Be it known that 1*, GASOOIGNE LUM-LEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lagos, Nigeria, Vest Africa, engineer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Connection with the Glands and Packings of" Centrifugal Sand-Pumps, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention has for its principal object to prevent sand from the body of a centrifugal sand-pump from reaching the impellershaft packing in the stuffing-box and causing excessive wear and injury of the parts, although my invention is also capable of use in analogous cases where it is desirable to afford protection against the entrance of matter liable to cause undue wear and injury.
I will, for the purpose of description, presume that my invention is to be applied to a centrifugal sand pump from which its analogous applications will also be under stood.
The impeller shaft of the pump is provided with a ring which works in a groove in that part of the bearing, or bush, in which the said shaft works, which is between the interior of the pump and the packing in the stufiing-box and forms the abutment against which the packing is pressed by the gland-proper, or its bush.
There is a small space between the said ring and the said groove, and, when the pump is at work, fluid under pressure is forced, by any suitable means, into the said space in a direction toward the interior of the pump so as to prevent sand passing from the pump into the stuffing-box.
In order that my invention, and how it may be performed, may be well understood, I will describe with reference to the accompanying drawing, a construction in accordance therewith, but I do not limit myself to the precise details of this construction. The said drawing shows a section of part of a pump through the stuffing-box.
The impeller shaft A, is provided with the aforesaid ring a, at a part which comes between the interior of the pump, (on the right-hand side of the drawing) and the packing E, in the stuffing-box. The said ring a, and the aforesaid groove (marked 0) in which it works, I will presume to be square, or practically square, in cross-section. Two of the sides of the said groove 0 are constituted by a neck-bush C, which may be made in halves and secured to the pump casing, a portion of the internal periphery at theinnerside of this neck-bush C, being cut away leaving a recess somewhat larger than the ring a, on the impeller-shaft A and forming the said two sides of the groove 0, the third side of the, said groove, being formed by one side of a lantern-ring B which forms a continuation of the bushing of which the aforesaid neck-bush O, constitutes part, the other side of the lantern-ring B, constituting the abutment for the packing E, when it is forced in by the bush 7', of the gland-proper F, of the stuffing-box. The fourth side of the square is constituted by the part of the impeller shaft A, where the ring a is applied. The said ring a may be made in halves and be secured to the impeller shaft A by screws, or in any other suitable way.
Passages, (Z formed in the pump casing D, communicate with spaces Z) in the lantern ring B and these passages d are connected by any suitable nozzles (such as those shown at 6 and pipes with a pumping device, or any other suitable means by which the water, or other fluid employed, can be forced into the said passages (Z and spaces 6, thence to pass, slowly under pressure, to the interior of the pump through the space 0 between the ring a and groove 0 (which space may, for instance, be about one thirty second of an inch) and this will prevent any sand, or grit, from passing from the pump to the stuffing boX and packing E.
IVhat I claim is 1. In apparatus such as a centrifugal sand-pump, the combination with a shaft, a bearing in which it is rotatable, a packing-box and packing at one end of the said bearing, and a neck-bush at the other end of the said bearing, of a ring secured to the shaft so as to be incapable of longitudinal movement thereon, the neck-bush being grooved to accommodate said ring, and leave a clearance between it and the groove, and means for admitting liquid under pressure to pass between the said packing-box and neck-bush and through the space between the said ring and groove toward the interior of the pump.
2. In an apparatus such as a centrifugal sand-pump, the combination of a shaft, and thereon a neck-bush, a lantern-ring, a packing-box and packing, the said neck-bush having in it an annular channel adjacent to the said lantern-ring, a ring secured to the said shaft, so as to be incapable of longi tudinal movement thereon, and rotatable, with clearance, in the said annular channel, and means for admitting liquid, under pressure, through the said lantern-ring and thence between the said lantern-ring and shaft, and through the said annular channel between the neck-bush and the ring on the shaft toward the inside of the pump.
3. The combination with a shaft, a neck bush and a lantern ring juxtaposedthereon, and a packing bearing against the lantern ring, said neck bush being recessed adjacent the lantern ring to afford an annular channel, and said lantern ring being pierced to afford a liquid passage, of a ring secured to said shaft and rotating with clearance in said annular channel, and-means for admitting liquid under pressure to the hole pierced in said lantern ring to afford a slow flow of pressurefluid between said lantern ring and shaft to the said annular channel and thence between the neck bush and shaft to the side of the bush opposite the packing, for the purposes set forth.
