KNUT BERGLOF, OF MONESSEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed May 22, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, KNUT BERGLOF, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Monessen, in the county of Wrestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Annealing- Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements yin annealing furnaces.
The objects of my invention are to charge the furnace in one single load, and also to discharge it in one si-ngle load, thereby gaining in time of operation, cost of labor, and room occupied for the operation of the furnaces.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, which showv a combination of two furnaces operated with one charging platform and one conveyer.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view between a pair of furnaces taken on the line 1-1, Fig. 2, the furnace of the view being` partly in longitudinal section taken' on line 2 2, Fig. 2;, and 2 is a view transverse to Fig. 1, the left-hand furnace of the view being in cross section taken' on the line 3-3, through the chimneys and the right-hand furnace in cross-section in advance of the chimneys on the line The rectangular, brick-line steel-casing- 1 supported by the columns 2, 3 and 5, the brick-lined top-cover 6, and the brick-lined bottom-cover 7 constitute the frame-work of each furnace. The casing 1, the top-cover 6 and the bottom-cover 7 are built up' of steelangle and plate girders, the bottom-cover 7 also having steel-plates for supporting the brick lining.
The rectangular casing 1 has the steelplate springs 8 all around, top and bottom, pressing against the top-cover 6 and bottom-cover 7 when they are closed in order to prevent air from Aleaking' in through the sides during annealing process.
Fuel in the form of a gas and air mixture, or its substitute, is introduced in the furnace through yopenings 9 in the ends of casing 1 by means of pipes 10.
The top-cover 6 has a gear-rack 11 connected to each end of it in the center and sliding between guide-angles 12 supported by struts 13 and 14 which are connected to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 235,953.
columns 2, 3, and 5, each of said gear-racks 11\ engaging a pair of gear-wheels 15 secured to shafts 1G turning in bearings 17, which are supported by struts 13. A compressed-air cylinder 18 is provided for lifting the top-cover 6, said cylinder 18 being supported by strut 19 connected to columns 2 and 3 and having its piston-rod 20 connected to the cover 6. Compressed air is admitted and exhausted through the airpassage 21. The top-cover 6 has two briclrlined chimneys 22, which provide outlets for the fumes.
The bottom-cover 7 is supported on one side by hinges 23 secured to it and to casing 1, and on the other side when closed, is supported by a locking mechanism composed of half-hinges 24 secured to the cover 7 half-hinges 25 secured to casing 1, and rod 2G having' pins 27, said half- hinges 24 and 25 engaging each other and locked by said pins 27. Rod 26 slides in grooves in halfhinges 25. By moving the rod 26 longitudinally it will be apparent that the pins 27 carried by said rod will be moved in and out of the half- hinges 24 and 25 so as to lock and release the same.
The lowering and lifting of bottom-cover 7 is -executed by compressed-air cylinder 28 supported on foundation 29, having the end of its piston-rod 30 engaged in a half-hinge 31 secured to the cover. Compressed air is inserted and exhausted through air-passage 32.
rlhe charging platform 33 is built up of steel-plates stiffened by steel-angles and supported by alatticed steel strut 34 which has a hinge 35 secured to it at each end at the bottom chord, said hinges being supported by struts 36 connected to columns 2, 3 and 5. A compressed-air cylinder 37 slides on piston-rod 38, the ends of which are secured to casing 1. The cylinder 37 is provided with two projecting pins 39 secured to it and sliding in slots 4() in strut 34. Compressed air is introduced and exhausted through air-passages 41 and 42.
The conveyer consists of pairs of rollers 43, each pair secured to a shaft 44 turning in bearings 45, said shaft 44 having a bevelgear 46 secured to it at one end, said bevelgears 46 engaging bevel-gears 48 secured to driving-shaft 47 which is turning in bearingsl 49. On top of rollers 43 is traveling receiving-vessel 50 built u of channels and angles or some other suita. le shapes. Skid- Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
plates 51 supported by brackets 52 are provided for the annealed material to slide on.
The operation of the furnaces is conducted in the following manner The material to be annealed is placed on the charging platform 33. The top-cover 6 is raised by introducing compressed air through air-passage 21 into cylinder' 18, said compressed air operating the piston-rod 2O connected to said cover and as the racks rise with the cover said racks turn the gear-wheels 15 secured to shafts 16, thus lifting both ends of the cover simultaneously. The charging platform 33 with the material to be annealed on top of it is now tilted over, turning around hing'es 35 by inserting compressed air through air-passage 41 into cylinder 37, thus compelling the cylinder to slide on piston-rod 38 secured to casings 1, said cylinder 37 with its twoY projecting pins '39 secured to it and sliding in slots Ll0 in strut 3l, thus tilting the platform, as shown in vdotted lines, and dumping the material to be annealed into the furnace. The compressed air is now discharged from the cylinder through passage 1-1 and introduced into it through passage 42, the platform 33 thus being raised up in the same way as it was tilted'. After top-cover 6 is lowered by letting the compressed air out of the cylinder 18 through passage 21, annealing takes place in usual way. The annealing being accomplished, compressed air is introduced int-o cylinder 28 through passage 32, lifting the bottom cover 7 a trifle, thus enabling a man to push pins 27 secured to rod 26 out of half- hinges 24 and 25 letting the cover loose to be swung around hinges 23 by slowly letting the compressed air out of the cylinder, the annealed material falling down on skid 51 and into receiving-vessel 50, which is carried away on conveyer rollers 113. The bottom-cover is closed in a similar way as it was swung down and the operation of the furnace can be repeated.
lVhat I claim is: f
1. In an annealing furnace, the combination with the sides, end-walls and bottom, of a vertically movable top, and means for lifting the same -toa height whereby the material maybe charged into said furnace between the raised top and the sides.
