Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1918. Serial No. 262,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH A. WVELLMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Mason City, Cerro Gordo county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Ventilating Means, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide the top and bottom of the door so that fresh air may enter and foul air escape, means also being provided for suspending ventilation at times.
A further object of thisinvention is to provide improved means for ventilating a room when the door thereto is in closed position, by providing spaces between upper and lower margins of said-door and the adjacent frame members, means also being provided for automatically closing such spaces at times when the door is closed, to suspend the ventilating function, and for opening said 7 spaces when the door is opened.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for ventilating a room when the door is in closed position, by providing spacesbetween upper and lower margins of said door and the adjacent frame members, shutters being hinged to said frame members and adapted to closesaid spaces at times to suspend the ventilating function; means also being provided for automatically moving said shutters to closing position when the door is closed and to horizontal or open position when the door is opened.

hinge member 21 is formed with a tongue 21 extending within a fork of the hinge member 20* and the extremity of said tongueis rounded'and'spjaced from the end of the fork. A flexible hanger orstrap23 is fixed atoneend to the upper surface of the tongue 21 as by a tael; or screw 24, extends over the rounded end of said tongue and through the space between it and the fork of the other hinge member, througha hole 14 in the floor, and has a weight 25-fixed to its depending end portion. The weights 25, one at each end of the threshold shutter, tend to overbalance said member and hold it'in vertical or closingposition.
(An upper shutter 26 is hinged at one margin, in any suitable manner, to the header 16, and is adaptedto iill the' ventilating space at the upper margin of the door 2 10. The upper shutter 26 tends by gravity to remain in depending vertical or closing pos t1on,'1n the same vertical; plane as the closed" door.
A shutter moving arm is pivoted at one end by a screw or bolt 27 to the upper face or" the rigid threshold 17, adjacent the jamb 11 and also adjacent the line of articulation of the threshold shutter 18. The shutter moving arm comprises a horizontal port-ion 28 rcstingupon the threshold 17'; a vertical portion 29 integral-with and rising from the free end of said horizontal memilier and on the end of said short horizontalportion,-

Thus means is provided for operatively connect ing the door-to the threshold shutter.

When it is desired to suspend the closing functions of the shutters 18 and 26, and thus establish the ventilating function, the. door 10 is first moved to open position, thus causing the shutter moving arms to move and hold the shutters to the horizontal position. Then the lever 36 is oscillated to apply draft in opposite directions on the links 38, 39 and oscillate the latching bars 32, toward the vertical center of the door and releasing them from the lugs 31 of the shutter moving arms. Thereafter the door 10 may be moved in either direction without afi'ecting the shutter moving arms or shutters, the shutter moving arms holding the shutters in the horizontal positions and the ventilating spaces at top and bottom of the door remaining open when the door is closed. An opposite movement of the lever 36, when the door is openand in contact with the lugs 31, will reestablish the connection between the door and shutter-moving arms through the latching bars.
The threshold shutter 18 may in certain conditions be used independently of the upper shutter, or vice versa; and either shut- V ter may be connected to the door independently of the other if desired.
I claim as my invention 7 1. Ventilating means, comprising, in combination with a door mounted for oscillation in a frame, said door being spaced at its 7 upper and lower margins from said frame to provide ventilating spaces, shutters pivoted on transverse horizontal axes and adapted at times to close said ventilating spaces, and connections between said door and shutters for moving said shutters to horizontal position when the door is opened and to vertical closing position when the door'is closed. 7

Ventilating means, comprising the combination with a door mounted for oscillation in a frame, said door being spaced at its upper and lower margins from said frame to provide ventilating spaces, of shutters pivoted on transverse horizontal axes and adapted at times to, close said ventilating spaces, and detachable connections between said door and shutters for moving the latter to horizontal position when the door is opened and to vertical closing position when the door is closed. a '8.
