Description

' H. DUFFY.
VACUUM SEALING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22, 19:7.

HENRY DUFFY, b]? LONGMONT, COLORADO.
VACUUM SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 22, 1917. Serial No. 203,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DUFFv, of
' Longmont, in the county of Boulder and State of "Colorado, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Vacuum Sealin Devices; and I do hereby declare the fol owing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My object is to provide a simple and effective device by which a vacuum pump may be readily placed into communication with a space in which a vacuum is to be created, the device having a valve by which its port may be closed, and the device being bodily movable when this characteristic is rendered desirable;
My in ention is adapted for use on window sashes having two spaced apart panes with a vacuum existing between the panes. Also where two pipes are employed, one containing the other and a vacuum space exists between the two pipes.
InFigure 1 I have shown the device attached to a window sash. Fig. 2 shows its application to pipes and Fig. 3 is an.en-
larged detailed view of the device.
Referring to Fig. 1 the sash is designa%elald e vacuum attachment is indicated generally at 4. The window sash is formed with an orifice 5 adapted to receive the attachment.
In Fig. 3 the attachment is illustrated in detail. As shown it comprises an exteriorly.
threaded plug having a central port 6 extending entirely-through its length and a laterally projecting passage 7' which intersects theport: 6 and extends through the outer face of the plug. This passage is adapted to receive a. valve 8 having a transv verse port 9 adapted to register with the port 6. By rotating the valve so that the two ports are out of alineinent the valve body will'effectively close the port 6. Both plug 4 and valve 8 are shown formed with a transverse cleft at their outer ends to receive a. suitable tool, such as a screw-driver to effect rotation.
When .used as in Fig. 1 the plug 4 is turned to withdraw it sufliciently far from the sash to permit the valve 8 to be reached to turn it to bring the two ports into "alinement.. The nozzle of the vacuum pump may then be inserted into the plug and the atmospheric pressure withdrawn from the space intermediate the window panes.
' Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
When this operation is completed the valve provide for the bodily movement of the plug as in the case of window sashes, as the piping is usually fixed and the projection of the plug is not objectionable. I have shown the plug extending from the space between a pipe 10 and an outer casing 12.
Manifestly this attachment is adapted for use on show-casesor any other structure having double walls and an intermediate vacuum space.
There are no parts requiring removal from the frame or casing. The mere axial turn of valve 8 effects the opening or closing of port 6, according as port 9 of the valve is placed in or out of register with port 6.
. I claim as my invention: I
1. An exteriorly threaded plug having a central port and a lateral passage, and a valve seated in said passage and having a transverse port, said valve when seated lying wholly within the plug, whereby when said plug is tapped in an orifice in a wall it will not project beyond the wallbut may be partly withdrawn to permit opening said valve.
2. A retractable sealing device comprising a plug having a port 6 extending therethrough, and a passage 7 intersecting said' HENRY DUFFY.
