To all Iwhom t may concern Be it known that I. IILYssEs G. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens t'or Portholes and the like, ot which the Jfollowing is a specification.
' It is an object of the invention to provide screens for circular openings or windows suehias the port holes of vessels and the invention consists in the features and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In these drawings the screen material is indicated bv -l this being of circular form having an edge portion Q, extendingfrom the main portion at right angles thereto as shown in Fig. 6. The :screen material mav be of ordinary wire netting and its flanged or rim portion 2 is seated within a main 'frame member or ring 3 which is .of channeled form being provided with inturned flanges 4c and 5. The screen material is held within ythe vm ain frame member 3 by a clamping ring 6. The main frame'member is divided at 7 and the clamping ring 6 is also divided, one of its ends lbeing turned to form an eye 8 receiving the pivot pin of a toggle or operating lever 9 to which is .con-

nected at the opening l0 a spring member ll which at its other end engages the inwardly turned portion 12 on the other end of the clamping` strip or ring that is opposite the end at which the eye 8 is tormed. The spring member is or' spiral form and it constitutes in effect one arm ot a toggle lever arrangement of which the operating lever or arm 9 forms the other member', for it will be observed by reference to Fig. l that the point of connection 10 between the spring l1 and the lever 9, is below or to one side of the vpivot eve 8.
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1 the screen may be said to be in its collapsed or nneXpanded condition, its diameter then being such that it readil)Y can be placed in position within the circular window opening or port hole, whereupon b v moving the lever 9 toward the right in Fig.
, l to the position shown in Fig. 2 the binding or clamping strip 6 will be expanded. because its two ends will be moved farther apart from cach other than in the relation of Fig. l and 'the pressurevthus exerted through this expanding strip or ring will expand the main iframe memberl 3 by forcing its ends farther apart and then the main frame member will beclamped against the wall of the window opening to be held securely in place. The clamped position ot' the parts is shown in Fig. 2 and it will be noticed that the point 10 where the toggle spring connects with the linger lever 9 will have crossed the-line connecting the pivot eve 8 with vthe point where the toggle spring bears upon the end l2 of the clamping strip or ring. The expansion of the clamping strip is due to the combined action ot the toggle lever 9 and the toggle spring l1 tore ing the ends of the lsplit ring apart. The presence of the spring 11 will permit the screen trame to Vaccommodate itself to dit'- ferent diameters of circular window openings or port holes within certain limits because the spring will vield after the main split frame 3 has been finallyY seated against the wall of the window opening. This spring will allow for expansion and contraction of the screen frame and the screen material.
In order to bridge the space between the ends of the clamping strip I provide a bridge plate 13 Fig. l provided with an opening lllto engage a stud 15 on the end of the clamping strip or ring, the said plate 13 being sulliciently long as shown in dotted line inl Fig. 1 to extend across the gap bctween the ends of the clamping ring and to overlap the end at which the eye S is located.
In order to provide a flush surface to bear upon the rim or flange 2 ot the screen material I form shoulders 1G and 17 on the clamping strip near its ends so that the extreme ends of the strip will lie in a lower plane than the main portions ot the strip and this provides the necessary space 'for receiving the ends or' the bridge plate 13 the outer surface of which will then form substantially arcontinuation oli-the outer surface of the clamping strip, being throughout at substantially the same distance from the center of the screen material so that an unbroken bearing surface will be provided to engage the inner side ol the rim 2 of the screen material.

In this form the lug 19 which is cut out from and bent down in relation to the strip forms the fulcrum or bearing which is engaged by the end of the spring 11.
It will be seen that the whole device is sell:1 contained and may be marketed and handled in applying or removing as one body. It will suit different sizes of window openings and will allow for expansion and contraction.
The end of the lugs 12 and 19 are rounded in order not to catch in the screen material, and the end of the extension 1S is thinned.
I do not limit myself to the particular construction shown, and as one modification I may employ a plurality of the toggle arrangements, these being disposed at different points around the circumference of the ring. By employing a number of toggles it will be possible to get more expansion and contraction of the frame in setting it in position or removing it therefrom. The expansion of the device is limited by the screen cloth only which can be expanded about one-half inch in one place, but with a number of toggles the expansion can be increased.
,What I claim is:
1. A screen for` circular window openings or port holes comprising an expansible substantially circular frame carrying the screen material together `with means fr securing` the frame in place in said opening. i
2. In combination in a screen for port holes and like window openings, an expansible frame member of substantially circular form, screen material carried thereby and means for expanding the circular frame to thereby hold it within the said opening.
3. In combination a substantially circular expansible frame member, screen material carried thereby, and resilient means for expanding the said trame member agafnst the wall of the window opening to be held by, rict-ional engagement therewith, substantially as described.
4. In combination a split expansible Jframe member of substantially circular form, screen material carried thereby and means for expanding the split ring to seat it in the window opening.
5. In combination a substantially circular expansible frame member, screen material carried thereby and toggle means including a spring for expanding the frame member against the wall of the Window opening, substantially as described.
6. In combination a substantially circular expansible frame member, screen material, an expansible substantially Vcircular clamping member to clamp'the screen to the frame member and means for expanding the clamping member to hold the screen and through the expansion of said member to expand the Jframe member into holding contact with the wall of the window opening, substantially as described. 4 i
7. In combination, a split expansible frame ring, a split expansible clamping ring, screen material clamped to the frame ring by the clampingv ring and toggle means between the ends of the clamping ring to expand the same to clamp the screen material. against the frame ring and to expand the latter against the wall or the window opening, substantially as described.
8. In combination, a split expansible frame ring, a split expansible clamping ring, screen material clamped to the frame yring by the clamping ring and toggle means between the ends of the clamping ring to expand the same to clamp the screen material against the frame ring and to expand the latter against the wall of the window opening, said toggle means being yieldable to accommodate diiferent sizes of window openings and to allow for expansion and contraction, substantially as described.

In combination a split expansible frame ring of channeled form, screen material having a rim portion extending at right angles to its body portion and Seated in said channel, a split clamping ring also seated against the said rim portion, and means for expanding the clamping ring and through it expanding the frame ring, substantially as described.
l1. In combination, screen material, a split eXpanSible ring member, a toggle arm pivotally mounted and a spring connected 'with the toggle arm and connected with the end of the expansible ring7 substantially as described.
l2. In combination a frame member split and expansible, a clamping ring split and expansible, screen material held by said members, and a bridge piece extending over the split portion of the clamping ring, substantially as described.
13. In combination a split expansible iframe member, a split expansible clamping ring having an inturned lug7 a toggle arm pivoted to one end of the split ring7 a Spring connected to the toggle arm and connected to the intnrned lng' and screen material held between the rings7 substantially as described. p
