Application filed January 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERIK XV. Nelson, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New Rochelle, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to projectors for moving pictures and has for its object to produce a projector which can be sold at a very low price, shall be exceedingly simple in construction and not liable to derangement even in the hands of the inexpert, and shall be small in compass and light in weight. In accordance with the invention the operating shaft has its bearing in the casing which supports the sprocket drums, the film feeder, the lens and the shutter, and carries a gear with crown teeth and internal teeth, with which the sprocket drums, feeder and shutter shaft are directly engaged, without intermediate gearing of any kind, such gear also forming part of the casing which completely incloses the several intermeshing gears and also carrying the pulley over which passes the band for driving the lower take-up spool. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a complete projector which embodies the invention, the source of light not being shown and the condenser being partly broken away.

Fig. 3 is a View in section on the irregular plane indicated by the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The entire mechanism may be mounted on a bed plate a. To the bed plate is secured a casing b, which can be madeconveniently as a die casting, having a vertical wall I) and a flange b the upper part being formed on the arc of a circle. Centrally with respect to the upper part of the casing is formed a sleeve bearing 6 which may be extended in both directions from the vertical wall 6. In the bearing 6 is mounted the crank shaft 0 which is formed with or has secured thereto at one end a crank a, while at the other end it has secured thereto a gear Specification of Letters Patent.

The flange b of the casing b has also formed therewith a bearing sleeve I) which receives the shaft m on which is secured the shutter m. At its inner end the shaft m is provided with a pinion m which meshes directly with the crown teeth (1 of the gear d, this arrangement permitting the shutter to be driven directly from the gear d without intermediate gearing.
Also mounted on the casing b is a cylindrical shell n to receive the lens tube 0, the shell'n having an oblique slot n to receive a screw pin 0 set into the lens tube 0 for the purpose of effecting conveniently the focusing of the lens.
It will be observed that the gear cl itself forms part of the inclosing casing and protects the intermeshing gears from dust and from entanglement with the film. A projector for moving pictures com prising a flanged casing provided with bearings for the several working parts, a driving shaft mounted in the casing, a driving gear fixed on the driving shaft and conforming to the flange of the casing to complete the inclosure and formed with crown teeth and a shutter having its shaft mounted in a bearing and having a pinion engaging the crown teeth of the driving gear.
3. A projector for moving pictures comprising a flanged casing formed with bearing sleeves for the several Workingparts, a driving shaft mounted in one of said bearings, a driving gear having internal teeth and crown teeth and fixed on the driving shaft and completing the inclosure of the casing, a shutter shaft and shutter mounted in onev of the hearings on the casingand having a pinion in mesh with the crown teeth of the driving gear, sprocket drums and shafts mounted in other hearings on the casing and having pinions meshing with the internal teeth of thedriving gear and a film feeding device and shaft mounted in another of the bearings on the casing and having a pinion in mesh with the internal teeth of the driving gear.
