Application filed April 30, 1919- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN A. Freeman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grank Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Markers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention seeks to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient device whereby tickets of admission to places of amusement may be easily stamped to indicate that the war tax levied thereon has been paid and the date of the payment. The invention also seeks to provide a device for the stated purpose which may be easily secured in a fixed position and which will be so constructed that the ticket to be stamped may be easily guided into the stamping position and the invention also seeks to provide a device in which the stamping or printing member may be readily adjusted so as to secure accuracy in the date. Other incidental objects will appear in the course of the following description.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a base member consisting of a U-shaped plate 1 having countersunk openings 2 in its back plate whereby screws or other fastening devices may be inserted into a desk, a standard or other fixed support. The ends of this base member are open, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and at its lower end its side members are provided with inwardly projecting lips or lugs 23 which form stops for the roller-carrying member. At the free edges of the side members are inwardly projecting longitudinal flanges 4: which serve as guides and retainers for the roller carrying member. A leaf spring 5 is secured at its upper end to the back plate of the base member and the lower end of this spring projects inwardly or forwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. The roller-carrying member consists of a box 6 having an opening 7 in its front side near one end whereby to permit the ready application of additional ink to the inking pad 8 which is disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

immediately adjacent said opening and is preferably a roller having a surface of felt or other material the spindle or axle 9 of the roller being mounted in countersunk openings 10 in the side of the box whereby it will be held in proper position and may rotate freely. The side members of the box 6 are of such dimensions that they will fit closely but slidably within the base member between the back plate of the same and the flanges at and the open construction of the base member imparts a slight resiliency thereto so that it will yield sufficiently to permit the ready entrance of the box but will engage the box so closely that it will be firmly held in its operative position. It will be readily understood that the box is inserted from the upper end and will be supported by the engagement of its lower end with the lips or lugs 3. A printing roller 11 is fitted within the lower portion of the box and has its axle or spindle 12 mounted in countersunk openings 13 in the sides of the box, the parts being so proportioned that the printing surfaces upon the roller 11 will bear upon the inking roller and receive ink therefrom. The upper end 1 1: of the box 6 is free of the side members thereof; but preferably integral with the front plate of the same and the inner edge of its top member is turned downwardly to provide a guiding rib or flange 15 which is spaced from the back plate of the base member so as to furnish a mouth or inlet through which the end of the ticket to be stamped may be inserted, the flange holding the ticket out of contact with the inking roller as will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 3. The printing roller in the illustrated embodiment of the invention is provided upon its surface with an annular band 16 upon which is an in scription indicating that the tax has been paid and at each side of this printing band is an annular rib 17 which will imprint a straight line upon the ticket as will be readily understood. Upon reference to Fig. :1 more particularly it will be noted that the printing band 16 and the ribs 17 are disposed nearer one end of the printing roller and near the other end thereof I provide type faces or blocks 18 which are intended to imprint the date upon the ticket. As shown. most clearly in Fig. 3, these types are preferably rectangular so as to fit within rectangular sockets in the roller and are removable so that the type may be changed daily and, therefore, the correct date always imprinted upon the ticket.

The manner of using the device will, .it is thought, be readily understood. The base member is secured in position where it will be convenient to the ticket seller and in the drawings has been shown in an upright position. It is to be understood, however, that it may be secured upon the top of a desk and that the terms upper and lower as used in this description are relative only and not restrictive and are used merely for convenience in referring to the drawings. After the base member has been secured in place, the box 6 is inserted therein so as to slide against the lips or lugs 23 and thereby be properly positioned within the base member, the printing roller being brought adjacent the free end of the spring 5 and the guiding lip or fiange 15 being disposed within the entrance end of the base member. The tickets in actual practice are furnished in continuous strips wound upon reels and each ticket is detached as an admission is sold., T he end of a strip of tickets is inserted between the back plate of the base member and the guiding lip or flange 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and is pushed through the device so that it will be held against the printing roller by the spring 5 and the free end of the spring may be pressed against the back plate when the end of the strip is being in sorted, if so desired, so that the ticket will not be forced into the bight between the inking and printing rollers but will pass through the device in such position that its free end may be easily grasped beyond the marker and the strip then drawn through the same as the tickets are needed. After the strip has been placed in position within the marker, as shown in F 3, the spring 5 will press the tickets against the surface of the printing roller and the frictional contact will cause the roller to rotate as the ticketsare withdrawn. As the roller rotates, the successive points of the printing surface will be brought into contact with the back of the ticket and, consequently, the proper imprint made thereon.

The device is exceedingly simple in the construction and arrangement of its parts and is not apt to get out of order. It is easily operated and requires no attention on the part of the ticket seller, except possibly to occasionally replenish the ink on the inkmg pad or roller. While the device, as stated, is intended more particularly for imprintmg upon theater tickets an inscription denoting that the war tax has been paid and the date of payment, it will be understood, of course, that its field of usefulness is not restricted to this particular purpose and it may be used for making other imprints upon other articles.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A device for the purpose set forth comprising an open-ended holder, a casing slidably fitted within the holder through one end thereof and spaced from the back of the same to permit passage of a strip to be printed, the sides of the holder guiding the strip, and printing mechanism carried by the casing to act upon the strip drawn over the back of the holder.

2. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a holding member consisting of a U- shaped plate having open ends and provided at one end with inwardly projecting lips and at its front side with retaining flanges, a casing slidably fitted within the holder and impinging against the said lips, and printing mechanism carried by said casing.

3. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a holding member having open ends and provided at one end with inwardly projecting lips, a casing open at one end and at one side slidably fitted within the holder and engaging against said lips, printing mechanism carried by said casing, and a presser member within the holder arranged to cooperate with. the printing mechanism.

A. A device for the purpose set forth comprising an open-ended holder, a casing slidably fitted within said holder, printing mechanism carried by said casing, and a leaf spring secured at one end to the holder and having its free end projecting toward the printing mechanism.

5. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a holding member, a casing removvably fitted within the holding member and spaced from the holding member to permit passage of a strip to be printed, a printing roller mounted within the casing, an inking member mounted within the casing and in contact with the printing roller, and a presser on the holder arranged to hold the strip to be printed against the printing roller.

6. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a holding member, a casing removably fitted within the holding member and provided with an opening in its front face near one end, an inking roller mounted in the casing adjacent said opening, and a printing roller mounted in the casing and in contact with the inking roller.

7. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a holding member having open ends, a casing fitted within the holder and provided at one end with a cover having an inwardly turned guiding lip, printing mechanism mounted within the casing below said guiding lip, and a presser member on the holder below the lip and arranged rality of sockets and type removably fitted to maintain the strip to be printed in conin said sockets, and a presser member on tact with the printing mechanism. the holder arranged to maintain engage- 10 8.
