INlFROVEIWEl\lTl IN CHAIR-SEATS.
Spocilieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,622, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY BJORKMAN and CHARLES J oHN LAGERGREN, of Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chair-Seats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speci iication, in which drawing- Figure l represents a transverse section of our invention in the plane Fig. 2 5 and Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the same.
Similarletters indicate eorrespondn g parts.
This invention consists of a chair-seat composed ot' a plate of sheet metal stamped or otherwise brought to the required shape and covered on its surface with a layer of cloth or felt, which is secured to the metallic supportin g-plate by suitable cement, in combination w ith a frame to which the metallic supportin plate, together with its covering of felt or cloth, are fastened by tacks, nails, or otherwise in such amanuer that by the covering of felt or cloth the hardness of the metallic supportingplate and its quality of abstracting heat are reduced and a chair-seat of superior cheapness,
. durability, and convenience is obtained.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a metallic plate, which is depressed in its center and provided with a flat rim, a., for the purpose of connecting the same to the frame B. For the purpose of bringing the metallic plate in the proper shape, we first cut out the blanks and then we expose the same to the action of a drop or of suitable stamps and dies, whereby we are enabled to shape our metallic supportingplates with great rapidity. After the metallic supporting-plate has been brought in the required shape, we protect its surface by a layer, C, of felt, cloth, or other material of a similar nature, which we secure to the metal plate by means of a suitable cement; and, after the layers have been iirmly united, We fasten the same down to the frame B by nails or other equivalent means.
If desired, our seat may be perforated with a number of holes, b, to impart to it a certain ornamental appearance, and to increase its `elasticity and comfort. A
By applying a layer of felt or cloth to the surface of the metallic supporting-plate the convenience of our seat is materially increased, the quality of the metallic plate to abstract heat from the body of a person resting thereon is reduced, and the softness of the seat is increased, while the full strength and durability of the metallic supporting-plate are retained. y
Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A chair-seat, composed of a metallic supporting-plate, A, and a protecting layer, C, of cloth or other equivalent material, both being irml y united and fastened to a common frame, B, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed by us this 16th day of September, 1872.
