WATER-CIRCULATING PUMP FOR COMBUSTION-ENGINES.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed January 3, 1919. Serial No. 289,544.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ()rro T. SCHARMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marshtield, county of 'ood and State of Wisconsin. have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in \Vater- Circulating Pumps for Combustion'Engines, of which the following is a speeification.
My present invention relates generally to water circulating pumps for combustion motors, and more particularly to a specially designed and constructed pump for use in connection with Ford automobiles to replace, the thermosiphon action ordinarily present, with a force feed action, and with a minimum disturbance of the parts usually prescut in commotion with the cooling system first named.
My invention aims therefore to provide. a device of this nature which may be installed with a minimum expense oftime, and furthermore aims at the provision of a simple, inexpensive water pum having an eil'ective action and of a durable nature,
In the drawings illustrating my present invention and forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the practical application of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substan tially on line 3-3, of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal section;
Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section taken substantially on line 5-4) of Fig. 4;
Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical cross sections taken respectively on lines fi-($ and T-'i' of Fl 4.
Rel erring now to these figures my invention roposes a water pump which includes an eongated frame comprising a bar 10 having at oneend an angular arm 11 supporting a shaft. bearing 12, and provided at its other end with a pump casing 13 cast integral therewith and pro ecting laterally therefrom with its axis in the plane of the axis of the bearin 12 and parallel. to the axis of the bar 10 or substantially so.
The pump casing 13 has av main pumping chamber 14 therein communicating at its forward side with a suction chamber '15, and between the lower portions of these two chambers division wall 16 has a lower opening 17 which as seen in Fig. 5 is on a plane with the base of the pumping chamber 14 so that when water is withdrawn from the system the pumping chamber will be effectively drained and the danger of freezing access thus likewise had to the propeller" 19 see ired by a taper pin 20 upon the rear end oi the propeller shaft 21.
Forwardly of this suction chamber 15 the pump casing 13 has a. studio box 22 through which the shaft 21 prOJectS forwnrdly through the bearing 12 of the frame arm 11. Secured upon the propeller rearwardly of and in engagement with the hearing 12 is a set collar 23 which, with the propeller 19 properly disposed upon the rear end of the shaft and the rear extremity of the shaft abutting the cap late 18 as seen in Figs. 4 and 5 in particu ar, cooperates with these parts in supporting the propeller in exactly the proper relation within the pumping chamber 14.
'1' 1e pumping chamber 14 also communicates at one side with an'opcni-ng 24 through the'frame as seen in Fig. 4, which opens through the bar 10 adjacent one end and is thus adapted for alinement with the water inlet opening 25 of a combustion motor, particularly the engine of Ford automobiles as shown indicated at 26,
At opposite sides of the opening 24, the bar 10 1s apertured fbr the reception of bolts 27 by means of which the .frame and pump may be secured in position upon the motor, the bolts entering the o enin s usually present for the reception 0 the firm 0 bolts of the lower water pipe which, wlth the present pum is connected to a downwardly and forwar ly extending nipple 28 of the pump casing 13, which communicates at its EPPGI end with the suction space or cham- The forward portion of the propeller shaft frame in tertpipe 15 then connected with the n1 ple and 81,to drive the propeller shaft 21 of the a bearing at the forward portion of the fun shaft 33 simultaneously from the crank shaft 82.
It is obvious that in the installation of my improved pump, which re laces with that of a sitive force feed, t e usual thermosi on cooling system of a Ford automobi c, it is sim 1y necessary to remove the flange of the ower water pipe of a Ford motor from the side of the cylinder block and connect my improved gum and its place as described. he owcr wa- 28 after having been cut down sufiicient y in length, and the usual fan belt replaced by a belt :34 which will extend around the three pulleys 29, 30 and 31 instead of merely from pulley 30 to 31 as usual.
When so mounted, the pump is ready for o eration, and in action sucks water from chamber 15 to chamber 14 of the pump casing and in turn expels such water forcibly into the water space of the cylinder bloc through the openings 24 and 25.
When the water is withdrawn from the ,cooling system, all water from the pump chamber 14 will drain into the lower water pipe through the opening 17 previously ,mentioned, and thus avoid all .danger of freezing.
The cap 18 on the pump casing, being removable, permits of ready access to the pump chamber and the propeller 19 so that any of the parts may be readily replaced or repaired when occasion arises.
I; claim:
1. The combination with a combustion motor havingits water jacket provided with awatcr inlet opening at one side of the c linder block, of a frame secured horizontally along the cylinder block, having a bearing in its forward end and a pump casing at'its rear end, and provided with an opening com- .municating between the pump casing and 'the said water inlet ppemng of the motor, isaid pump cas nghavlng a rear pump chamberand a suctloncham er forwardly, of e T pump chamber, a detachable cap norma 1y closing the rear end of the pump chamber,
tween the said depending nipple an ump casing, a shaft extending through the orward bearing of the frame and forwardly through the bearing of the pump casing, a pulley secured upon the forward end of said shaft, said casing haying a depending nipple communicating with the suction chamber, a pro eller secured upon the rear end of the she. t within the pump chamber, and a belt connecting the pulley of the propeller shaft with the crank shaft and fan shaft pulleys of the motor, the rear end of said propeller shaft extending rearwardly beyond the propeller and into engagement with the cap of the pump casin and a set collar secured upon the propel er shaft rearwardly of and in engagement with the forward bearing of the frame whereby to prevent endwise movement of the shaft in either'direction.
2. A pump attachment of the character described com rising a frame including an elongated bar liavin an angular arm a one end provided with a caring, said bar having a pump casing outstandin therefrom at its opposite end rovided wit an outlet 0pening through t e bar and with an extension nipple forming an inlet, a shaft journaled through the pump casing and through said arm bearing, a propeller secured upon the said shaft within the pump chamber, and a pulley secured upon the outer free end of the propeller shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, a pump casing having a pump chamber and a suction chamber at one side of the amp chamber, a detachable cap normally 0 osing the opposite side of the pump chamber, a shaft jouinaled axially through the casing, a propeller secured on the shaftwithin the pump chamber, said casing having a dependmg nipple communicating with its suction chamber, and .also having a division wall across its lower portion between its suction chamber and pump chamber provided with an opening thcrethrough communicatinlg be the lowermost portion of the pump chamber, for the purpose described.
