, by suitable fasteners 11, on opposite sides of said bracket. It will be obvious that by inclining the rear end of the bracket 7 the shims resting upon the bottom 8 of the receptacle may be easily removed therefrom by sliding the frame upwardly upon said inclined surface.
Preferably extending forwardly from the bracket 7 are the upper and lower spaced lugs 12 and 13, respectively, the former being provided therein with an opening 14, having diametrically disposed notches 15, communicating therewith. The lower lug 13 is likewise provided with an opening 16, arranged in vertical alinement with the opening 14 and surrounding said opening 16, in the upper surface of the lug, is an annular seat 17.
V Arranged for vertical sliding movement in the openings 14 and 16 is a plunger 18, the upward movement of which is limited by means of a transverse stop pin 19, mounted in the plunger and normally extending at right angles to the plane of said diametrically disposed notches, and engaging the under surface of the lugs 12. Shouldit be de sired to remove the plunger 18 in order to replace the same with a smaller or larger plunger, it is only necessary to give the plunger a quarter turn to register the pin 19 with the notches 15, whereupon the plunger may be pulled upwardly and disengaged from the lugs. A reverse operation is employed in replacing the plunger. To normally and yieldably maintain the plunger in its uppermost position there is preferably provided a spring 20, coiled about the intermediate portion of the plunger and having one end engaged in the seat 17 of the lug 13, while the other end thereof engages the pin 19 to normally force the plunger upwardly.
Preferably associated ith the plunger 18 for the purpose of cutting the shims is a die 21 in the form of a disk or plate mounted for rotation upon the pivot 92 secured in the forward end 23 of the base 5 and provided therein. adjacent its periphery with a plurality of openings 24 of different diameters depending upon the size of the shims to be cut. Anyone of these openings 24 is adapted to be vertically alined with the plunger 18 and with an opening 25 formed in the end 23 of the base by rotating the disk 21 in a counterclockwise direction, as shown in the drawing, so that when the sheet of material from which the shims are to be cut is rested upon the die and the plunger forced downwardly, the same will cut the material and cause the shim to drop through the opening 25, where the same may be caught and deposited in the receptacle.
A means is provided in connection with the die 21 to prevent rotation thereof in a clockwise direction, and hold the same in a stationary position against accidental movement and maintain anyone of the openings 24 in vertical alinement with the plunger and said means preferably comprises a spring pawl or detent 26, having one end secured to the lower portion of the bracket 7 and extending tangentially with-relation to a die or disk 21, the other end of said pawl or detent having a lateral extension 27, adapted for engagement with anyone of a plurality of notches 28, formed in the periphery of the disk 21, said notches being so pitched as to permit of the disk being rotated in one direction and prevented from rotation in the opposite direction.
The punch is actuated by striking the plunger 18 with a hammer or other suitable means and the cut pieces or shims are then gathered up from beneath the punch and placed by hand in the receptacle.
hat is claimed is:
1. A punch of the class described comprising a base formed adjacent one end with an upstanding bracket having upper and lower guide lugs projecting therefrom, the upper lug having an opening provided with opposed notches in the edge thereof, the lower lug also having an opening in vertical alinement with the first-named opening, and a seat surrounding the same, a rotatable die mounted upon said base beneath said lug and having a plurality of openings therein adapted to be brought into vertical alinement with the openings in said lugs, a plunger operable in the openings in said lugs and having a transverse stop pin engageable with said upper lug and adapted to be turned to register with said notches whereby to remove the plunger, and a spring coiled about said plunger and having one end engaged in the seat in said lower lug to normally maintain the plunger in aretracted position with respect to an opening in said die.
2. A punch of the class described comprising a base formed adjacent one end with an upstanding bracket having upper and lower guide lugs projecting therefrom, the upper lug having an opening provided with opposed notches in the edge thereof, the lower lug also having an opening in vertical alinement with the first-named opening, and a seat surrounding the same, a rotatable die mounted upon said base beneath said lug and having a plurality of openings therein adapted to be brought into vertical alinement with the openings in said lugs, a plunger operable in the openings in the lugs and having a transverse stop pin engageable with said upper lug and adapted to be turned to register with said notches whereby to remove the plunger, and a spring coiled about said plunger and having one end engaged in the seat in said lower lug to normally maintain the plunger in a retracted position with respect to an opening in said die, and means secured to said base and engaging said die to prevent rotary movement thereof in one direction and maintain any one of the openings therein in vertical alinement with said plunger.
3. A punch of the class described comprising a base having a bracket at one end thereof provided with vertically spaced guide lugs, a spring pressed plunger mounted in said guide lugs for vertical sliding movement therein, a guide rotatably mounted upon said base and cooperating with said plunger and provided in its periphery with a plurality of notches, and a detent having one end secured to said bracket and its other end engageable with any one of said notches to prevent rotation of the die in one direction.
4:. A punch of the class described comprising a base having a bracket formed adj acent one end thereof, one edge of said bracket being inclined downwardly and rearwardly to form one end of a receptacle, said inclined edge being continued in a horizontal plane to form the bottom of said receptacle, a strip having its ends secured to said bracket and bent to form the sides and other end of said receptacle, and punching means supported by said base and bracket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
