Be it known that l, WILLIAM P. BovAan, a citizen of the United States, residing at 4 Mansfield. in the county of Richland and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Bonds, of which the followinglis a. specification.
This invention relates to electrical connectors and has particular reference to such classes known as rail bonds used for electrically connecting the adjacent ends of rails.
Une object of my invention is to, provide an improved device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, easily applied to the, rails, effective in operation and which will give high electrical efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 'dnce a rail bond wherein provision is made. 'whereby the body and terminal members ca n each be secured to the rails in variouspositions.
A further object of the invention is to produce a rail bond adapted to be Welded to the surface of rails and having terminal members composed of metal having a higher meltingr point than the. body member.

Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of -composed preferably of ferrous metal havmgr a higher melting point than the body, and embodying the principles of my invention is shown as electrically connecting the rails. The bond is secured to the rails`by means of an attaching metall-l) `which unites the terniinal member (3) and the body member (2) to each other and to the ,rail by the application of heat.
rl`he, terminal member (3) is provided with a transverse slot or recess and partially encrcles the body member (2), leavin a side surface (5), and the end surface 6), which projects a slight distance above the, end surface of the terminal member exposed for receiving the attaching metal (4,and is secured to and interlocked with t e body member (2). as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
For securing the bond to the rails in the position shownin solid lines, or the body portion thereof resting' in a vertical plane, the attaching metal is welded to the end Surface of the bodymember and in overlapping ieiation therewith.
When the bond is applied to the rails in the position as shown 1n dotted lines, or the body member thereof rstin ina horizontal plane, the attachingV metal' 1s welded to the exposed side surface (5) of. the body member and terminal member (3). l lt Will be. understood that my bond is equally adaptable to be applied to the ball of the rails in this position instead of to the base thereof as shown. i Attention is called to the fact that when thel bond is applied tor the ra/ils in either position. the terminal member (3) and the body member (2) are/each' securely Welded. to' the rail by lneans'of the' attaching metal (l) thus effecting a connection of high electrioal eliicieney und of great mechanical strength.
