RAIL-BOND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented pr. 13, 1920.
Application filed November 2, 191'?. Serial No. 199,958.
To uh wlw/a tf1/my concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLIAM P. BovAan, a citizen of the United States, residing at 4 Mansfield. in the county of Richland and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Bonds, of which the followinglis a. specification.
This invention relates to electrical connectors and has particular reference to such classes known as rail bonds used for electrically connecting the adjacent ends of rails.
Une object of my invention is to, provide an improved device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, easily applied to the, rails, effective in operation and which will give high electrical efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 'dnce a rail bond wherein provision is made. 'whereby the body and terminal members ca n each be secured to the rails in variouspositions.
A further object of the invention is to produce a rail bond adapted to be Welded to the surface of rails and having terminal members composed of metal having a higher meltingr point than the. body member.
still further object of the inventioh is to produce a rail bond having.;` a terminal member composed of ferrous metal partially enj-ircling the body member and adapted to be linterloclnul with the latter by compression il' varying' degrees of i itensity.v ly 'To the attainment o these ends and the 3M mcomplislnnent of other new and useful obl jects. as will appear. the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction combination and arrangen'ient of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown m the accompanying drawings illustrating the embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure l is a side elevational view of a rail joint lshowing the rails as electricall 'connected by a bond embodyingv the princlples of my invention` the bond being Shown in solid ]ines.,in the position as usually applied to the rail in the type of joint illustrated, and in dotted lines in the position in which it. may be applied to the rails rin a different type of rail joint in which the constructional arrangement of the parts-affectin the mechanical connection will not p 1- ant of the. bond being applied in theorner vposition. i
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of -composed preferably of ferrous metal havmgr a higher melting point than the body, and embodying the principles of my invention is shown as electrically connecting the rails. The bond is secured to the rails`by means of an attaching metall-l) `which unites the terniinal member (3) and the body member (2) to each other and to the ,rail by the application of heat.
rl`he, terminal member (3) is provided with a transverse slot or recess and partially encrcles the body member (2), leavin a side surface (5), and the end surface 6), which projects a slight distance above the, end surface of the terminal member exposed for receiving the attaching metal (4,and is secured to and interlocked with t e body member (2). as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
For securing the bond to the rails in the position shownin solid lines, or the body portion thereof resting' in a vertical plane, the attaching metal is welded to the end Surface of the bodymember and in overlapping ieiation therewith.
When the bond is applied to the rails in the position as shown 1n dotted lines, or the body member thereof rstin ina horizontal plane, the attachingV metal' 1s welded to the exposed side surface (5) of. the body member and terminal member (3). l lt Will be. understood that my bond is equally adaptable to be applied to the ball of the rails in this position instead of to the base thereof as shown. i Attention is called to the fact that when thel bond is applied tor the ra/ils in either position. the terminal member (3) and the body member (2) are/each' securely Welded. to' the rail by lneans'of the' attaching metal (l) thus effecting a connection of high electrioal eliicieney und of great mechanical strength.
The terminal member (3) is composedy receive the end of the body member (2).
The body member `(52)'iind timinel member (3) are assembled und the ende (7) of the terminal member (3) ure then forced inward, f' werd euch other in such manner :is to securely lock the parteI together b oompressing the body member posltionet within the transverse slot in n substantially wedge-shaped formation. The` terminal member (3) is mnde of such size that the exposed faces thereof will. present snfiicient uren for receiving the attaching metal ne .is necessary to gire the strength required to secure the bond to the rail.k The trnnsrcree slot or recess for receiving' the body member is produced in any mnnner desired after which it is further formed into the wedgeshnped formation to compreh's und lock the bod.| member in )lait-e.
l :iving fully dlescribed my invention und `illnistrnted the embodiment of the same, l
do not wish to be limited to the details ot' the construction shown since these can be member, and e rigid terminal member, the
' terminal member having a transverse slot in one side face thereof to receive the body member and having the op ositely dis osed sides of' the terminal member incline one toward the other und engaging the body member which is interlocked therebetween.
2. A ruil Vbond comprising a flexible body member, und e terminal member encircling three sides thereof, leaving one side ond the end surface of the body member exposed for receiving an attaching metal, the o apositely disposed sides of the terminal mem r being inc ined, one toward the other, und engagingv the body member which is interlocked therebetween and the remaining eide of the terminal member.
3. A rail bond comprising a flexible body member und n rigid terminal member, thc
terminal member having a'trnnsverse slot in one side thereof to receive the body member and having `the op oeitely disposed sides of the terminal memlier pressed into locking.: engagement with the body member.
4. A rail bond com rising a flexible body Iund u. terminal mem er composed of mnterial having u higher melting point than the bond body; the terminal member eneircling three sides of the body and having two -eides thereof pressedinto engagement with the bond body in such a manner asto compress the' latter therebetween into :l enh, ystnntiully wedge-shape formation.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
